Impressive rendering on that last one! The bones underneath that wrinkly skin can be felt. I think the hand sketches could use a more blocky, constructional approach like the one taught in lesson 6 of Famous Artists Course. Some of your fingers come out thick or tapering too much or having the joints slightly misplaced and for me at least, thinking about hands as "low-poly objects" helps with proportions among other things.
smuli: Thank you for the feedback. I'll have to go back to basics with hands, I'm still sort of half improvising the construction and it shows!
Did some 2 minute head gestures today. Also worked on my portfolio to include some more programming and 3D related things. Too bad I've lost my Fallout New Vegas mod project or I would have included screenshots of that.
A few problematic sketches today. A weird bad-anatomy power-armor gladiator girl and a bunch of experimentation with light and form and faces. I feel like I've fallen behind by only drawing an hour or two a day over the last week. Mostly didn't even result in anything worth saving. I've been getting a lot of feedback that I should really do more finished and detailed work. I feel like that's what I should start working towards.
Computer problems preventing me from working as much as I'd want to.
Experimenting with a layered painting style where I separate materials and their properties on different layers somewhat similar to 3D software. On the frog I have a flat light blue, some speckles for texture, dark blue ~40% multiply for directional light, another multiply layer for ambient occlusion, a standard layer for the red pattern, a layer for specular highlights and finally a hue-mode layer with some green from the environment. Everything sits inside a layer group masked with the frog's silhouette. Using the lasso tool for all of my hard edges now as opposed to trying to paint edges very carefully with a small brush, much quicker.
As a neat side effect I can recolor the frog and have it still look natural.

As it turns out, it's a lot easier to get stuff done without distractions like music or youtube videos or a podcast. The difference between work done with distractions vs in silence is noticeable. Why didn't anyone tell me before o.O ... I guess it'd be easy to tell which one I'm talking about. Also I want to do more environments.

That last environment looks outstanding! Great compo, values and details. The ellipses on the airship are a bit distorted and the perspective on the leftmost building thing looks weird but after minor fixes, it'll be a great portfolio piece! I also like the frogs, nice photographic values and edge treatment and thanks for cheers for writing down the process!
A little bit of a downswing in productivity again, feeling sick, figuring out allergies. Got picked for a 7 month games artist trainee programme, should be amazing. The horse and the bugs are from today.
School gives me an opportunity to practice ~6 hours a day non-stop, I like it. Here's some highlights from the last 2 weeks. Trying to go for design first, execution second without being sloppy and leaving things unfinished. Probably not quite there yet, most stuff I do could use some more brush discipline and an hour of cleanup. Not enough environments yet but I'm happy with the one with the tower in the fog. Last 4 are done in one day for a school project.
Some studies from photo reference mostly through reddit and google. I believe there should be no issues with copyright when used for educational purposes only citing sources where available, correct me if I'm wrong.
edit: Also, I realized this thread was started January 27th 2008, over 5 years ago. Time flies.

Practicing figures. Quantity over quality, trying to make dynamic thumbnail figures breaking out of the habit of overworking every single drawing and settling for the first one which results in it coming out stiff and awkward. Trying to do mostly from imagination but I refer to some inspiration to get me rolling every once in a while.
Drawing all those figures made me realize I seriously need to do some revisions on my anatomy studies. This time I'm trying to apply all the knowledge after studying from books and whatnot, theoretically the information should stick better.
Experimenting with technique to improve iteration speed. Starting with silhouette thumbnails and breaking them up into sub-silhouettes to design skin/clothes/hair. Seems to accelerate the design process and give a much clearer read. Keeping it clean without losing speed still needs work.

Some Final Fantasy XIV streaming. A pointlessly overworked character that took 6 hours to make, and a cute furry creature with a weird photo ground texture as an experiment. Last one is more silhouette experiments from yesterday.
Trying to learn to use pencil and paper to draw, first time I've drawn regularly on paper since 2009. I currently don't have a way of showing any pencil stuff, but here's a 2 hour doodle I did to test whether I've learned something. Considering it's the only thing I've done digitally in months I'm satisfied.
