Do you use painter by any chance?

    http://conceptart.org/forums/attachm...1&d=1302710830

How did you get the metal look so well?

My observational skills may be great but i said nothing about my drawing skills

My57 - I am using photoshop for all my digital stuff now. I used one or two texture brushes from the m@ set but mostly I painted all those scratches by hand with a fine brush after laying down a good base 1st.
I have done a few roughed metal studies from life where I tried to get all the details etc. They were about 6 hours each, I found by forcing myself to carry on and paint all the little details I now know what to paint to get a metal look. Long studies from life will teach you how to paint various surfaces.

a quick sketch, just messing around

Awesome stuff, i like the flying trees and the work with the different faces.
The eyes of the persons are well done, they reflect the mood pretty well!

Looks like we've both been sporadic with the updates
Great colour studies, I like the blocking-in-thing approach, though how do you tell the value? What if a colour is a different value from what it actually appears?

Nelka - Thanks ..The flat colour studies were done to practice seeing colours as they are and their relation to each other. I used a flat hard brush so I wouldnt be able to mix colours on the canvas....had to eye ball them all. Also it was mainly to learn how to dial in colours using just the rgb sliders and not having to open up the colour picking window....to speed up workflow. And yes my 1st issue was....I have the right hue but I need a darker value of it...what now? Was tricky at 1st but I eventually figured out how to dial in darker values.
When I do these studies I just load the ref up in photoshop, enlarge the canvas and paint right next to the original image (takes great restraint to not colour pick!!) that way its easier to check colours. Also didnt pay much attention to doing good drawing was all about the colour

Hey m8, thanks for stopping by at my sb.
I love your stuff, i did not seen it all but i will.
You said that you`re teaching your self to use rgb sliders so i have a question if you don`t mind.
Well im using painters wheel extension for my cs4 and find it very natural to work with, so im wondering if it would be of any use for me to use psd sliders, it there any known advantage or its just a matter of preference. Logic tells me its just a preference but i would like to see your thoughts on subject matter.
And one other that`s been mentioned like million times concerning your art degree, did you find it of any use and would you take it again or study on your own.
    Thanks in advance.

Liberty - I have cs3 and i use the sliders just to speed up workflow. My art studies didnt help that much, really just taught me to use natural mediums.

That last piece is great, it's got a very strong mood. Stretch his face out a bit, just some quick free transform. You should do more finished studies and think about thing in terms of planes. Really imagine where the light will be falling, looking forward to more

Great work as always. I have two critiques that are hopefully helpful, first of all your digitals are way ahead of your lines so focus on your pencil work and try to get clean sweeping lines. What really helped me was looking at yotisi's mentoring thread, follow the exercises there. Also draw straight lines whenever you have the time, or general shapes just using clean lines. Finally check out the early bargue plates, see the use of line and try to imitate it. That should be very helpful.

Secondly I think you should read up on more colour and light theory. Your understanding is good but you would benefit from more knowledge, have another look over psg, itchstudio and loomis' creative illustration.

    Keep up the work buddy
