Eric Elwell's sketchbook monstrositism (warning: some NSFW studies)
See last page for more recent.
Hi... This is my first post (I think). I signed up awhile back, and never got around to getting my stuff out there. There's so much great stuff on CA.org that I am almost afraid to jump in, but I think it will serve to push me to paint harder/faster/better etc. etc. etc.
Most of these in the first post are mirrored from my site. I'll put up new stuff as I do it. (nag me to do this! )
Crits / Comments are very much welcomed!

I can't see why you were intimidated, amazing stuff! Please keep posting!
I consider it a challenge before the whole human race, and I ain't gonna lose.

thanks for the comments, glad you like them so far...
I struggle a bit with values, trying to do some paintings in grayscale for practice. I prefer to start with color for speed (and I just like color heh), but I think I need to learn some things about values.. anyway here it is (ended up doing a color pass/crop as well)

not much, just a quickie...
rough for a personal project
January 16th, 2008 #6
Cool shit, man! Glad you decided to start posting! Lots of atmosphere in the first one! I was diggin' on the rhino-sheet as well!
Keep 'em coming!
January 18th, 2008 #7
thanks! the rhino is one of my favorites, and was a really fun project, got to do lots of studies.. which I don't get to do as often as I'd like. One more.. from a concept tag at polycount. Highlights are way too strong, but another piece, another day.
Hopefully I can get some time, kick it into high gear and post more than one at a time.. we'll see how time permits.

Cool stuff! I like your style, keep more works!

duuuuude, i havnt been signing on to aim, how have you been. ive seen most of these and givin my 2 cents.
anyway, i saw your post on someone elses thread and thought i would say howdy, and i like that blue guy up there, looks like something it would do, haha.
take care man, and why does your tag say oregon?
February 8th, 2008 #10
Hey man! ... yeah the Oregon thing, didn't notice that. Been a registered lurker for too long!
nothing huge.. just a little sketchy sketch for a mini comp at GameArtisans in anticipation of DomWar3. The color pass was done with a mouse, so it will need some more love'n before it's all said and done. Most of my time has been consumed with a brochure. Going to finish that off tonight, then I can get back to painty stuff!
February 8th, 2008 #11
ah.. may as well post some of these quick city paintings I had done for a project a few months back.
February 8th, 2008 #12
When I saw your sketches, I thought 'oh gosh. wow.' why should you be intimidated? Hehe, I reallyy like your buildings! However, you may want to work on some of the figures (for instance, the man in the armour -- his arm is rather messy) because I feel like they don't possess as much 'ooomph' as the rest.
I LOVE your stuff! I'll be looking out for more.

good stuff must say, that eiffel were really good and liked black/white monsters as well.
In the first post where there are mechanical insects, you might want to shadow the backround legs more blacker, or give them a little more of suggestion for shape.

Nice variety of work. I loved the first little rhino rendering you showed, beautiful.

gah... some prelim stuff for dom war3. Was just mousing around on the B&W angel, so I'm not really sure I even wanted to show it. Not too thrilled with the horse head either, should have used ref. Last 3 images are not for the current comp. They were for a warm up mini-comp, redid my dom war character from last year.
For the Dominance War3 entry I will definitely be looking for advice in the critiques forum once I nail down a direction..

another concept for tonight... Not there yet. Not really close even. (Theme for DomWar3 in a nutshell is Magical Character sent to destroy robot army, character is supposed to carry an artifact, have a magic power or a magic weapon. No machinery aloud.) As you can see I am still a far ways off.
Crits and suggestions are very much welcomed!

this is all awesome stuff! i really like the forms youve got going on and the imaginative stuff is really...imaginative! love it
the only crit i would give is that some of the colour choices for your shadows and reflected light radiosity stuff seems a little abitrary - sometimes they're spot on, and sometimes they're not. might be worth hitting a few more paintings from life and really checking out the subtle hue changes from the light source, the bounced light from multiple objects and the colour in the shadows... hope this makes sense - words dont appear to be my strong point this morning
look forward to seeing more stuff - i will be checking back

Strybjorn, thanks for pointing that out.. I really only have a conceptual understanding of light as I don't generally paint from reference or life, and I know I REALLY should. I guess I just need a kick in the pants to do it. (not literally) I'd like to do more stuff from life, and fewer monsters. I need to broaden my horizons I think.
blah blah, more sketches.. (something feels wrong about the bottom right guy, and I am not sold on the glowing eyes)

another fun one.. going to do some middle eastern / gothic revival style studies next I think...

*search her eyes, because they were plopping out*
Cool work O.o Your colors and your mood ... awsome... I also like the steps...the sketch and the more finished piece togehter...
And the "Sd" Form of this one creature (dom war) ... rofl so cutie
February 26th, 2008 #25
I agree with strybjorn. Colors look muddy. I think localizing your colors and getting some bounce of those colors will help push your work further. Understand the reflection amount each surface will give you. I still have to work on that myself. Your design sense is pretty good, just need to work on anatomy a bit more. There is always room for polish. Good stuff overall.

Hey thanks everyone!
Beelow, I will have to take some more time to do studies.
Though I haven't taken the opportunity yet to sit down and
play with color localization just for the sake of practicing it,
I definitely will. Thanks for the tip!
Andy, yeah that's me, I had interned at the Garage a couple of
years ago. Haven't posted in awhile though.
Here is the larger version of the DomWar character, and some fun
speed paints.. I was kind of on auto pilot on the monster ..
the design is lacking.
