This is my first COW entry, so please let me know if I'm doing this wrong.
The challenge is really fun. I'll try to follow more COW in the future so maybe one day I'll be able to come up with creature art as beautiful as some long-term followers of COW

Concept: Refined Gem: Feathered Desert Runner by JakkaS

This creature lives on frigid northern deserts. It almost never stops moving except when they feed. There are rumors that they run even in their sleep. When threatened, however, they tend to become aggressive rather than evasive. Their clawed feet make them formidable foes for any predators.

I've always marveled at the simple wisdom of this creature. I often stop to watch it charging headfirst into the future, its eyes wild with joy. Truly, no other soul in this world can leave fears and doubts behind quite so fast.

Concept: Refined Gem:Crustacean Shark Eater #60 after mysticaldonkey1

The Crustacean Shark Eater lives in the deep sea where it looks above to spot the sillouhette of it's favorite prey. This crustacean predator feeds entirely on shark and it uses stored calcium deposits to form razor sharp teeth that regenerate much like fingernails. The shark eater spots its victim and races towards the surface catching the shark by surprise in its trap like claws. With the shark in it's grasp the crustacean predator is free do dine at it's leisure or devour the prey in one or two large bites.

It's been a long time... work isn't really admitting me to do these challenges anymore, but I'm tired of that. So here you go, and hopefully they keep coming! It's a much needed investment of time, since doing any challenge boosts your skills!

    Artist: Piru

Concept: Arbraticus Ptolemaus after Giant Tree Eater #87 designed by Moai

The Arbraticus Ptolemaus is a long extinct dinosaur. Little is know aobut it. The only thing that's certain about this creature is that it was "built" to devour trees.
The long neck and it's 6 (presumably) extremely fast working stomaches prove this. Thanks to it's very heavy bone structure in the lower body it is able to sustain the weight of the neck, which is calculated to be able to hold a small chestnut trunk.

Concept: Feathered Desert Runner #2 created by Longshao
She has trained them in the art of running in this dangerous environment as best her instinct would allow. She nervously scans the horizon, always ready to bolt as her offspring wrestle in the hot sand unaware that their most difficult trial is about to come. In this harsh place, it is definitely survival of the fittest, and the fastest.

Thanks to Longshao for the awesome inspiration.

Ohh my first finished piece for COW!

    Note: Description will follow!

    Artist: Rist

Concept: Purple Tentacle Creature created by archipelago

The Archipelago hops from one coastal rock to the next, always searching for his next grub. The way he captures his grub is quite simple, he tongue lashes it, sticking the grub to his slimy sticky stretchy tongue. Just life a frog, this creature has strong hops, but with the ability to move at great speeds in order to race the waves back to shore.

Sometimes, just sometimes, he would stare at the fly, just stare, not move a muscle...or whatever he is made out of. And then...he would tipple over with cramp.

He dwells within a cave that was once a hole that a child made while on holiday. Sometimes, just sometimes, a crab kicks him out, taking the hole for himself.

Sadly the Archipelago is made for camouflage at night, as a nocturnal creature. However our Archipelago is afraid of the dark and insist on staying awake during the day and sleeping at night. This cause much head ache, well aches all over, as he is in plain sight for predictors, and these creatures are vicious!

    Poor Archipelago!

    Artist: Grenogs
    Concept: Feathered Desert Runner

Due to these strange desert creatures only just being discovered by western civilisation, they haven't even got a proper name for them, but the local tribes living out here in this waistland call them simply LEGS, They are highly carnivourous and often become scavengerous and even canibalistic due to the harshness of the terrain they live in. Legs can often be seen running around in large swarms during the summer, at their breeding season. Only the females have a feathered crest on they head, the males are totaly bald, this being the only obvious difference between them. Often the female can be seen running hours on end, being chased by the 30-40 males in pursuit.

Crunch...crunch....a loud, slow chewing sound can be heard in the valley in the Fall. The Giant Tree Eater peacefully eats tons of bark and leaves to gain weight before curling into hibernation for Winter...but it will be back next year

Concept: Bilemaw, Plague Dragon 035 by peter_john

Bilemaws are a foul species of dragon that some believe to be responsible for virulent outbreaks of plague. They exude an awful nauseating smell from their mouths and through vents along their necks. Usually the stink may signal the arrival of a bilemaw to the wary. While unpleasant, breathing the stench given off from a bilemaw isn't lethal. The real danger of dealing with bilemaws results from their foul dripping mouths. While flying overhead cities and villages their jaws will drip infectious gobs of offal, literally causing a rain of plague. Anyone unfortunate enough to be bitten by a bilemaw and escape will soon find their body rife with infection. Any attempt by the victim to seek refuge and relief among their friends and family will sadly result in the spread of the plague.

