I need tips from current graphic novel artists

Just recently, I've been asked to do art for two graphic novels. However, I'm not familiar with how the pricing goes. They want to know what I charge for penciling, inking a page etc. I would like to know if someone here can give me an idea by posting what they usually charge. This will give be a little better understanding. Remember, I'm a graphic novel noob here.

This is actually too difficult a question to answer.

Way more info is required... who asked you to do the two graphic novels? If the projects aren't attached to a company (or somebody who's independently wealthy), you might be talking back end/residuals only... No up front money or page rate... In which case if the books sells you make some percentage, if it doesn't, you don't make anything.

Whatever the project, you better make sure you have money coming in from some source or other, and that the project is something you can accomplish *and* enjoy.

If you can manage to get some money against future royalties, that will be a good way to go. Again, though, it depends on if its a company you're in talks with, or just somebody you know. (In which case you might work up a proposal based on a few pages and the story outline to pitch to a company to see if you can get a commitment to the project, and thus up front money or a page rate with which to work)

Yea thats all true. Well I'm already working with a book company doing cover art and they require contracts. That's all gravy. So, assuming I get some background info on this new project and the people working for it, it should legitimize it. This graphic novel project has people that are pretty established with Dark Horse and Image. We'll see. Thanks for your input.
