An Old Piece that Needs serious re-vamping (Critique please?)

This was a bit of concept art I did last year with a lot of free time.
But looking back on it I notice many MANY flaws with the way it was made. I am looking to completely revamp it's appearance. So if you would be so kind as to tear into this one as though it were a juicy piece of steak, that would be fantastic!

Also... this beast is called an Armorhound if that helps at all with the direction of the suggestions!
(I'll also take suggestions for names that sound less boring!)

-Much respect and thanks in advance!

well, i think its a good bace, the only problem i can see in this one really is the rendering, and if you, yourself KNOW a lot of problems in this piece, this i say start fixing those and THEN post the new piece.

one thing i noticed though, why doesnt the feet match?

The rendering looks flat. Maybe you can think of using a different directional light source? Its got that "flash photograph" type of shading that isn't very natural considering the background. Now if you put it in a very dark environment maybe it make sense, but not at the moment.

You raise some very good points there! I'll be back with a better rendering for y'all to rip into!
