    My first CoW.
WIP. It grabs the comet with it's claw-mouth. Uses it to get to new hunting grounds.

They are pretty small, roughly the size of a fly. Their feeding habits are somewhat like a leach or a filterfish. Absorbing nutrients from gasses and dust.

so uh, I tried to make a starfield + planet for my bg using the tutorials http://gallery.artofgregmartin.com/t...tar_field.html
but I only have ps elements and I can't do a lot of the stuff, does anyone know about any tutorials that would work for me?

Crazy topic. A creature that basically can exist in a total vacuum, at absolute zero temperatures, and doesn't need air to breathe. Neat.

I would say, for now, just worry about the creature, and make sure you use layers, and save a file that saves the layers. Then you can always do the background later.

And if not, look at what actual satellite images look like, and mimic them the best you can with the tools you have using different size, opacity and hardness of brushes. http://hubblesite.org/gallery/album/

humbold: I made a quick Starfield and Comet for my submission and I just went back and did a quick recording of how I did it if its any use. It took about 10 minutes in Photoshop. I painted mine at about 3000pixels wide but the recording was done about about 800 wide so there are some differences but you'll get the idea.

Got a pretty cool idea now ... don't know if I can finish it till Monday but at least the explanation is well-grounded and could be nearly existent that way ... (maybe I sell it to the highest bidder ) More to come ...

    EDIT: There it is ...

    C.O.W. - #108: Comet Rider

The Comet Rider uses comets to send out his brood to populate other planets.
He is very sensitive for changings in the planets gravitational field so he recognizes whenever a comet passes by in an acceptable distance for him to travel. As soon as the Rider leaves the atmosphere of his hostplanet he uses his wings as solar sails which enable him to travel by the power of photon streams sent out by the sun. His oxygen requirements are covered for a few days by the activity of certain bacteria inside his body the Rider lives in symbiosis with. They produce oxygen through photosynthesis. This makes it possible for him at least to reach the comet on which he dies shortly after his arrival.
The eggs the Comet Rider transports within his abdomen grow up and finally release the larvas which nourish from the body of the dead parent.
The surviving descendents leave the comet when passing by a new planet.

Excellent topic. I have my line drawing but for whatever reason my old scanner doesn't want to function with Vista. So far, I like this OS. It's very user friendly but it doesn't work with this ancient scanner of mine. Should get it scanned in soon though. I don't plan on running out of time like I did for the last one. The art hiatus is over.

As far as the topic goes, this has been a long time in coming. [Insert thunder sound fx] BRAIN STORM!! Ok, when I do a design for a creature of the week I try to go at it from a plausibility standpoint. Believable concepts are rooted at some point in reality. We are constantly influenced by the world around us and so designing a creature should reflect that. With that said, let's look at what the creature need in terms of physical characteristics.

The first thing to take into consideration is the environment of the creature. It has latched onto a hurtling, radioactive piece of rock running rampant through the great void of space. Space is cold...very cold. It's a vacuum...so no sound and no air (at least the kind we humans can breathe). Comets give off constant bursts of different radiation. An example would be x-rays, which are generally harmful to a good deal of carbon-based lifeforms...hence the lead vest at the doctor's office. The creature's means of conveyance moves much more quickly than any planet. Here on Earth we don't even feel the rotation of the planet because it's so gradual. But a comet is much smaller and moving much more quickly, so that should be taken into account.

So, with the above information, try to come up with physical solutions to each of these problems. How does the creature hold onto something moving so quickly? Does it have strong appendages that it drills into the surface or does it live partially submerged within the comet? How does the creature survive the intense radiation? Does it have a robust/ reflective hide that wards off rads or does it give off it's own energy field for protection? What about the frigid temperature of space? Does the creature have thick fur or give off its own heat source to keep the cold at bay? These are some of the things you might want to consider for this particular C.O.W.

However, the most important question of all is why. Why does this thing ride comets? It could influence the entire look of the creature. If it attaches itself to comets for some specific reason then that should be evident in the final image. Maybe it feeds on solar radiation or simply hitches rides on comets to reach its mating spot. Whatever the reason may be, it always helps to tell a story when designing an image

That's all for now, good luck all.

@ Nexus: Actually there are thoughts of yours I didn't mind so far ... Even though I pretty much thought out the creatures point of why to ride a comet and how it manages it to reach it ... but like you mentioned radiation and coldness will be factors I have to think over again ... (did you read my explanation?)

The brainstorm thing is basically for anyone looking through this thread and trying to figure out where to start, just to get the creative juices flowing. Indeed sir, I read your explanation and it is excellent. I'm not a biologist by an means but you covered a good number if not all of the aspects of the creature's life. You came up with a story and you drew inspiration from it. Good on ya. That is how really interesting designs begin...with a good concept. Looking forward to see what you do with your ideas.

    ok ok..defined!

Seems to be some talk about thy comet and what separates it from its other rocky counter parts.

    comet
    –noun Astronomy.
a celestial body moving about the sun, usually in a highly eccentric orbit, consisting of a central mass surrounded by an envelope of dust and gas that may form a tail that streams away from the sun.

    asteroid
    -noun Astronomy
Any number of numerous small celestial bodies that revolve around the sun, with orbits lying chiefly between Mars and Jupiter and characteristic diameters between a few and several hundred kilometers. Also called minor planet, planetoid.

And they lived happily ever after..until Snow White got hit by a car.

gnahz - Thats cool, however the comet tail doesnt follow the line it has travelled along. The tail is actaully illuminated by the sun and knowing that is looks like your creature is holding on to the side of the comet and is being dragged sideways.
