I'm not sure what to do about this, tell me your opinion.
Right on the front page as well.
    go here w w w . g n o m o n 3 d . c o m (without the spaces)

kinda looks like this one I did, hmmm...
Geesh, I'm away for awhile and look what I find...

I guess I should keep on top of this sorta of stuff, I have been away from the computer doing more traditional studies, but creatures and characters have always been calling me back.

It changed the links I am not sure why, e-mail me if you want to get the links
For some reason when I post the word g n o m o n 3 d it automatically changes it to just 3d, which is the wrong site. wtf

here goto (without the spaces) w w w . g n o m o n 3 d . c o m, on the front page. Could someone explain why it changes the address in the link automatically when I submit the post on this thread.

definitely looks like someone was "inspired" by your work.

That's a student's work, right? I suppose, maybe, they added enough new things to make it sorta their own....uh, kind of.

Yeah I found that out when I was trying to direct someone to the gno mon site in a private message a while back...no idea why it happens. As for the image, theres no doubt at all that yours has been pretty heavily referenced. There's no link to that dude on the site but heres his folio site:

    http://www.aryafx.com/index.html

I guess on the plus side, he's done a nice job of it (small consolation I know), but it's pretty lame he didn't even contact you to ask permission, especially as it's on such a prominant site, fair enough if it was just a little practice piece he did for himself, but thats not exactly a little post on deviant art or something-no credits, nothing, to most people it's going to look like his work, his concept, and on the off chance that someone sees yours, after his, your going to be the one who looks like the theif. If it were me I'd at the very least email him (the links on his site) and tell him you want to be credited, and also find out if he's making money off it, because if he has, (and this is just my opinion, I have no idea what the legal position on this is) you should be entitled to a share.

As a 3d artists, people frequently use concept art that they admire to base some of their personal art on, because as 3d artists, most of us aren't great concept artists.

Some people ask permission, some dont. As long as its used as a personal piece, I don't think theres anything too wrong with it. Its on the same level as fan art.

If everyone who wanted to model a Feng Zhu concept e-mailed Feng first, then he'd never get any work done from replying to e-mails.

Perhaps I'm wrong, but I dont see this as true plagiarism, although you should certainly give credit to the original concept artist.

Another thing to keep in mind is that it doesnt exactly match your concept. I'd say its different in quite a few ways, not to mention the fact that I have seen other art depicting a creature similar to yours.

Its a thin line the guy is on, but I dont think he crossed it.

If you guys dissagree, feel free to let me know your thoughts.

Plagiarism, yeah sure, kindof. But it was for a school assignment, noone's getting paid for your work nor depriving you of payment through this. So I wouldn't call it a scam. If it bothers you that much, ask the school to remove the pic referencing to your original. But since it's not scam-material, I'd just takes it as flattery in your situation. Call me a capitalist, but I personally judge copyright issues based on who's getting paid or not.

On a side note, that Chtulhu's got awful small wings...

I don't see anything actionable there. Looks like a legitimate reinterpretation.

cant sue anyone if its not being sold, think of it as fan art, contact him and talk to him about it.

Whats that saying about copying is the greatest form of flattery?

Well thats the good thing about this forum you can hear differing opinions from your own.

I am not going to "go after" anyone, I have seen my art borrowed before and most of the time I am flattered. I always like to see what my characters would look like in 3d. Most of the time I have been written to ask for permission. I wouldn't put anything borrowed in my portfolio, but I have worked with 3d artists who would ask me to borrow my sketchbook to make creatures for practice which doesn't bother me.
I am surprised that the school would post this on their front page ( which they are making money by posting students work trying to get people to enroll and buy their products) and not ask about the art work. Written permission would have been respectful.

On a side note: They are not wings or spines running down his back, but barnacles growing on his back from being in the ocean for a long time.

Also, I am still confused why I cannot put the word g n o m o n in a hyper link, it automatically wipes the word from the address, weird.

    Hi Guys

I created the images in question and I would like to state that I honestly didnt know who created the concept image since it was not signed (I had found the image on our school server). I had asked around but couldn't get a concrete answer.

With that said, the image I created was indeed based-off of Jeffs image and I have emailed and sent him a private message asking if he wants me to remove the image. I have also credited him in my CG Portfolio on CGTalk.

I hope that cleared everything up.

    Holy crap!

I didnt even know that was there!

Well, I guess I (or someone) should tell Jeff. I had emailed and pm'ed him but I have not received a response, so if anyone knows how to get hold of him, that would be cool.

Why not just have the credit of the concept go back to the original artist and both of you win by having yourself promoted across the web? I mean now that you know who owns it...course that's up to the original artist.
