    DESCRIPTION

Amaterasu, Japanese Goddess of the Sun.

This round is mostly open to interpretation, but do your homework and pull your design from the original mythology. You're welcome to do a fictional restyling, just make sure you can justify your reasoning.

Here's some links to get you started:

Great start Joey-b, but what's she doing with her arms? At the moment there's no reason as to why they are floating out like that. I can't help wondering if something more definite of purpose might suit a Goddess. She could be reaching out to us, or as she's almost in a ballet pose how about pushing that a bit more? Dancing into the sun?

Joey-b: Slow down man, you have all week I think she needs some more Japanese elements, right now the billowing skirt/bottom with the overall pattern doesn't read as a kimono. And I agree with Poshspice. You've got enough time to give some purpose to that pose. Amaterasu's wikipedia entry has some great info, there are a few historically relevant props you could have her holding that it mentions.
Wiggers: Great start. I love that elegant, straight hair. I can definitely see all the layers of a traditional Japanese costume

Since I have some excellent on-hand references at home (my SO's mom being Japanese and a teacher of Japanese, too) - I can't pass this up.

But damn school is taking up ALL my time so far....grrrr....I.Must.Find.Time..../William Shatner

Thinking that I want her skin to glow like the sunlight was trapped underneath.
This is my tester (and I know that I'll need to do at least 3/4 of her).

If anyone has any thoughts or advice on painting of light under and through skin it would be greatly appreciated.

cowboy surfer: This is just how I reason it, I could be wrong, so I hope that someone corrects me if I am, but.

Assuming that the light is coming from *within* her, she really wouldn't have shadow. Instead, the darker/redder parts would come from where there was more skin between her and the light. So the places with the least amount (like eye lids, the inner ear) would be the brightest.

It probably wouldn't look very good, though... >>; so maybe an artistic interpretation is probably best, rather than trying to do how it literally might look.

Cowboy Surfer: That's a great concept you have going there, but as Daestwen said, it might not look like you want it to if executed realistically. This artist did a pretty cool inner-glow effect, I can't link to the image exactly but it's in her "elf art" section, second row, second in from the right.

Cowboysurfer On post 590 here in Camara's SB there is a good explanation of subsurface scattering that might be helpful for you. I am sure there is a lot more out there too, but I read this the other day and it came to mind.

    Hope this helps.
