Awesome faces, does the hard brush you used have wet edges activated?

Edit: By the way, would you happened to have some wips of this photo study left? I'd really appriciate if you could show some .

I always enjoy the way you put those brush strokes down, cool self portrait, like the backlighting and subdued values in the face.
Thx for dropping by my SB too, much appreciated!

prsnsweeney Thanks for stopping by bro!

Ok a number of people mentioned the edges in that misfits study, so I'll write up a few things I learned from it. It's probably all useless, but here's what went on.

There's an effect that happens when you put down a brush stroke of the middle tone on top of a smooth gradation, where one side of the gradation is darker than the stroke, and the other side is lighter. It gives an optical value shift along the brush stroke that makes it glow, almost like wet edges. Further, adding some kind of sharpen effects to the image makes it look even more so like wet edges.

Usually I use a paint daubs filter to sharpen things up a bit, but unsharp mask or the sharpen tool work well too. I'm sure there's a million ways to get edges sharper. Don't go overboard though, use it sparingly and try to get your edges sharp through actual painting rather than filters or gimicky tools.

Ludic asked for a wip of a previous study, so here is the only other step I have saved.

    wip and final

Ok, a recent study, 1-2 hours I suppose. Haven't painted an apple yet, I suppose it was about time haha. From life. No sharpen filters on this, btw haha. I did try it, but it ended up subtracting from the overall image.

Hey there Jasper! Been lurking through your latest pieces ( brain melting stuff btw ) and something came across my mind. In those wip sequences - in pretty much every case - I liked just the pre-final stage a bit more. Maybe it's just me and my personal tastes or the fact that I used to overwork my pieces and now I see that around. Don't get me wrong those are monster sweet. I just think that you beat them a bit too hard at those final stages. Still a lot of progress and it shows that you're enjoying the process. Take care mate.

It's not nitpicking. It's a valued opinion. Beside I agree, I want the look to run through the whole image. Maybe a mace! But seriously where do you find those girls
