lil website logo preview coupled with some progress on piece 10 of the folio... lost some steam with this last one as far as how quick the others were wrapping up... figured that i had changed my routine so much my overall mojo was all fluxed up. Primarily being that i wasnt hitting the trail head or climbing gym much at all where before id go several times during the week with the quickness to my fitness.... so im bringing back the flex and moderating my relatively stationary wacom swish swish and trusting that my production will benefit from the balance.

ok, sooooooooooooooooo i finally posted my website! yay! so the link in my signature is legit son. Got a blog too with which ill probably post more sketches in there as well vs. the occasional CA sb action... in any case heres a close up of the intro page... by the by, originally i had grand designs for a custom coded website (as I had many years ago) but I soon realized how unnecessary and time consuming that wouldve been... after all, i just needed a place to send art directors to see my work not a display of web design skill... in any case so i just used "iweb" on my mac... and it was a cinch.

Looking good! Be careful of the centaur feet though, hooves possibly a little too large, and angled slightly wrongly. Nice updates, can't wait for more.

i applied for this game company on a lark, did a "art test"...( were only supposed to spend a couple hours on it) they loved the one catered to males 18-33 or so, but the second meant for older females (both pieces came with style sheets) they feel wasnt as strong as it wasnt "cute" and still carried too much grittiness and the examples they sourced for that one were pretty plasticky and lame to my tastes...hence tweaking it with my style but after the phone interview it seems they might be looking for someone who is less burly than i... or I have to decide if im ok with cute'ting things up..... hmmm.... i told them id go ahead and make a sheet of cutesy characters but unless they offer big $$$$$ for my salary ill probably pass. I figure my passion and best chance to make a mark in this industry is to stay true to what I love drawing/painting and thats in your face Beasties and warriors.... else I run the risk of just becoming another cog in the machine. Not much different than my current job...hmmm....

from sitting in a Borders... doing battle with a case of the "cantdrawworthashitz" on a nice classic arnold pose..... made a quick Gif but it certainly doesnt show all the tweaking i kept doing or the painting and repainting... ARRGGGHHH... oh arnold... your muscles were just too much for my wacom today... grrr.... so i had to cease and desist.
Therein lies the lesson... we all have off moments.... hours... sometimes even days. And when those random pieces present themselves... the best thing to do is to just let it rest and walk away and them come back to it and do battle once again... but in my experience, its not much of a battle at that point and you can see the work that was done wasnt that bad.... fresh eyes will see those chinks in the previous struggle and then with surgical precision handle that bidness with the quickness.

    cool updates, Ryan!
I really like that roman solier sketch.
and the carnivorous plant looks great. even though it's a bit older now, do you plan on working it out further?
    would love to see that!

    sheesh... been awhile....

NEWS!: MONTHS ago i finally posted some finishes that I had been sitting on into the finished section as well as launching a simple folio site and then emailing various RPG publications to go ahead and starting what I like to call "practicing for pay" as any time im drawing its practice in one form or another... always something to new to learn, a technique to refine, etc. SO i did almost immediately hear back from one of the smaller co's and got a couple of small spot illos...

But it was 3 Months after that email/folio launch that I heard from the art director of Paizo! and was offered a substancial gig, 6 portraits and a half page full blown illo!

well I was completely surprised as I was really all set to polish off another batch of folio images (got to get back on that) and restart the fly fishing folio game when that email came.

WHICH is just part of the game... ive learned not to put all my hopes and ego in the casting but to just trust that someone will bite and when they do... its game time.

    ...

Well, i just finished that Paizo job and landed another equally lucrative gig and this time doing my favorite: characters!!! Game on son.

heres one of the faces from the previous job that I ended up not using....

got my third Paizo job the other day, so i think i can safely consider them a regular of mine now. Its a good thing to know an art director can count on you for steady work, mutually beneficial fosho.

in any case, in between starting up my latest assignment and since completing the last one I knocked out another folio piece. Just a good ole burly boy: hey its what I do: neck striations and nice and veiny

included some details and a gif wip.

    hope you dig

recently had some Paizo work hit the shelves... first time doing a "scene"/ enviro... the process certainly showed me that I have the need for plenty of practice... but be that as it may, I think it came out pretty decent.

In any event my goal is just to try to inspire some story telling within my pieces... and i think this one fits into that canon fairly well.

if you want to see a higher rez of the final, check zee blog.

working with Paizo fairly regularly now. and their art director Sarah is great to work with as she gives quite a bit of freedom in the arting... or maybe she just spoils me.

in any case i threw up the full spread of some of the characters Ive done on my cghub page, as well as some other items on my blog for those interested.

With the guy in this post... funny looking back on it in gif form... to see where he stiffened up a lil bit... or how the previous step had some mojo that didnt quite carry over to the next... oh well.. such are the dangers in rendering.

likewise im not sure why i didnt carry over the "magic" marks by his hands... wtf. i liked those.

I enjoyed looking through your sketchbook, there's lots of great stuff there. I especially enjoyed the gifs that showed your process.

When you outline, do you paint over your outline then delete the layer, or do you paint over the lines with greyscale? I saw in the orc face you did that the outline seemed to disappear at one point and I was wondering if you just had it on a different layer or painted over it.

lil morning study. Being doing a lot of LEE studies lately. Love the Legend.

Flame_Unquenchable: i just paint over the lines the further along the process i get. Hence the linework just becomes the structure/underpainting of the final. Stylistically I try to let some of the line work show through as I think it looks cool.... but often times i get carried away rendering everything.

Hi, Bruce is looking good! Really like your original characters as well. That mohawk guy is really cool!~ (the time lapse on it too)
