    Hey Michiel!
Your 3rd image, the face, looks pretty cool. You should put that much "face-work" in the body drawings too and they'll look a lot cooler! Also I would use a little less opacity when you brush. Now your lines in the first 2 drawings are very (I think) hard, totally black. Try to do the less important lines a little less "hard". Also try to do a picture without lines at all. Just with shadows or highlights. You gain skill by that. Keep it up!

    Ohyeah, please crit mine too..

    Hi, Michiel.

You are wise to start studying anatomy, but you may want to also do a heavy load of observational drawing. With a boatload of observational drawing you will be able to train your eyes to see more detail and accurately place forms in your drawings. With enough practice, you will gain a handful of different and useful techniques.

With the anatomy drawings.... I would try to form each muscle in 3d space.... on 2d paper. What I mean is- try to interpret how muscles move and take up space in reality. It can get quite complex, but try to really nail down where a muscle ends and where it begins.

heh, I suppose what I am saying is draw, draw, draw and draw some more.... and don't limit yourself to just anatomy reference. There are tons of objects in real life to reference as well as 'The Masters'.

    Hope I helped,

    -Henry

Let me know if anything was unclear.

You're off to a good start. Just keep working on anatomy.

If you are having problems drawing hands, I would suggest you spend the next few of drawing sessions spending a hour or so on hand studies. You're going to want to draw the first few very slowly and methodically, so that you can properly analyze the proportions. You do not want to do them too fast.

Also, work on trying to draw your shapes and lines without picking up too much on the pencil. By that, I mean, try not to scratch in your lines with the pencil, but make then flow.

About shading. You have a tendency to do these overlapping squiggles, and thats exactly what it looks like. Instead of defining your volumes or shapes, the squiggles sort of stick out and do not really provide a methodical or practical method for shading. This is because A: the squiggles are far too spontaneous, and B: whenever the squiggles overlap to create darker tones, it looks very chaotic.

Your latest study shows great improvement, though, and it was wise of the other CA member to advise you to do a tonal form study. While I still see some squiggling, the primary medium for the shading is crosshatching, which is much better for defining your volumes.

Really analyze how some of the most talented members of CA render their images. Take into account their techniques for shading and ect. Also, it seems like you are trying to do pencil type illustrations on photoshop, which is fine, but photoshop is not necessarily the best learning tool at your disposal. Your best option will still be a plain ol' sketchbook and a set of decent pencils. I say this because I'm seeing areas where you need a thicker line weight, but your simply using too small of a brush on photoshop. Pencils, for right now, will grant you far more expressive freedom. This is because pencils can be tilted in all manner of directions, and be held in different ways to get different effects while drawing.

Aside from that, you're moving in the right direction with your studies. Draw from life, but make sure your analyzing the world around you, thinking critically about form and shape and the whole pantheon of artistic principles and concepts. If you do that, art will become much more of a journey than a challenge.

Just keep it up with the studies, and you'll do alright.

No one mentioned Loomis yet, so download these, read them all, and do what they say.

    Good luck!

Hey Michiel! Pretty good work on the muscles. Well I'm noob too so maybe the advise I'm giving is not the best to become very good very fast. The best way to learn drawing is to draw. I find that "no-lines" method a good method to practice shading and lighting.

    Keep it up!

Its bin a while but here is a update again from some of my latest sketches. Im actually starting to work a lot more on anatomy lately and I have more fun doing so. I won’t update every day but try to do every week or so. Im a bit older now and realized I only get better by drawing more, and drawing on paper. Some of these are older then others. Mix between “from my mind”, “from life” and re drawings from people on this forum (if you see one of your designs and want me to remove them please say so) I learned a lot from re drawing things and finally start to understand a bit of structure in the body but im far from finished.
