your comment about broken up highlights make sense, i think because a person's skin is not 100% smooth. i think that just adds more to the realism what dpi do you work on?

Nice bougereau copy. Super soft Some whites in #120 would be nice - the style of sketch is nice but overall pretty dark, going with that toned surface but working with both dark and light on top would be cool. I like your bird creature thing too. Creepy.

redSpade: Yes, exactly! Same goes for most surfaces, you'd be hardpressed to find an organic surface that's completely smooth. I usually work at 300dpi

saa:Thank you very much! Every bit of encouragement helps!

Poshspice:Aly! Wow! I lovelove your work, I'm honoured!

Trollfar:Thank you! I do think you should aim much higher though All credir for the awesome design of the alien must go to Damien Canderle. I'm just copying

Quinn Simoes:Thanks!! I seem to have a bit of a bird phase going on, haha.

nonie:Thanks nonie! I agree about the highlights, I wanted to add them in but got lazy. I'll post a version with it soon.

Coinpurse:I'm blushing, I'm blushing! (well, as much as I can) Thank you so much for your kind words, you totally made my day!

    ShaunLey:Thank you very much

    frixon: Thank you!

Markusthebarbarian:Hehe, thank you! I'll do my best to kick my lazy self into posting more

iamgale: Whee, I'm glad the birdman comes across as creepy. Thank you so much for your wonderful words!

So, I've been doodling very little lately, mostly on paper since we've been having so many powercuts.I hope to scan them soon!
Here's a quick update on the birdman (are you tired of it already? one more pass, that's all, I promise!) I am still undecided on the whole scheme, bleh. I am getting rather tired of the reds and purples and the yellows seem so much better. Any tips on composition would be highly appreciated. Oh, and I still have to paint the far wing and leg, heh. I finally got myself to paint the wing, I looked at Zephyri's beautiful angel paintings till I got inspired enough to paint, hehe.

It's my b'day! Whee! Oh no!

The Praying Mantis is one of the most realsistic drawings ive seen on this site, if you squint just a little bit I think nobody can say if its real or not... Fantastic! (except my phobia of the Mantis) Your eye for highlighting things is incredible..

I agree with the yellow version being stronger... it warms up the entire image, and the green-blue tint to the wings is a nice contrast to the reds and oranges towards the bottom. Can't wait to see it done.

Nellin:Aw come on, mantises are gorgeous! I currently love the Idolomantis Diabolica, mmmm pure evil! Heheh, thank you!

BohemianChaos:Yea, I think I am partial to that one too Thank you!

This isn't really an art update, my apologies for the bump.

BUT, I've been playing out with making different brushes in Photoshop that are a bit more..painterly. While I haven't really got what I am looking for, I did end up making one smudge brush that gives loooovely paint-like results. So I just I'll share it with you guys Not sure where to post it, so posting it here.
Two examples of the blending too (sorry about the bright colours and the size of the images!):

1 is just the patches that need to be blended.

2a is where I took a regular round brush and did some rough in-between blends (colour pick on one patch and go over lightly on the other and then colour pick the second patch and go over the first) and 3a is the blending done with the smudge brush.

2b is the smudge brush used directly on the patches.

I am using an opacity of 30% with this brush, with opacity also set to pressure.I recommend using it along the patch edge, and then across it.I hope you like it

man the last two portraits you did are fantastic....

your self portrait is so "juicy", and i don't mean that in a creepy way, but seriously it has this "ripe fruit" quality to it.

if you have a bunch of face refs of yourself that you are willing to share, i'm trying to learn the female face( see my sketchbook for proof, seriously im not hitting on you ). Let me know if you are willing to share or if you are doing these only from mirror/life study.

keep up the great work, wowzer.

I was gonna mention the same thing as davi... What's going on with the wing and that environment? Needs to be addressed. Also... I rather liked those dark nodules on the neck/jaw area... What was your thinking about/why did you ditch them?

One last thing: I get an internal StuffitExpander error message when trying to expand the smudge brush file... any way you could send me that file uncompressed?

    amordecosmos: Thank you!

jordyskateboardy: Heheh, thanks. Bit of an OCD I think

Delmar: Thank you very much. I'm not sure if I get the values sorted out all the time, but I do know that practising all the time helps

davi: Wow davi, that's a huge compliment! Thanks! I don't really have too many pictures of myself, most of them are just arty where you can't see most of me (like http://cathartsis.com/shr.jpg uhh, feel free to paint from it if you want haha) I love being drawn by others though, so I'll send you a few pics soon hehe.
About the birdman, that silly wing/mountain tangent was on my head bugging me all the time. I told myself I'd fix it when I got to painting the bg, so soon I hope.

    luness:Thanks! Still working on it

Freidenker:Hehe you're funny Thanks for the kind words!

William b. Hand: I still have them! I took them off coz they were distracting me as I was painting other stuff but I put them back again. Heh
Here's the link to the brush again, CA won't let me attach an abr. http://cathartsis.com/shreyaSmudge.abr If it doesn't work let me know and I'll email it. It's not a supercomplex brush or anything, I was just rather happy with the results.

    wholecar: Thank you!

Sigit: Thanks! Well, I think if used well it's not an issue. don't use it a whole lot myself because I don't like the superblended look, but it can help in bits and parts. The reason people advocate the whole 'stay-away-from-that-smudge' is because it can really kill the painting when overused to make hair and fire and such. In any case, the same brush and also be used as a paint brush so if you severly hate the notion of smudging you can just use it to paint.

    lewiston: Thank you very much!

So, a friend suggested I should try drawing some cute things for a change.
Well...I tried. It might not be cutest thing around though.
Oh and the blood on the mouth is from the poor thing biting his lip too hard, he's afraid you see

Well at first i thought that overwhelming feeling was just some sort of emulation but its definetely too painful to be anything else but hateful jealousy...

According to u what is the element that makes some of ur stuff so incredibly realistic and simply awesome?
A very efficent memory of textures and shape? Very accurate observation? A lot of work and practice? the three?
Hope u dont mind answering the little interview...

Your definately my favourite renderer on this site so far. I love your work, could you recommend any material on color?
