    Layer Problems???

I cant do anything to transparent layers except paste onto them. The fill tool won't work and no matter what brush I use, I cant seem to paint on them. I've been through all the settings I can find, and nothing changes, and up until recently, I didn't have a problem...

No!... Maybe..... Look, that was six weeks ago.

I'm curious about what you mean by "except paste onto them". In Corel Painter, we can't paste anything on to a Layer, though we can copy and paste a Layer.

    In any case....

There's a bug in Painter X and X.1 and I think also in Painter IX and IX.5 that causes the Preserve Transparency box to be unchecked (appear to be disabled) when it actually is enabled. That means all transparent areas of any Layers are protected and we can't paint, draw, or apply Effects menu options to those Layers.

    The solution:

Go to the Layers palette and in the upper left corner, click in the Preserve Transparency box until you see a check mark. Then click one more time to uncheck the box and disable Preserve Transparency.

You'll need to do this for each Painter session, maybe for each new image in a Painter session, so try to remember to disable Preserve Transparency using this method unless you want it enabled.

I meant copy and paste, I did not mean to confuse...

And that is exactly the problem it seems, thank you very much

    Hi,

Happy to help. Fortunately, there's a quick and easy solution even if it is an annoying bug.

    Cheers!

Wow.. Sorry to bump this thread but I was having the same problem and it was driving me nuts.

Jin you are a lifesaver. Very resourceful.

Has this bug been resolved? If not, anybody know why not?

I was lucky enough to google it and of course it pinged CA.org.

Thanks again. I was pulling my hair out.

    Hi Spades,

    You're welcome.

This bug remains in the Painter X.1 Update so if the Corel Painter developers have fixed it, we won't see the fix unless there's another Update or until the next Painter version.

It's a minor bug so other things may take priority. Even if it is quite annoying, the workaround is easy and quick, which can't be said for all bugs.

Before pulling your hair out, check here and on the Corel Painter X newsgroup. That's the quickest way to find out if something is a bug and if it is, the solution.
