New Round IS ON!
EOW# 76 The Arena
Grenogs- not marked finished
The flat world of Anakarsis was cracked in two parts by an earthquake during its Middle Age. Only after the technological development of flying machines its inhabitants were able to cross the Astrabathys ("Stars in the Deep" in the ancient language of the Whole World). Where the abyss was narrower they built two cities serving two airports, the jump-points towards the other side.
Arbu –WIP too bad you didn’t finish it it had potential
Jokemon – attached image
Voted for hideyoshi because he had 0 votes and his was one of the best entries this round.
If he had more votes I probably would have voted for MEME, because his is probably favorite of the pieces this round. I also liked blinckks and edjuantes very much.
everyone else did a very good job this round but those are my favs.
Blinckk got my vote because it was well rendered, and was really the only one that truly captured the topic. Meme's had great color, details, composition, and a dynamic view, and would have had my vote if it felt more like crossing an abyss. Hideyoshi's was also very good, but I just didn't get the feel of crossing an abyss.
I really liked tsujni's too. However, you gotta fix that moon. It makes the image really unbalanced, and creates a horrible tangent with the cliffs.
There were a few that really needed some more work, not that they were bad, but they just needed to be taken further. Great job everyone!
LOLZ, meme- you rock! hahaha
Awesome work Meme!
Meme tut tut sir! Voting for yourself is a bit naughty, especially seeing as your entry is so good anyway (and your a pro right?). Just take note for next time yeah
My vote went to Blinckk because its really the only one that said 'Abyss' to me. Alot of the entries had an abyss that is brimming with life, light, and colour, but when i think of 'Abyss' I think of a dark, bottomless place that is thin with light and life.
A special mention to joey-B I thought your piece had some amazingly attractive values with colour and tone, but it looks like there is water at the bottom of this friendly chasm, not an 'immeasurable space'.
Hideyoshi a fantastic painting, you clearly have your style trimmed and fit to perfection, but i cant help ask...why would people make a man-made abyss runnimg through their city? definitely not safe for the kids!
AlbinoFox what happened to your entry?? its not even on the WIP thread anymore. Shame to see it go to waste because it was a nice approach to the subject, with a pretty crazy angle.
Hello, i voted for Hideyoshi, I loved the mood of the scene, and the lightning is fantastic, great work!
Very good work everyone!
(Meme, cmon...voting for yourself? You don't even need to do that in order to win.)
Hey guys, Thanks for the votes I was kinda wasted these days I think the voting system should have some preview or something...it's kinda hard this way...Hideyoshi is my favorite so far, maybe needed some more work on it but I love it
Revenebo: nice idea ..the composition is a bit boring ..try to use a different perspective
Hallo: nice and clean, to bad we can't see to much of wat's going on there
joey-b: great colors...needed some details in the foreground
Blinckk: love the colors and contrasts ...is the composition that suffers a bit. Stay away from the simetry in composition
worldofmyown: you have guts with colors. try to use that in composition
Dibbz: great sketch for a matte painting
jfwalls: interesting composition ..maybe some characters in there might help to see he scale of it
ActsOfBob: a bit cketchy and the foreground needs to be darker
tsujni: interesting colors ..nice for a sketch, try to use a different angle to make it more interesting
Putridus Cor: same, try to make it more interesting
edujante: do some research on caves and stuff..you'll find some interesting details to use
Dhoj: very symmetric composition
jomore: nice angle..need to work some more on the perspective
Eelevation: not finished?
peetsbeets: nice mood...just needs some details in there
Some interesting artworks...what I noticed is that the lack of perspective in many works..try to study some tutorials. It's not as hard as it looks
Thanks again guys and sorry for may bad English ...and my hangover I'll try to stay away from beer...after this one
don't vote for yourself
its not "done"
I have removed your vote
thanks to those who pass one crits. it is helpful
one small note matte painting is not actually against the rules. and can be very effective. but just like anything else the quality and ability to get the concept across is the idea.

Hallo- loved it at first sight, but the sun and lightrays didn't convince me at the end.
Dhoj- Very nice sculpture at front, although I liked it more when both where holding the arch with their left hand and caused it to overlap.
Meme- great depth, but too sketchy.
Blinck- great piece, nice brushwork, gets my 2nd place.
Hideyoshi- great scale, like the monumentality of it, got my vote!
v - peetsbeets
As I was saying in the topic thread, it has potential of being a phenomenal vision. Runner-ups: Hallo, Hideyoshi, jfwalls, Blinkkk, and Meme.
Keep doing you

Ok, now I've had enough of EOW, that's it. I am out of here.
Bumskee, I especially value your vote seeing that it came from a truly exprienced artist who can judge accordingly.

