NOT ALL ENTRIES WILL MAKE IT TO POLL
A MAXIMUM OF 45 ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED IN THREE CATEGORIES:
ACCEPTANCE TO POLL WILL BE BASED ON THREE CRITERIA:
1: DID THE ARTIST FOLLOW THE BRIEF? (allowance for creative takes will be made).
2: IS THE PIECE ARTISTICALLY SOUND? (Is the illustration "finished?" - did the artist pay attention to anatomy, perspective, other fundamentals?).
3: IS THIS ILLUSTRATION THE BEST ONE? (reserved for rounds with a large amount of entries).
Depending on round turn out, the number of accepted entries in a given Category may vary from round to round. For example, if only 5 Advanced entries are made, that leaves EXTRA 10 slots open for Intermediate and Beginner.
Only Advanced Entries will be accepted for the the thumbs on the Queens Roster. If no Advanced entries are available for a round, then it will fall to the Intermediates. If no Intermediate are available, then it shall fall to the Beginners.
SUBMITTING YOUR ENTRY:
1: You must submit ONE full sized image.
2: Make sure your name and CHOW # are EASILY READABLE on your entry.
3: Use the Standard format (Below);

Posting just for the sake of participating... I'm frustrated enough with my complete inability to make anything professional.

This is my first ChOW entry ever... an inspiring topic, as I've always been interested in pandemics and how people respond to them.
The medium is watercolor and pencil.
Thanks for looking,
edit: hmm... usually when I use the attachment manager, it shows the image not just a link... anyone know what's up with that? (added my own img link)
edit2: removed double post

First attempt at CHOW, or digital painting really. Almost killed me.

Another "blank-of-the-week" newbie. Alas, only had one evening to work on this one.

Third piece I've ever done in a "painterly" style (the last being a few years ago) and first weekly. Much fun. Two sides of Gabriella:

KINGKIDD I'm giving you the benefit of doubt with your entry as it looks an *awful lot* like a photo paint-over to me. If it turns out that it is in fact, I must remove it from the poll.
The rest: some very good entries, however many of you got off track with your ideas. Pay attention to the brief.

Man I wish I could have entered this one.. there's some really cool ideas here.
My favs would have to be CCThrom for the composition and Marctaro for the concept

Oregano: while mines not a *paint over* i did definitely use photo reference for the girls face...sorry if this is against the rules and you have to pull it out ...i wont use photo reference for the next one, promise
FunkdaFide: its a little dark for me. i know its supposed to be gloomy, but i should still be able to see the effort you put into it! still, excelent job.
Ryoken: don't knock your work! the lighting is great, and the attention given to the eye hole in mask is something i think most entries overlooked...overall nice job.
Beegull: great first digital entry! im sure itll get easier as you do more. that said, i think the anatomy is off a bit (like in the shoulder being a bit far back) but its a spot on concept i think.
Aeronik: love it. she looks like she's stepping off for a breather and to just pray for help. amazing. is the hat a bit colonial though?
DECYPL: its awesome that you did it during the daytime! looks almost like morning. very optimistic and hopeful, even if all the buildings burned down..
FrumpyDog: hahaa. great style!
longshao: excellent work. my only thought is that she could be anybody...the mask in the foreground tells me, but she doesn't.
Nyx702: wow. sooo, how historically accurate is this? i really like the approach though.
Burmak: thats pretty cool! and with personified plague too! my only thought is i dont know its her...thats a small point by the way
Jake Kobrin: nice job. the atmosphere is great! and the chrome is spot on. the head seems a little off though. like the neck is twisted weird?
mayk: holy...wow. my favourite. i think someone commented that she looks blind, which i didn't notice until it was pointed out. but the detail is just amazing.
CCThrom: shes got great personality! and its well done! a top contender in my book.
Kailaan: over all great job. i like the burning hand in the corner! nice touch.
TroyWilkerson: i like the perspective a lot. its like i have the plague and im looking up at her for help. she does seem to be floating though..
marc_taro: thats a lot of detail!! wow! i really like that mask too! at first i thought her arm was amputated though...then i found the other half
Mirana: i really like that you show us both sides to her. and i think the painterly style really works! keep up the good work. to me it look like she sits like a man though, when she's dressed up...
amazing work everyone!

I'm just happy to have finally made something for one o' these activities. I've been working almost exclusively with "Wind in the Willows" content for months now, so this grim subject made for a refreshing change...
I voted for Mayk as my fave in terms of both good painting AND the right historical "feel", and Aeronik for emotional impact.
January 22nd, 2008 #26
However, placing a photo underneath your image and painting over it with a blender tool and claiming it's a "painting" is discouraged and grounds for removal from poll, and if I'm in a snit, banning from CHOW.
Please make sure that all you are doing is photo reference.

I voted for CCthrom, because I love the watercolor and the original take on the plague doctor concept. Good job!
January 23rd, 2008 #28
yep, it's CCthrom for me too, even if just for having the guts to present a well rendered and balanced shot done with something other than a wacom!!!!
other than that, it does have the personality of a true chow winner!

kingkidd I commend you on having the character so young. Adds a poignant level to subject. But, the face seems a little off.
mirana Interesting approach to address showing the character's face while keeping her in costume.
mayk I love her dress and the lighting.
marc_taro Really cool costume design. Not period, but still cool. Lots of detail in it.
Jake Kobrin A really cool visual style to it. Convey's a very dark atmosphere. Very sombre and macbre.
CCThrom Well done image. The red of the flowers stands out well and connects back to quote. Glad you included the tools; the mask has that nice detail.
aeronik You did a great job with her pained and tired expression.
DECYPL Catching a breather between patients/corpses.

ryoken really got the character's sense of the futility of trying to doctor plague victims.
decypl showed nice chracter and setting, although it looks kind of sci-fi.
mayk gorgeous painting.
CCThrom nice conceptual details.
marktaro - this is definitely the most interesting concept (history be damned), and well-executed. If I had only voted once, it would've gone to you.
