That first one is beautiful! I definitely like it the best. Hell, I love it like that.

Poshspice - As others have said, I'm really enjoying the series you're coming up with. I get a sense of irritation, however, when I look at most of her facial expressions.
Vorace - Looking bad-ass, certainly a unique emotional take on the subject.

Here's my update: Not sure if i'll be able to finish this one in time... I'll finish it regardless, but I don't think it'll get done by tomorrow. That said, it needs a lot or work. The "Plague Cloud" won't be that dark in the final...it's going to be just a hair darker than the background and it'll be on a very low opacity... so that when you look at it, it look like vapor (not dark smoke)Name: snair_plaguedoc_web2a.jpg

mayk - Great job. I love the feel to it as if she is feeling her way through a dark place with only little light. Fantastic visual. I would love to see a process thread from you sometime.

mayk - dunno what's with the attachments... also, two immediate impressions when looking at your piece. One was she's blind, and the other was she's about to set her front on fire. I really love the colors so far, especially the warm theme with cold shadows.

I hope to be able to finish this one as well as the inquisitor. I'd really like to render it much better. I'm mainly unsure about the cane she's holding. I don' think I like the position of it with her holding onto the mask with that hand. Thoughts?Name: plague_doctor_5.jpg

Maybe if you placed the cane under her left arm and against her body instead of her hand? Or placed it in her belt? The cane probably wasn't used for walking after all but for lifting up the bedsheet or clothing of the patients...so probably no need for it to be in her hand while she's taking the mask off...or just get rid of it altogether?

From Wiki: The cane was used to both direct family members to move the patient, other individuals nearby, and possibly to examine the patient with directly. Its precise purpose with relation to the plague victim isn't known.

This is a different layout that I sketched up for my Plague Doctor. Still figuring out what I want to do...kept thinking of Gabriella at her late father's desk writing in her journal.

The pizzicamorti was the gravedigger, who was also protected by a tarred cloak and who usually wore gloves. He had the unpleasant task of transporting the plague-ridden bodies and burning them.

He wore gloves and bells at his ankles - so people would know when he was approaching - and had a mask that covered his face and hair, with its characteristic hooked nose containing aromatic antidotes

taken from eye witness to history

I also found someting to share:

The plague brought about many deaths in England in Tudor times. Bubonic plague is caused by bacteria called Yersinia pestis. These bacteria lived on the fleas that infest rats and mice. Rats came ashore in England from ships from Europe. As rubbish was dumped close to people's homes, rats and humans lived near to each other. When rats died, their fleas left in search of food. They bit people and passed on the bacteria, which gave humans the plague. Even fleas' droppings could infect people. When a person caught Bubonic plague they would start to feel horribly cold and get a high fever a couple of days after a flea bite. Swellings called buboes would appear and an ulcer that changed from orange to black appeared where they had been bitten. The victim was confused, delirious and restless and died after three to five days, though some people took as long as a month. Only about a quarter of people who caught plague got better. People could also catch primary pneumonic plague. This disease was spread by coughing and could kill its victims in two days. The royal court and rich people could leave the dangerous cities, but poor people had to stay where they were. Herbs and spices were used to try to prevent or cure the disease. Ginger was put in scented balls called pomanders that people carried with them to smell. Chervil, a herb rather like parsley with an aniseed smell, was thought to help prevent the plague. Plague doctors, who wore all-over leather protective clothes, put bergamot oil in the long beaks of their face masks. Bergamot comes from a plant that is related to oranges. It was thought to cure boils and abscesses. The doctors sprinkled themselves with vinegar and chewed the sweet herb angelica to fight off infection before seeing their patients. Some people thought that famine, war and plague were punishments from God, but by the end of Elizabeth I's reign others began to think of ways to prevent the disease and make cities more hygienic.

there is no evidence that the plague came from the rats. plagues have naturally and commonly occured in the human history. it is usually a common virus that mutates and becomes more agressive like the simple cold today mutates every time before its past on to the next person and becomes more and more resistent to antibiotika. the black death stopped when all not yet immune to the plague died. some say it was a kind of ebola virus with a much longer incubation period. mostly because the black death came to places where there were no rats like island and one of the earliest cases happened on crimea during the war with mongols so that in it self suggest a landroute for the plague

Today's biggest threat to our society is poor education
And I see it as my duty to search and destroy the ignorance polluting the air around me
As they say Rome wasn't built in one day and even Jesus had to start somewhere too
And even if Jesus was prosecuted I will not give up my struggle!