Concept: Feathered Desert Runner 060 by Lander

The Feathertail is as harmless as it may sound if you have someone to save you. Residing in blistering, mountain deserts, Feathertails use their tail to block the sun to remain cool. Their tail also plays a vital part to balance it's massive body when grazing the plains for food. Their total absence of teeth forces them to swallow their prey in one bite, or rather it would be one mouth full.
Locals have found much sport in the Feathertail by luring them with tasty treats, including themselves. It's a test of endurance, and bravery. The one who runs the greatest distance is the winner. They usually pray on everything that can fit between their jaws. And when a competitor is consumed, the Event Organizer tranquilizes the beast and the sportsman gets rescued by being yanked out the same way he came in. The massive amount of drool makes a body suit a necessity and a fashion statement.

Concept: Red Face, Arctic firehead #14 by James Wolf

They are seldom seen, but some of the braver (or more boastful) hunters tell stories about their encounters with the red face. They tell of times when blizzards caught them in the ice fields, and when they believed they would never see their kin again, a scarlet-glowing apparition would loom up out of the white gale and lead them back to their own hearths. Some however claim that these mysterious saviours, which are also reverenced as a totem beast and reincarnation of the elders, act on strange whims and will take a man in whose heart they see a sin of some kind to the wastes of the far north and beyond the aurora, where the spirits of the damned dwell.

This swamp dwelling mammoth, sometimes called the Teslaphant, has large, conductive, tusk-like appendages it can smack together creating powerful sparks and arcs of electricity. Flower Patterned Jungle Lurker

    Artist: LORD M

Concept: Flower Patterned Jungle Lurker - Coma corollarixemplum
The Flower Patterned Jungle Lurker is a predator that lives in the tree tops of in the deep jungle. Being a creature that looks like something that it is a mixture between a feline and primate and which have the size of a large panther is a sight that's quite intimidating for any who see it.
The Flower Patterned Jungle Lurker is a member of the Stalker family,Coma , and like its relatives it is higly aggressive.
The males have harems consisting of several females and a large territory - which it ferociously defends to the death against any rival that tries to take it from him. This is the main reason why the males have such horrendus scars on its leatherlike and hard forehead.
The male and female have are pretty similair looking, except for that the male is a bit larger then the female and have higly decorated fur and a long tail to impress the ladies and show that he's strong and healthy. Since the male mostly defends the territory against any rivals the females mostly stands for the hunting and caring ofthe pups they have a descrete grey coloured fur - this to more easily blend into the shadows of the jungle. Like its name suggest, they lurk around and stalks it prey until they see when they can surprise the prey.
Anyone who dares to enter the deepest parts of the jungle will surely walk into the territory of the Jungle Lurker male and will brutaly be torn asunder when discovered. Even if the chanses of surviving a Jungle Lurker attack is slim, pochers often tries to kill the male for its beautifull patterned pelt, which will be sold for a extremely high price on the market and often is worn by kings and nobilities. This is something many pochers have tried to do and most have died trying. Even if they succeed to kill the male, the females will still be around since they always attack in group - which is even more deadly then the males attacks.
The flower patterned jungle lurker is often told about in old folk lores as a nobel creature, a king of the jungle, that rules the jungle with a gentle but strict fist. If one gives a sacrifice outside the jungle for the Jungle Lurker, he can cut wood from the trees. If one doesn't and still cut wood, he will face the wrath of the jungle lurker and become devoured. Old folk beliefs also says that where a Jungle Lurker lurks, it will create a pattern of white flowers on the very place it walked. These flowers are said to be medicinal herbs that can cure any dicease. Thereby the creature got the name Flower Patterned Jungle Lurker.

Concept: Deslicornius Glaciaris - One Horned Glacier Slider by Hiuki

The Deslicornius are lonely creatures that live in the arctic archipelago, when winter comes the female deslicornius migrates to warmer lands in the south to give birth.
Although they're excellent swimmers, they prefer to slide on the glaciers to cross the sea.

    Concept: Giant Tree Eater

These majestic beasts love tearing down trees. They eat quite a big portion of the branches it breaks of from the tree, but for the main part they just love tearing down trees. Because of its ferocious and manical pursuit destroying anything remotely treelike most of their habitat is usualy quickly ridden of larger and smaller trees. The bigger the tree, the greater the challenge for the Giant tree eater. And they happily accept the challenge.

