Some paintings I'd like your critiques on ** Update 12.18.07 **

Here is some of the recent work that I've been doing. The first two are my mini-series about Autumn, and the last one is my current work that I've been commissioned to do for my church in a series of paintings about Jesus from an Old Testament perspective. Any comments or criticisms are welcome, I don't have artistic people around me anymore so I need any help I can get.

The second and fourth ones in this post are very competent. Since I have been focusing on composition myself as of late, the comments that I am going to give will be based on that. The second appears well done, however, compositionally, it dead ends. I am drawn to the pile of leaves, but my eye is not drawn around the rest of the picture plane. The parallel lines if color create multiple barriers for the eye and keeps them from wandering into that area of the plane.

The composition on the fourth one are better. The edge angles keep me focused on the eyes. Much better design. The flat dark areas are actually distracting me from the figure subjects...

The problem with the third in my opinion is tha the background black area is reallyflat

Whatever you do, don't look at my Sketchbook and Painting Thread!

Pay attention to your edges- they're almost all hard, with the exception of the foliage in the trees where they're all soft. I recommend checking out this short but excellent thread:

It looks like those paintings are done with acrylics. Edges are often a particular challenge with acrylics.