Hideyoshi, even though I didn't vote for you, I've always admired your works (which I've seen even before coming to CA). And your submission for this one was no less interesting.
Thanks vulgar, I was pressed for time on that one ><.
I was going to say something but what's the point?

Voted for Meme. Excellent rendering and perspective, although it could've done without the ship in the foreground. There's already enough detail.
Hallo, this was a personal favorite of mine this round. Finesse the "cut-out-hole-in-the-sky" sun and it will be perfect.
Blinckk, Hideyoshi, jfwalls, ActsOfBob, all close seconds.
Revenebo, visions of StarCraft flashed through my head...
Dibbz, I was instantly reminded of The Thing. And a matte painting, while formerly paint on glass, can be used to describe any kind of illustration used in backgrounds. These days it's mostly done in Photoshop anyway.
edujante, I'm calling you out, you can do better than that.
jomore, there are two perspectives at work here. Pick one, and it'll come together. Also, more detail!
Hideyoshi, it's been delightfully obvious for a very long time that you have immense skill... do you really need constant (or absolute) affirmation?
Lot of fresh participants and styles this time around, keep it up...
Corrick: Sharp eye! I fear I can't avoid domed space bases and cities after having played Starcraft... I must try to think to something different next time...
Meme: I often overlook composition, I'm too busy trying to paint things properly and I don't pay attention to the look of the image as a whole.
Hideyoshi: I hope you aren't serious.
Apart from Blinckk's, Meme's and Hideyoshi's, IMHO I especially liked Edujante's piece for the atmosphere (and the most original idea) and JoeyB's for the clean, painterly effect.

Why do people vote on their own pictures ?
voted for blinckk
cool atmosphere and depth/contrast with just enough detail.
Ahh right thanks for clearing that up! I thought a matte painting was painting ontop of an exsting photo or something :/
Voted for Hideyoshi. Loved the lighting in it, although the image seems very rough round the edges.
So, I voted for Hallo and joey-b was a really close second. Hallo's piece was the only one that gave me the feeling of abyss aside from Meme's.
Ravenebo~ good idea, but somewhat dull. spice it up with some unexpected perspective.
Dibbz~ just looks like a hole in the snow, so as far as we know as a viewer from this distance it could be a foot deep, get close to the edge and shove it in our face that it is an endless hole, you will only learn perspective if you try it and practice it!! give us a really interesting view.
Hideyoshi~ you have good concept here but the focus here seems to be more on the arch overhead rather than the abyss below. don't really get the feel of an abyss, because from this view it might only go down a couple of stories... no detail on the forground platform(?)... has a very star wars'ish feel to it. nice overall concept.
jfwalls~ nice, but somewhat boring composition wise, doesn't scream "stop and look at me".
ActsOfBob~ the angle doesn't give us much of a feeling of an abyss, and the focus here seems to be more on the figure than the topic.
tsujni~ nice take on the topic, but the abyss makes me feel like the picture is unfinished, ran out of time, not coherent to the top part of the painting.
Putridus Cor~ keep working on the rendering, it is coming along. The water has a good detailed texture to it, the city and lights feel like they were cut and pasted onto the picture, and the rocks are lacking in detailed effort like the water.
edujante~ I have to agree... I have seen much better from you. great concept, very sketchy though. Really really like the pathway!
Dhoj~ the background seems a little to rushed and sketchy... being as this is an environment thread, I think the whole environment should be accounted for, and not just the architecture. good concept, very nice foreground, just wish there was a bit more of that in the background.
jomore~ the point of view doesn't scream out abyss, more like canyon floor. nice though!
Eelevation~ hmmm... cave... not sure on this one topic fitting wise...
peetsbeets~ to sketchy, nice idea... i suggest developing it more. push the depth of field, add some environmental details.
Hope I didn't miss anyone, good topic!
hideyoshi- I will assume you slipped and didnot mean to vote for your self. you know better. I removed the vote.
I will be moving to the "final burning "poll system like the one oreganos uses for CHOW next week so we can have little icons next to the vote boxes which should help. please be patient as I learn the new way of doing it.
slight spoiler for next week
it will involve pirates!
hideyoshi- I m sorry you feel that way. Your work will be missed as it sets a fine standard of quality for others to work toward.
You cannot be in a art contest to win. One of the great artists down at Weta Workshop said something like this in a magazine(my quote is not 100%): As an artist you should know that your work might not always get picked as the best concept by the Art Director, even if its the best looking. So you need to do art for yourself and your own exploration.
Guess what he said was smarter but
