What do you believe is true even though you cannot prove it?

Every year they have this pow wow at www.edge.org, called the World Question Center. They ask renowned individuals to answer the question of the year. In 2006, the question was, "what is your dangerous idea". But in 2005, the question was "What do you believe is true even though you cannot prove it?" They get all sorts of answers from every perspective imaginable. I thought I'd scam the idea...

So that's the topic of this thread, "What do you believe is true even though you cannot prove it?"

    I'll bite...

    (1) That everyone infatuated by modern art is fully capable of appreciating the Old Masters on their own terms and achieving a far higher level of aesthetic appreciation than they realize.

    (2) That certain veins of underground metal are some of the most beautiful and elegant genres of music ever conceived.

    (3) That we are not alone in this universe.

Homecooked meals are more nutritious than packaged food; even if they somehow manage to contain exactly the same ingredients.

    Admittedly, it's kind of cheeseball.
Rationally I know, love is not an ingredient.

But in this fast-food frozen-dinner instant-gratification age, cooking is more a social act than the biological notion of receiving fuel. It's a nice simple sentimental gesture. And I really believe even the smallest reassurance that somebody out there cares enough to fuel you eloquently makes all the difference to your health.

Simple answer.Somewhere out there are aliens just like us or far superior, and eventually we will be able to colonize and live on other planets. I know, I'm an optimist.

    Im with the alien guys.

To me, the fact that we exist [not to mention every other lifeform on Earth] proves life is possible in this universe and therefore must exist somewhere else.

That good art isn't just a matter of taste.

Though, given enough time and patience from the listener I reckon I could have a damn good stab at changing their mind.

    1) That english TV reporter Jill Dando was murdered by Sir Cliff Richard;

    2) Other life do forms exist in outter space, and any alien abducting on this Earth, is a result of drug use or secret government experiments (if WE cant get any further into space, why should we expect other life forms to aswell?)

    3) That Tony Blair is a terrorist; God told him to go to war (apparently) so, need I say more? bastard

    4) That in 20 years time, da Inglish langweege will chainge 2 fernetic spellin' (becoz kids will 4get to spell proper)...and 75% of kids wont know wot a potato looks like

    5) Jesus (or Jeezuss, Jaysuzz) is an Irish name

    Text pretends it is comprehensive.

Ego is caused by faith in text.

Self-Hatred is caused by a disconnect between ego and reality.

    Hatred stems from self-hatred.

    Hatred corrupts more than Power.

The first step toward membership in a cult is faith in text.

Only a sane person can accept blame.

That many animals are far closer to "sentience" than we commonly assume.

Another animal related on..more of a quote (by William Blake) than a statement, but I believe it to be true, "How do we know but that every bird that cuts the airy way is an immense world of delight, closed to our senses five"

And another quote, from HP Lovecrafts "The Call of Cthulhu" - "The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity..."
