I'd say keep the background on Tracey. Are those reference photos? The lighting on the girls face under the helmet is great! You might want to light the bodies with a bit more descriptive light though if you're going to be painting from these. Right now the light doesn't do much to convey the volume of the figures. Try a 1 light setup with a clip light or something similar, it does wonders!

    Good jorb, dude!

Kept the background, thanks. The critique went well. Actually, I just wanted to show the t-shirts I made with the photos. I only used one light, but yeah, I wish the models had better volume to them, the pics are a little fuzzy.

Here are the next illustration class ideas (the theme is expression):

Nope, that's just my History teacher. I think he read that phrase in one of Nietzsche's books (edit: actually, it's Chamberlain- "pseudo-Hebraic mestizos").

Here are the ideas for the next project. It's illustrating a story about a fat woman who meets a skinny man. She can't stop eating since she's been having so much sex, and he can't eat since he's stopped having sex.

Dude, awesome concept for an illo! It's like a modern "Jack Spratt". I think the first drawing more strongly conveys your idea and has nice movement, but feels a bit empty compositionally. If you threw a table being knocked over or maybe a more rigid, upright background element to really highlight their movement it could go a long way to ground the scene a bit...I guess I don't know about either of those suggestions, really... but it needs something more. The second one is hilarious and has a lively, full composition but looses the information about weight/eating. It is a really strong design though and worth working up, even if as a separate work!

    Great work dude!

Thanks again. Actually, it's a short story by Rebecca L. Conner. Everyone in class has to make an illustration for it. My teacher says to go with the first picture, which sucks because I wanted to do something more creative like the second one.

I love coming to your sketchbook because there's always something funny in here! "Dick" made me LOL.

I really like the execution of the drawing on the final fat lady/skinny guy picture... it's Ren and Stimpy-esque. Recipe for Art is nice too, it has nice texture and values... speaking of, I think your value structure is something that you should pay more attention to. This applies doubly when you're working on what will be a full, finished illo. The fat lady picture is pretty much all the same value when I squint at is, whereas the "Horn of Africa" drawing has a nice combo of mostly dark values, some mid tones and a little lights when squinted at. It's just one more tool you can use to guide the eye and give it places to rest.

Keep doing that creative goodness you do!

Thanks, dudes. Here're my ideas for the next project. We have to make an illustration for "Defining The Magic," a poem by Charles Bukowski. The poem is about what a good poem means to the author.

I like how you present your t-shirts, very funny!
The painting is nice, good job on the reflected light. I think the apple at the top has too much contrast (squint your eyes and look at it). The transitions look better in the other two apples.

Just discovered two really cool Japanese bands from the same musician: Koenjihyakkei and Ruins. Check them out for weird, fun, jazzy stuff! You can download free mp3s from their record label, Skin Graft. http://www.skingraftrecords.com/audio.html

Dude, your shirts rock. You screen print them yourself? If so, we should set up some t shirt exchange! oh and a nice oil still life i spy, splendid. But be wary to watch out on your proportions on your sketches man, some faces are looking a bit funky.