Whoohoo! I'm the first to choose! It's initially a tie between Nightblue, EricT and peter_john, but of the three only Nightblue tackled another guy's creature so he gets the kudos and my vote for that. Really like the fur on that one btw.

Great round, guys! You have made some fine pieces, which I thought I should comment on - giving you my humble opinions.

Nightblue - I really like the movement in this piece, it looks fast and kinda like a photo taken of a horse - but instead of a horse it's something else.
The fur looks really nice, almost shining in, what I suppose, the sunlight. The dust also gave it a feeling of it running.
One thing that I almost immeaditly imagined when I saw your creature, was that it would be perfect if a human rider sat on top of it.

Great motion drawing! I have nothing to complain on!

Goog - I like the way it looks like an amphibian, wet and shiny after just coming up from the water.
A bit more detail on the creature and the background wouldn't have hurt.

VegasMike - This is really cool! I love the scene you made, actionpacked! Great details on it, the crustacean shell looks superb and old, like a crustacean that have lived for a long time. Great piece!

Main Loop - Nice use of colours, but in my humble opinion it kinda looks unfinished. A bit more detail wouldnt have hurt, and maybe if you had given the ground a rock texture it would have looked much cooler.

Piru - It looks happy! Nice use of colours and I like the way it's posed, kinda looks like it's happy because it's running towards dinner. Really nice!

metalpiss - I love this one! The choise of colours you used and your shading are both great! I like the detail on hw you can see the veins through the wingmembrane. This is my favourite and I voted for it.

scorge - Nice scene with the kids playing. Kinda gives warmth to the creature. I also like how you placed those two predators in the background. Great tanned skin you gave them.

Rist - It reminds me of a book cover for some childrens book somehow. The face you gave it is really great looking.

grenogs - Great piece. With the skintexture you almost made it look like a predatory lemon. Awesome!

EricT - Love the look of this, this one also reminds me of a childrens book. You made it look just like the thumbnail, thumbs up for that. This is one of my favorites.

peter_john - Great piece, you made it look more vicious then the thumbnail. The gob dripping from its mouth looks like something you wouldn't like to have on your clothes. Great lightning and shadows. Maybe a bit more details wouldn't have hurt.

Lander - I love the way it runs after the guy. Great shading. Really funny description for it, made me smile.

walnut - I like the pose and the description for it.This kinda looks a bit unfinished, more detail on the fur and head would have made it much better.

Peg - I really like your interpetation of Jakkas golden lantern bug. The pose is cool, looks almost like it's howling. Nice colours and shading. One of my favos.

Michael Jaecks - Great details! I love the skin you made on it, great shading as well.

markeshi - I love this one! It looks so happy, so joyous! Like it's having the time of its life playing in the snow.
A bit more details, like on the fur wouldn't have hurt, in my humble opinion.

Lenorekitty - Looks really ferocious. Nice traditional drawing.

insubstantial - Awesome drawing! The details in your drawings are many - which I like.

Supervlieg - Nice skin you gave it, I like the wrinkles all over its face. The pose is also really nice. I like the vegetation in your piece, the tree and bushes. Also the mountain background is nice

BlkCelebration - Great light and shadows, I like how you made the skin all reptile-like.

Damn I use a lo of smilies. I would greatly appriciate if someone would comment on my little something.

Nightblue: Great job, and a very believeable creature design. I like the slight change you made on the more powerfull legs. The fur is really well done, I like how you kept everything relatively simple and to the point. Works for me, and you got my vote for it.

Goog: Nicely done. I see some perspective issues though, and it doesnt look like he could actually lean on those front paws.

VegasMike: Excellent job, as usual. I love the dynamic image and it really comes together. Perhaps the creature comes across a bit too cartoony when compared to the shark, making the shark steal a bit of his thunder.

Main Loop: Nice job on the detailing of the creature. It would have been a slightly bit better if you had some sharper details in the highlighted areas. But this pic works for me anyway.

Piru: I love your choice of creature! I like the impression of speed you put in the picture. You could have pushed his behind a bit further by adding some dust clouds in front of it.

metalpiss: Nice color palette and great highlights. Maybe it would have been even more dramatic if part of his face was lit as well.

scorge: Nice colors, but perhaps a bit on the satured side. Maybe adding some footsteps in the sand would add a bit more to the story.

Rist: Nice job. Overall maybe it could use some stronger contrast for the shadows. And since the texture of the stone is very good, it wouldnt hurt to put a little more texture on the body of the creature.

grenogs: I like the expression you put on this creature. Maybe some wrinkels and bumps in the head would emphasize this even more.

EricT: I like how you sticked with the style. Overall I would say a little more shading would bring it a bit more to live.

peter_john: Nice job. I think it needs some stronger shadows on the body to make it a bit less flat. I also have a bit of trouble reading the background.

