Neat idea! I think I'm going to give one of these _____ a week things a go.

    2 questions:

1- Could we have multiple arenas-- sort of a series?
2- Is there allowed to be something happening in the arena? (I was thinking of having large creatures in it, and I'm afraid they might take up too much focus. But if it were completely empty it might not be exciting enough...)

I'm guessing he used a huge soft edge brush but it's only conjecture

Yeah, I did this all in photoshop, using mainly a round brush with varying sizes and soft edges. The atmoshpere is done using larger soft edge brushes. Thanks for the nice comments!

Are you sure you're not borrowing a little bit too many elements from Cicinimo's painting for GuildWars?

    My entry:
    EOW#76 The Arena

    3h @ Photoshop

I will probably improve it if I have time. If I haven't, I will just edit my post and add final.

    C&C are welcome

Well I know I should improve my previous entry, but I prefered to make a new one.
It probably have nothing to do with an environment, but I think it's better than my previous one.

    What do you think?

    (sorry about my bad english)

I wouldnt let Chaos hear you say that, she's not been too happy with the "all I have time for" lines of late.

sillikone I would agree with you but 'stealing' should not be so literal. We all 'steal' elements from other artist's work using our subconscious, even if we dont realise it. But this particular image is a little close for comfort in relation to the Guildwars concept i have to admit. Hfix try and take elements you like from many different images and pool them together to form a new one, instead of taking them all from 1 image alone. If this was purely coincidental then many apologies, and maybe a change of perspective would greatly help this problem if you want to stick to your arena design.

I am very keen to design an arena, but I really want to start teaching myself 3D, something that I really should have done a long time ago! I guess we will have to see whether i can resist this subject or not!

jomore, I think you need to work on the perspective a little bit. Looks like 3 different perspectives and I'm having trouble placing the airship. It looks to be right above the arena wall but I'm not sure. Also your lighting is off, I realized that after trying to look for the shadow of the airship. If you draw a ray from the sun through the window you'll see that your shadows are too 'short'.

ccraaaaapp... Chaos, did there need to be a contest? I thought it was just about the arena, so my event is more benevolent and harmonious than a competition... I hope this doesn't disqualify me

Since I'm being forced to go on vacation this week, I doubt I'll be able to finish this to good quality (my sickly laptop battery will make sure of that). But there's still the chance I'll finish it in time to enter... If I decide to finish it, and it's after the deadline, I might post it here just for the heck of it.

But I'm deciding to post what I started, anyway. The arena is a huge aquarium, intended for a sport involving divers, and also for battles for monstrous genetically-engineered sea creatures. I haven't drawn the bleachers yet, which I plan to make come out like branches of a tree (though even) concentrically. It's gonna have a stilted city in the background.

Another note is that this isn't going to be the composition. I made an ultra-wide canvas so that I could do 2D perspective without it getting distorted. I'm probably going to make the arena larger and more towards the left.

As you can see, I've gotten a little obsessed with structural drawing...
By the way, I was thinking of making this my excuse for experimenting with SketchUp, but... it seems like that program couldn't get these more complicated forms like oblong spheres-- could be wrong here though...

You stole my idea!! I'm already working on a similar project. Curious to see how yours is going to turn out. Coincidentally, mine is on a super wide canvas too...

Am i allowed to enter images that are completely created with 3d programs? i see a couple of people have mentioned sketchup, which i'm pretty experienced with, but could i render out images in maya to enter? i've been following the thread for a while but theres no way my painting skills are up to it and i've been looking for some projects to improve my 3d?

    cheers

    EOW#76 The Arena

Some sketches for perspective, lighting and look. What I'm figuring is some kind of vertical amphitheater, like XIX centuy anatomy theaters, for a post-apocalyptic world or for a warrior ants society.

I lacked inspiration for the fourth one so I put the newspaper of my city (Verona) called L'Arena (The Arena)... Is it a valid entry?

The Arena. needs to be a place where an event happens. Up to you to decide what and how.

So when i was sketching yesterday i got up with this idea kind of similar to Star wars, where you have some sort of raceing machines powering through a desert landscape, but instead of a main arena i wanted the viewers to sit in columns along the path kind of ... still very conceptual , did a value study today. Will scan in some marker sketches when i get hold of a scanner.

No vehicles or anything added yet ... People on top right foreground indicates scale, will use the middle ground pillar as main focal object i think

    Comments critts are MOST welcome

gundersen: a good starting point and an interesting idea IMHO, reminds me of a large, open scenario in Unreal Tournament (and of Star Wars, as you wrote).

I have no problem with you doing it in Maya. its about the idea and getting it across. just remeber what you show us has to be convincing and complete in itself.

gunderson ... its a sport or and event.... but is it an arena? I m not so sure.
btw I love the idea.. sort of like a steeplechase on horseback.

    from the online dictionary
    1.
    1. An enclosed area for the presentation of sports events and spectacles.
    2. A building housing such an area
    2. A place or scene where forces contend or events unfold: withdrew from the political arena; the world as an arena of moral conflict.
    3. The area in the center of an ancient Roman amphitheater where contests and other spectacles were held.

To see the world in a grain of sand, and a heaven in a wildflower, hold infinity in the palm of your hand, and eternity in an hour.

yeah i guess it depends how you look at the assignment. For my part i think an Arena is a very wide open subject if we are free to develope new ideas. In my dictionary it says exactly what you say almost. A level area surrounded by seats for spectators, in which sports, entertainments, and other public events are held So you are absolutly correct on the point about the classical arena that we envision, the Coloseum

But in my mind The Arena as title also should tell more then just a simple football stadium. As an artist we are so lucky to be able to envision new things, make stuff that doesnt exist beliveable. How would an Arena look like if it was a battle game for Gigantic star ships? Maybe in even bigger ships floating around the battle scene? No one knows ... freedom in art is the greatest thing we have.

Glad you like the idea, will post an update later. Will work on bringing in more elements of an arena, such as seatings for audience hehehe
