Chow #099 -the Herald Of The Queen

    ROUND #99

    THE HERALD OF THE QUEEN
    -------------
This topic is open. To an extent.

The Herald is a powerful member of the Queens' court, announcing her arrival and departure, and acts as her body guard and protector. A knight of unrivaled power, The Herald is the one who champions the Queen and all her ventures.

This character must be powerful. Watch your anatomy - we need a heroic, but believable character. This character needs to look the part - poised, strong, in control even in adverse situation.

The character needs to be executed in a more realistic manner - no cartoons or comic styles will be accepted.

If you're off target - you will be disqualified.

Haha, got a little tired of the cartoony stuff from the last few CHOWs? Just a quick question: can we still go a bit over-the-top with certain things like armor or weaponry, or do you want that pretty down-to-earth as well?

Anyways, sounds fun to me! LET'S DO THIS THING!!

EDIT: Here's my first WIP, guys! I got up to my initial sketch and values... Hopefully I can tighten it up tomorrow evening. Haven't quite figured out what I'm gonna do with the spear yet, but yeah.

    Ahh... Scary.

Male, realistic, open description (mostly). I could screw this one up really badly (worse than normal even) if I'm not super careful. Heh.

'Cuz life is full of your regrets, and I should be one...

interesting. but when you say no cartoon or comic styles, is there a limit? Are simple line drawings out similer to fedbak, or is it the cute and cudly looking stuff out. Also how does manga or game style conept fit in, as a lot off game characterisations are done in a over exagerated and comic style with big hands, big feet, huge sword, etc...

Well I agree with some parts. But to tell you the truth limiting the style of CHOW is not fair. Sence this is the biggest Cummunity competion we have on this site, limiting the style to artist who prefers realistic style, kind of sucks. I would say that the topics were a bit cartoony, forcing most of the artist to be cartoony. The whole purpose of CHOW was to take the concept and draw it in your own style. Your own interpetation. Thats what the purpose of the concept artist. To take the idea not the style. They get hired for their style. I wouldn't say Lukavi's art uses the realistic style, but his style rocks and won the concept of the Queen.

Thats just my opinion not tellin ya how to do ya job. Hope I didn't step on toes. I just think its fun to see everybodies style.

I'm gonna use the two jokers in the deck.

Oh! Just checking, does 'our queen' have anything that needs to be significant to our Herald or is it a fresh anything you want look?

    No offense, BUT;

Thank you for explaining to me what CHOW is about.

CHOW is not about doing what the artist WANTS.

CHOW is about following the BRIEF.
If you want to be a concept artist, you need to be able to provide the concepts in whatever "style" your employer requires. If you don't, they *will* hire someone that can.

CHOW is a proving ground for professional illustration.

CHOW is meant to be difficult, and is meant to challenge the artist.

If you want to participate in something that is more open ended, please consider the COW, EOW, IDW or any of the other esteemed competitions we have on this site.

Good question! Nothing specific that I can think of that wouldn't give away the final - Just be creative!

I think the part that you need to focus on is the "realistic" aspect - push your anatomy for this one.

Line art can be executed in any number of ways - realistic is one of them. Fedbak has no worries. Manga qualifies as cartoon.

I would prefer to see more "down to earth" - but if you think you've got the chops to pull off something over-the-top and get it to poll, go for it. Just keep in mind, you man not get there.

It's not an automatic disqualification, but you run the serious risk of doing yourself some damage.

Micaiah: Oregano's absolutely right... While it's definitely fun to see other people's ideas for a topic, there's also a lingering issue with many artists not being able to work outside their "preset style", so to speak. CHOW is a great opportunity to try new techniques and do things different from what you're comfortable with. The more you experiment and expand your skills, the more valuable you'll be to employers.

    oh sweetness!
Hopefully I get my computer back in time to throw the linework into Painter and let it rip

I like the "limitations" in this one.
The industry won't adapt to one's own skills... here's a chance to try out something new and demanding. Hell yeah! rejoice at the challenge!

    Oh and yeah...
What's the point of doing anything if it isn't a challenging thing? One will never get far staying in one's "comfort zone"
Progress is about doing what's hard and sometimes what one may think sucks... but no matter how grueling the expirience, with the right attitude, one'll always come out the better from it.

    Question!
I don't see a gender being specified... is it safe to assume then that it is up to the artist's judgement?

Do you mind if we go more towards futuristic/sci-fi than fantasy/historical? Also can we make it an evil herald for an evil queen? Do we have to show the queen as well or only the herald?

i was just thinking about that, i'm sure it doesn't have to be a totally regal, traditional queen.

I always thought the Herald was just the spokesperson of the crown (like a REALLY important messenger), didnt realize he was a bodyguard also. Iv got the image of a fairly skinny man in a large tabard, weilding a septre! better get back to the drawingboard for this one

cool subject none the less, should be able to join in the fun

Nice topic! I'll have to find time somewhere to do this unlike with the last few, guess I'll just have to take a break from LMS this week
Does the herald have to be a specific gender though?