Lander: Nice and very dynamic pic. I think some stronger blue hues would work really well and put a little more focus on the creature.

walnut: Nice job overall, but I think you could have taken it a little bit further if you dont mind me saying so. Try to add a focal point, and add some stronger values and details in that part. Right the creature doesnt have a strong focal point.

Peg: Overall nicely done. It looks a bit like its falling to the right or left though. It could have been intesting to see more of that lantarn, its not really clear how it works now.

Michael Jaecks: Holy Scaly textures batman! Nice job on the detailing. The colors work really well, especially in the lit areas. The pose is a bit stiff. Try to loosen it up a bit, maybe by checking out some elephants in motion.

LORD M: Nice work on the fur. The creatures in the background look a bit like very small creatures instead of being farther away. Try to add some atmospheric perspective by painting over them in a color from the background on a low opacity. Same goes for the flowers trailing of into the distance.

markeshi: Nice pose, very dynamic. I like the snow blowing from its back. The horn and some other parts look a bit flat, maybe some dramatic shadows could fix this.

Lenorekitty: Lovely style. The pose works really well. However I would like to have seen a pose that shows of a bit more of the backside of the animals.

insubstantial: Overall great picture, but I think it would benefit from having a bit more light in the scene. The moon in the back would have been a great lightsource to light up some parts of the forest and creature. That way you would be able to lead the eye of the beholder a bit more.

BlkCelebration: I like the texture on the neck parts. Im not sure what the other parts of the creature are supposed to be. Are they covered in feathers of scales? Some parts look very feathery which is very nice. You could add some loose feathers to show of the ferocity of the flapping wings.

I'd have to vote for Nightblue, they did a really goood job of taking control of other person's concept

i thought it was cool, though, how two different people chose Moai's Giant Tree Eater and they still turned out fairly different

Lander-you did i really awesole job too, i like yours a lot
PeterJohn-your monster was great and i liked your style. it reminds me of ARthur Rackham a little bit

I have to say that I'm not a pro and have no education or other knowledge to fall back on when I comment. So it's nothing but my personal view and can be ignored totally if you disagree.

Nightblue: You totally stole my heart the first time I looked at it. I really like the bold brush strokes. I can see the creature running with three eyes shut
    My vote belongs to you.

Goog: I think the mouth would have come out better if viewed more form the side. Also add some inside to it's mouth. I really like the skin. nice folds and wrinkles.

VegasMike: I've had problems with open water ever since I saw Jaws. This didn't make it much better. Really like the textures.

Main Loop: Totally like the feeling. I like the loose feeling of your brushwork.

Piru: Looks like it's moving rally fast without moving (full of grace) It makes it look big.

metalpiss: This I like. It makes King Kong look lite a toy. Nice touch with the beak.

scorge: I like your strong colors. Nice balance to the pose.

Rist: You fleshed it out really nicely with the tentacles on it's head. Maybe you lost the red eye a bit.

grenogs: good looking dry atmosphere It's still a bit flat. I think you could work more on bringing out the volume of the flesh. That is one slimy tongue.

EricT: Cool to see how you envisioned your creature. I dig the style

peter_john: I think the strong colors work really well. I have a hard time painting like you cos I'm afraid of strong colors.

walnut: Great to be able to communicate a feeling through the pose and not so much through the eyes. I would have liked to see some more details. But still as always a great.

Peg: When I look at the original thumbnail I read six legs. I also think you could have had some more highlights to enhance the volume. I really like your minimalistic style on the head to communicate the design. I'm inspired and will have to give your technique a shot.

Michael Jaecks: I really like this one. But it feels a bit stiff. Also it's floating a bit on it's hind legs. Very powerful. Nice rendering of details.

LORD M: Totally awesome fur. By making the trees towards the back lighter would probably help to convey the sense of depth. Next critter of mine will have to wear a coat of fur so that I may train on getting as good as you. Thanks for the comment. I'm glad it made you smile. Totally made my day.

markeshi: I would have liked you to have offset the legs somewhat to make it less stiff. But lots of motion and great snow and fur. Especially the snow on it's back.

Lenorekitty: This I dig. Totally awesome pose and emotion. They really communicate.

insubstantial: This is a jewel. At first I had a really hard time seeing what it was. Then it made me shiver. Well done.

Supervlieg: I totally like your style. Nice pose and details where needed. Thanks for the comment on my creature. I can see your point. I'll try to make a update on it and see if I can make it pop.

BlkCelebration: That is great. I really like the volume and paintstyle.
