I kinda just ended up sketching a bear with some saber shaped eyes and part of it's fur bleached off...

I really enjoyed drawing it though.

Thought I'd participate again. Still rusty, but getting hinty reminders of what I need to do.
This strayed rather far from what I really meant to create, but ah well. Thas how it goes sometimes.

Solid work all around guys! Good to see.

    a repley

    hi there

    William b. Hand
i think the description fits very good to your design. good overall work id say

    Blueman
really kewl linework. but reminds me more of a yeti or so because of all the fur and the pose.

    dan liimatta
very kewl abstract design. fits perfectly to the abstract description

    Ryoken
i especially like the background. the lighting kills most of the details from your bear but the environment has super atmosphere.

    Arteater
    frightening
good work but doesnt look so bearlike to me.

    Mitze
4 sabereyes woaa:-). could be a kewl design for the 4eyed sentinelhound of the norse mythology. forgot his name.
    kewl thing

    Apocalypse_Rex
for half an hour thats a really kewl thing, mine isnt half a good worked out and took more than a hour

    Vanvalen
    kewl bear

    Bear Beast .. Hmm

    DSG 1323: Creature: SABRE-EYED, STRETCH-SKULLED, BLEACH-SKINNED, BEAR-BEAST

Hoping the blogger images work a little better. I've noticed that they will sometimes show, sometimes not. Not sure what's going on. You can always look at the full size at http://beaglefury.blogspot.com/

Started with a sketch, but thought it might be fun to try a pencil shading. Didn't quite work out as well as I wanted, so added a bit of digital watercolor on top of it. All done within Corel Painter Essentials 3.

Piecemaker: I like this. I like the background hammerheads; gives a nice touch to it.

Apocalypse Rex: Reminds me of a hairless rat mole. A hairless rat bear, maybe?

William b. Hand: Nice details and concept.. though, I think I like your first one better.

Welp, I went back into it even further and came up with version 3, a Wooly Sabre Bear Beast. I'll leave some comments tomorrow before posting a new topic.

I gotta be honest William, those snowflakes killed it for me! Love the critter and his textures, but those perfect snowflake in the foreground make it feel like a greeting card.

Piecemaker - I like your watery take on this. Your solution of putting the eyes on the ends of saber-like stretched-skull stalks was an elegant one. Nice effect for water there. Aquatic animals in the bg give a nice sense of depth, and the perspective gives a nice sense of proportion. Might've been nice to include a little fishy or two swimming around him... maybe cleaning out bits of filth from his teeth or something? The shape of the body is kinda wonky and basic, but I dig the shapes in the head and neck. (oh, and thanks! )

Vanvalen - Nice bear! Seems like it's tailor-made for printing on an egg or sculpting in a porcelain locket. Good description of form and texture on the face and left side arm. Only area that bothers me a bit is the leg and side of the torso that's by it. kinda switches to a flat sketch there, with highlights describing the lines their next to, but not the form itself.

Apocalypse_Rex - Nice quickie! Rim-lighting worked nicely. Feels solid and mass-y... Love the blackish gums and the pokey nose. Good weirdness for the sabre eyes, too.

Mitze - AWESOME! Nice improvement on this version! You flipped this horizontally, right? The victim looks much much better now! Great creature design! Love his eyes... Sometimes the multi-eyed thing can look pretty derivative, but you pulled it off masterfully. They look natural and wildly strange. You've described the form very nicely on this guy. Loving the wet nose and the play of the grey tongue - really well done bit of subtlety there. Crit about the the mouth is that the upper, right-side teeth are on too much of a slant for the head... and the lower gums are visually confusing... maybe those highlights are a bit too bright and blobby. The guy is just terrific. Easy to imagine something like "WEIRD TALES" printed right above this. Great pic.

Ryoken - Love the sense of depth in this... Nice lighting effect. The bear beast looks rather diminutive here... maybe because we have little to compare it to other than the cave height, which we automatically make normal ceiling height unless otherwise informed... So, it looks like it's the size of a raccoon or dog to me. Great exhalation vapour! I meant to put that into my pic and forgot.

Arteater - More dog-like than bear, maybe, but a fun creature! Bit washed out on the white of the bg... Maybe might consider doing this sort of thing on a grey, or tinted, bg... then you get to show highlights that are brighter than its surroundings, too! Glad you like the newer placement of the eye on mine!

dan liimatta - MARVELOUS! Right off the bat, the fatty girth and slimy disposition of it are felt. Bird is nice detail for scale and humour... Only crit is that it took me a while to realize exactly what the orientation of the face was. It's all so uniformly gooey and I didn't know how to read the various features (the ear looks like the nose, and the eye looked like a slit). Maybe a slight shift in hue could help differentiate the nose and ear, and the eye might be more apparent with a subtler, softer, highlight - or maybe an iris. Great job!

Blueman - Nice drawing. The foreshortening of the arm might be helped by some hint of form for the forearm where it meets the bi-cep. He's not really saber-eyed, as much as sabre-toothed, but oh well. Glad you like my pic, and always happy to be an inspiration!

BeagleFury - Hmm... Sorta looks like an anteater. An odd little sketch. Thanks for the comment - Really? You prefer the first one? I suppose it's friendlier...

Wspeed6 - I like this design! It's supposed to be a bear-beast, so I don't think it's too bear-like at all. I think you did a good job showing the mouth's shape, I like the detail in the eye, and - as simple as they are - the surroundings do their job.

FrankWhite - Well, it sortuv looks more like a Blind, Be-Tusked, Cat-King... Kinduv on the simple side in terms of perspective and construction... I like what you did regarding the shadowing and line-work in those tusks.

ashton - This guys pretty cool! Nice ridge on its back, and I like that you gave it stalk eyes, as that's more what I originally imagined for the concept! Kinduv a clash of styles within the same piece... I tend to think that this would work better if you cropped the top and bottom so it's closer in shape to a square.

Reaxion - Huh. What, uh... What is this, just a random photo-manipulation? Kinduv not really addressing the topic on any level, unless you count that it was probably a bear photo.

Ryoken (Again) - Oh no's! The snowflakes made it feel like a greeting card to you? Really? Oh well. I rather like those flakes and the sense of animation they bring to the pic (plus I am a fan of juxtaposing the cute/delicate/pretty/non-threatening with the fearsome/creepy/rough/ugly/threatening), but different things hit us differently. I actually never meant to create such a hairy guy out of him, so if I make yet another version with some hair then it'll be sans flakes and maybe that'll be yer favourite.

    Okay...

Now, I gotta come up with the next topic. I don't know about everyone else, but I wasn't able to access CA.org all damn day.

I only had a pen and doodled this at work but seeing as its my first time drawing a bear I'm happy with it... about 35 minutes worth of thinking it out and drawing after an hour of bear studies
