    Howie's SP

Here is a self portrait I just finished for my intro to painting class

I'm pretty happy with it, I think it looks a lot like me except the nose is a tad too long. My teacher told me that i needed more highlights on the face and hair which i agree with. Also the shirt feels a little flat. Anyway, any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Alright, uhhh, couple of things. First off, that hair line once it passes your brow isn't believable -- it has no weight to it, probably doesn't come out that far, and definitely not with an angle like that. Second, take a look at this in the mirror and I think you'll find that it's leaning to the right (or to the left in the mirror). So far as highlights go, I think this could use a bumping up in tonal extremes on both ends -- the face and the hair together is pretty neutral, especially the hair. It doesn't look real, it just kinda looks like a helmet. Also of great importance: you should focus in on the eyes -- they're almost flesh colored and they don't really sit in as much as eyes do.

    Nice start. Keep at it.

thanks Myxomatosis, really appreciate the feedback

Edit: i did a digital paint over the hopefully addresses some of the issues

-chalked out the eyes a little
-more highlights and contrast to hair
-messed with where the hair line meets the brow
