Progress on my black, and orange blood sucking terror - latest COW. Trying to start from something that exist for real in the nature just to prevent myself from flaying to much away with imagination (+ i want to use opportunity to do some real animal studies).

Hello there. Thank you for your vote on this weeks COW.
I like the way your Dryad is looking, and would love to see it finished even if it does make the deadline. It is a more unique and grotesque approach not many have the balls for. Moar work and studies dude!!!

A tutor once said to me: "Let your mind go!" and it didn´t come back.

Hi Tsabu, cool stuff you got. I especially like your orange and black blood sucker. I really like how you've shown the translucence of its exoskeleton by painting in some veins and such.

I just have a little critique on two things. I decided to do red lines over top, since I'm better with images than words. I hope that's okay.
Anyways, I tweaked your female elf's lips a little, and adjusted the position of her neck. It's a little too far out.
And the second one is just a suggestion for your dryad. Try out different leg types, and maybe make her feet like tree roots or something.

Hey big thanks for crits bbwolf, and Mellori !

bbwolf Definitely right that i should work, and study more - i'm planning to start some real life weekend drawing curses soon. In theory i came out from school with artistic profile where i had human figure drawing lessons, but in practice i never really mastered these topic... I think these should also burn me a bit more for work. Working only on tablet, or small sketchbook can make you perceive all artistic process slightly to shallow.

    Mellori
Big thanks for taking your time in making and posting these two images
Yes! These neck position on elf female was a pain for me. I was seeing that there's something wrong with these neck, but i couldn't figured out what!
Messed these picture a bit because i used to many models references, like 6 or 7...
Still trying to rescue it so these should help a lot!

Dryad suggestion are pretty useful too in current state she looks slightly to stiff, and her foots to much dino, or dragon likes - usually i like these kind of foots, but they doesn't fit to well to dryad concept

Anyway here's same dryad with some colors already - didn't implemented any suggested changes so far because i made these before reading them

I need to tell that your creatures have oryginal look by your workflow, with some advantages and disadvantage.
You use a lot of soft brush, too much sometime. Check ctrlpaint.com lessons 101 and make some exercise every day, just like I make.
Sometime egdes of your creatures are to smooth, they need in hard light spots hard edges.
Observe nature around you, everything in fact.
Attention to edges of shadows, lights and forms, learn about the conect beetwen they looks like.
Your orange blood sucker terror is really great, is better than other works.
    With regards Kamil

    Thanks Betty86 and Swiezy!

That't right i'm slightly too much addicted to the soft brushes, somehow i can't get to take these simple hard one's, need to finally force myself and start using them.
Thank for advice with observations! I'm often asking myself on what should i focus my observations in casual life - usually i'm focusing just on the colors These should brake a bit my lazy observation routine!

Here's my progress on latest COW godzilla monster- Goes horrible from early beginning - worked on him a lot, but deadline coming soon and it still looks like a crap - way to messy... Think i should stop in some point, and try to draw him from other point, or simply make a different creature, but now its to late.

Still not exactly finished, but i will stay it in current state for now and hopefully finish later. Few pieces of progress, i think the 4 one is better than last one.

A carton cowboy icons. I think i could make frames more interesting but i didn't wanted overall to cram composition to much. Keeping simplicity was important for me.

Thanks for dropping by my sketchbook! I really want to see some more life studies and take a look at some anatomy books as there can be some twists and turns that seem a bit rough. Otherwise you're really progressing. Keep up the good work!

Kinda trashy update, but its a sketchbook not finished thread after all

    1. Unfinished shark hunter (2 versions).
    2. Wip for Freestyle COW.
    3. Different gestures - Inspired by Michael Mentler works i'm trying to make my own researches about human anatomy, and how to simplify human body into simple forms.
    4. Human skeleton, pelwis, shoulder blade, and foot.

Wips, of my latest COW. Didn't accomplish to finish it on time, but i learned a thing, or two about technique how to draw nice clean linear picture - mostly inspired by latest Randis youtube video

May looks pretty basics, but i still have a lot of troubles with using multiple layers, and not get lost, or with keeping layers clean and ready for quick color changes without any accidental pixel dirties, etc.

Still tons of work on my way to become good illustrator

    Troublesome Nessy

My latest COW attempt my seems to by kinda embarrassing
But the bright side of my lamely Nessy designs is that again i learned few things.

1 No matter how good your anatomy references are, as a novice you won't finish nice linear work without good clear sketch.

2 No matter how good you feel with working with paints, you won't make good design without proper shadows placed into your sketch.

    3. Trying to jump primal "boring" things (2 of them pointed above) will end up with smearing your creature over, and over again... and all the time you will see that there is something wrong with it - (which is lack of proper design, and linear sketch with shadows on it) .

Not exactly finished, but oh well, was close

Working with flat colors bored me, so inspired by some Feng Zhu videos i tryed to make a pictures in hes cinema like style. Finished piece is slightly naive, but i guess could be worst, making good composition + values aren't so easy as it looks on Feng videos

Cool ideas in this SB! Just study hard and you will be awesome.
I love the fat dragon filled with helium and the dog couple posts ago, good pieces. Only thing for the dog, the background just suppressed it, it's a dark object on dark and saturated background, the background completely took away the focus from dog.
Also I'm wondering about the big pauses in this SB, it started back in 2007! Did you draw also when you didn't posted here, because you have a big improvement on this last page?

    Hey thanks Vanaga

I am often asking myself do i progressing at last slightly, or i am standing all the time on the same level making same mistakes over, and over again.
Your words bring a bit of light on all these work

Yeah i started these sketchbook back in 2007 when i was still in the college (LOL only 3 pages since than ) Later on i was focused mostly on projects for advertising stuff, and when i had a time i was painting abstractions with oils.

About half year back from now i bought new tablet, and decided to give digital painting another try. I really like to have dirty hands while working with oils, but from other hand, hey we got 21 century! Time to use some of these digital techniques we got on the plate

Here's my latest EOW Centaur Rendezvous Point, and wip for latest COW.
Not the best EOW ever but i managed to get rid of the contour, and use more paint like style brushes for these one. Also values are not so bat imo. These picture looks much better after zooming out a lot Need to paint a bit more enviros for sure!

    Pozdrawiam

Thanks vanaga You may be disappointed but these still life is just a half\copy if i can call it like these. Did these for friendly embroidery company. Final effect is much more pixelated so on these stage it looks the best i think.

Darn can't even recollect author name of the oryginal... Poor still life painters sooo underestimated

Latest works: wips of creatures for current COW A. elements + quick girl sketch in gray scales.
