Hey great stuff. I remember seeing a bunch of these in imaginefx. Especially the mermaid one, I remember turning to that and being enthralled at the painterlyness and the story.

Hey folks, thanks for all the comments and dropping by. And I'm glad people are enjoying the IFX articles. It's a weird feeling sending some words and pictures out into the void, so it's nice to hear that people are getting something from them.
halfmonk... glad you got the 'painterly' feel. I'm always working on technique and process and trying to hit the 'feel' i'm searching for, and the pirate imgae is pretty close.
chupacabra... Thanks! I'll drop future IFX stuff into this thread as i do it, so hopefully i can keep improving and keeping you folk interested.
nephilim... 'Chimpski' was originally intended as a comic, but whenever i design a character i like to make them visually appealing. Some screen printed shirts, in a 'soviet stylee' might look pretty good.
sony... Thanks, good you're liking a variety of stuff. That pointed (but round) finger took the most fiddling and frustration on that 'Mars' poster.
Einen... Thank you! The Circus Freako is a concept piece for an ongoing personal project i've been playing with. I'm mad busy for the enxt few months, but maybe i'll get to develop those characters more next year and i'll post 'em here if i do.
Mr.Carney.. Cheers Rob! And thanks for giving me the platform for doing thsi work in the first place!
Extollere... Cheers, and if you wanna rumble, are you in LMS3...?
Mr.Pudding... Ta! That's the dream. Just one character. Once in my life. With a TV show. And those plastic figures. And a plastic lunchbox with matching plastic flask. And i'll be able to buy as many hats as i could ever wish for. *sigh*
stalsby.. Cheers for the composition comment, i spent an age faffing around with the placement of each figure in that pirate picture!!
taeyoungchoi... Thanks! It's funny, lots of people read these tutorials but i'm too embarrassed to let my wife read any of them!!
gustavo desimone... Um..? Cheers! I hink i getr it, but what does 'estilo' mean?
Lorenzo... Thanks Mister. I reckon we've got to meet up at some point. I love your stuff and it'd be good to share a beer and talk about doodling. Maybe something for 2008....
Chuck Mate... Thanks, i've been looking at your stuff recently and really loved your highland bull (great use of form and colour!). I was working on the IFX one at the same time, so didn't feel i could join in that 'competition'.
Erich, Killer Napkins, PyroMania, schlichte ... Thank you!
Art_Addict... Cheers, and good to hear from you! Glad you still like my stuff!
english duke, Circut... Cheers for the comments, and i just wanted to say that i'm not a big believer in 'talent', and more of a believer in practice and application. I'm constantly knocked out by other artists work, and that's what makes me strive to improve my work. I've still got a long way to go, and every day i realise just how much more there is to learn. Sometimes it actually gets me down, and i find i'm too scared to even get started on a piece of work. It's pathetic, but then maybe the harsh self-criticism is the thing that helps us improve as artists.
chobomaster... Cheers, i'm glad you saw it in the magazine, because i think this one looked better on the page than on the screen (sometimes it;s the other way round). ANd i've already mentioned the 'Painterlyness' in the response to halfmonk...
PiercedLogic... Thanks! It's great to hear that you've got all those copies of IFX, particularly as there's so many other artists in them with such fantastic work (and some of my personal favourites from ca, like nicolas and Loic Zimmerman!)
molly... Young lady, you can only dream of my luscious locks. Their is a shine to my noggin that a hairy monkey like you would take years to perfect.
I'll get together some sketches and WiP to stick up here before the end of the week, in case anyone's interested and missed 'em in the magazine.

Blimey! This popped up again from nowhere!
Aaron... Thanks! I'm dead excited about IMC. I've never used oils, so you probably won't want to watch me work! It's gonna be a car crash! But I'll have my laptop next to me as little shiny comfort blanket.
Gak, Okmer, Borilius, harachte and zaorr... Cheers! Thanks for looking and commenting!
Bjorn... Ta! You know I'm a fan of your stuff, especially them gnomes and forest folk. I hope the family are good... We've less than three months until number two 'pops out'!
And just because this thread was dredged up from the back of beyond, I thought I'd add a couple more.
This one's a cover for IFX (Issue 33)... I'mmnot sure it works that well as a 'stand alone' image because of the space left for copy on the cover, but I think it worked OK when it was printed. I was under the kosh with a couple of other big jobs, so this one was done pretty quickly!!
June 10th, 2009 #49
And this one's a workshop on designing characters (or robots in this case) for 'Computer Arts Projects'. I figured I could add it to this thread because both magazines are published by Future Publishing!
I've been pretty quiet online for the last twelve months, and barely had time to participate properly on conceptart. I've been mad busy working on a movie with Aardman Features, and also some book projects. My first picture book will be coming out in August so I'm hoping to post some spreads in the next month or so, for anyone who's interested. I can't show the stuff for Aardman though, until the movie comes out in 2012!!?

I love your stuff, its terrific!
How long did it actually take you to do the girl/dragon cover? I think its awesome and reading your comment about it being done "pretty quickly" makes me wonder just how quickly is "quickly" in your world.
