iphigen: Haha, thank you. I'm really glad to hear that you got a laugh out of them.

WickedEdges: Thanks. I'm definately trying to go to art school somewhere, just not sure where yet. I'm trying to improve as much as I can nowadays.

madhatter106: Thanks for the crits man. Yeah I know what you mean about McCain, I don't think I studied his features enough. Spent about half the time on him than with Obama. Newspaper deadline was approaching. And I'll definately keep that in mind about my figures.

Christoffer: Thank you, I think I'm spending too much time doing digital stuff and not enough with traditional. Thanks for the sympathy as well.

Ok, here is another self-portrait. Trying to make this one look more sketchy. Since I missed international self-portrait day due to visiting RISD, I did one anyway. This one from life, and I'm really pleased with tthe way my colors turned out.

Flaskpost : THanks man, I see what you mean about the planes. I had a relatively soft light, and I guess I was trying to come up with a lighting scheme of my own at the same time and neglected the use of planes.

I've noticed now we have an area to input copyright info when uploading images? Is this due to that Orphan Works Bill or whatever? I haven't been following it too much.

Alright here's more digital stuff, no reference on anything except the self-portrait, from a mirror.

This one is really the first time I just went with something and had no clue what i was doing at the beginning. Hence composition and such may be off. All of these are unfinished, and I don't know if I will continue any of them, but I'm happy with where they're at now.

Here's the color palette I developed before I started this SP, trying not to use colors from life.

Crits are welcome, especially on perspective, color, and composition as that's where I've had the least experience.

Great SPs, man. Keep it up. Those are going to look good going into art school.

WickedEdges: Thanks man, I just had my portfolio reviewed at MICA and they said the self-portraits are great, so I'm going to keep doing as many of those as I can.

DeeLock: Hey thanks, that was a new approach for me, I'm glad it turned out well.

Mr. Juicy: Thanks dude. Well I'm almost 18 now, so don't be too jealous.

OK, nother self-portrait, a character design of Winston from the novel 1984 (Meh, this could be better, any advice is good), and some random doodle that I liked and finished up a bit more(Might still work on it later, but I'm ok with where its at).

sebastian_H Thanks a lot man. You just gotta work your ass off. Well
right now this is still my hobby, but I'm hopefully going to make work out of it
    when I'm out of college.

Ok heres a new one that I think turned out well, finally got around to finishing it.
This first one is the initial color palette I started with, looking for shapes, the
second image is the finished piece. Crits are highly encouraged.

This last piece was really good. you got a great knowledge of light and shadow & color with your age. You´re a great artist, but gonna be better.

Sweet! The last one is really special, in a good way. There is issue imo (like a little lack of strong edges somewhere) but it still work very well.
    Keep it up!

Whoo the last coupla paintings have been sick! the portrait at the top of the page is awesome too...the last two compared with that one at the top have very different styles of brushstrokes, but they both work really well. You've got a command of it for sure...I know you might be limited on time, but keep on pushing/rendering them (especially the last one).

Last one is raw. One suggestion would be to put some type of structure in the foreground. Maybe a buoy on the foggy water?

Hi, i'm new to these forums. I was looking at, i think the mica thread (?), and clicked a link here to your sketchbook.

First off, your digital paintings are AMAZING. holy crap. I wish i could digitally paint. I've always wanted to try it, but i'm too poor to afford a wacom tablet.
What is your process? Do you first block in shapes and then proceed to go up in value and hue and block in smaller areas until you start detailing?
In your anatomy studies, what books do you use?
Did you use any books to learn color theory? Because your sense of colors are great. I wish i could paint skin like that irl...

Keep it up! If i knew how to subscribe, i'd subscribe to this too.

Haha wow I've never recieved so many comments after a single update.

hunchbackmagee: Thanks for looking, its all photoshop. Could never get things going smoothly with Painter.

Bagg: Hey thanks man I'm going to try and produce more like it

soulburn3d: THank you, I was trying to have it give off an ominous vibe thing.

Dan Valkar: Thanks dude, been working on my brush strokes.

Ricardo Robles: Thank you, thats good to hear.

    monsi: Thanks! I will

    kidult: Thank you

clochette: Thanks, and thanks for the crit. I was just trying to keep the edges sharp around the creatures face area, to attract a focal point i think, and leave the rest a little undefined. Maybe that didnt work as well as I'd liked, so thanks for the observation.

DStrax: Thank you, I'll try and spend a little more time on my work.

    oden:
Thanks i've been trying a lot of new things with brushes and such. Sometimes I guess I just get bored with a peice and leave it a little unfinished, i gotta work on that it seems.

Bushido: No problem. Thanks, I'll do some more experimentation with those brushes.

    Omerta: Thanks

    Lakka: Thanks man

Vulgar: Hey thanks for the crit. I agree completely, I was experimenting with a shoddy looking ship in the foreground, but I felt like it was beyond my skill level. I gotta break outta that fear.

Monochromalice: Thanks a lot man. Yeah those tablets are damn expensive, I worked my ass off serving angry people ice cream all summer for that. Process? well its generally a bit different every time. I just wing it mostly. I throw down some colors until I get a few that seem to work well, and I try to quickly define some shapes. Once I get an idea of what I want, I will pick stronger values and lay down the lighting right away, then I'll begin adding more variation to the colors and definition to the elements i've made my mind up about. I use many books for my anatomy studies, bridgman, hogarth, vilppu, loomis, peck, and sheppard all have written some excellent anatomy books that I study from. Colo Theory? Heh, I'll admit i dont really know much about it. I just try to look for colors that are visually appealing I guess. Lots of life studies help with color, i think.

I'll try and reply to each of your sketchbooks in the coming days as well.
Here are two life paintings that I've finished recently, I trying to do a lot of work that would look good in my portfolio for art school, and I wanted to finish these for National Portfolio Day on Sunday. The second one is a bit unfinished, but I've done most of the grunt work.

happy birthday man. still life paints look good, if a little boring. still life can still have exciting composition. I really like that character, really nice structure on the face, and the hand forearm and hand in particular. good stuff.
