    Chow 97:: Hippie Joe

    Chow 97:: Hippie Joe

    ROUND #97

    HIPPIE JOE
    -------------
    Primary Character
    Across the field from Farmer Thickets' Crop Circle farm is the local recycle, run by a friend of Thicket's, Hippie Joe. Nam vet (he was a corpsman), and ex-emergency room doctor in the inner city, Joe lives a quiet life recycling the local recyclables and pontificating upon the world's woes.
    A little more than slightly reactionary, he is now the local peace activist, animal rights activist, aniti-war activist, Global Warming activist, Pro-Choice activist, and, just activist in general. Anal about what goes where in recycling (plastics are *never* mixed with glass, which is also, by the way separated into brown, green, and clear) cardboard goes over behind the dumpster but aluminum can go *in* so long as it's not tinfoil. All recyclables must be washed clean of food products.
    And he's strict vegetarian. Eggs are okay, because they're "cackleberries."
    Long reddish brown hair, tie dye shirt, torn jeans and a Jesus beard with beads, he's Hippie Joe.

    Sounds weird, too. The perfect neighbor for Thicket. One question though. I doubt the deadline in November 11 or did I miss thomething? Might it be Nov 18, or 19?

    I'm sorry 'bout the stupid question, but what's a "tie die shirt"?

    No, you're correct - deadline is the 18th, and the shirt is tie dye - sorry about that. I should know better than to try to pull these things together when I'm dead on my feet.

    *ANY* variation on this type of shirt: http://www.tiedyes.com/teeshirtimage...ie-dye-tee.jpg

    corpsman seems to be the military term for a medic (military too) or an ambulance man.

    Essentially correct. A Corpsman is a Navy Medic. The USMC uses the Navy's medics because they don't have medics of their own, so it is not uncommon for a Navy medic to see ground combat.

    Hmm. not sure how much concepting there is to be done on this one. The description is pretty tight and stereotypical. Bit like that Farmer one. A more lose brief may have been more inspiring.

    More inspiring, maybe. But I see these topics as a very good exercise in doing something a client might want you to do, which is not essentially the same as you would want to do reading only a brief title.
    I think it's actually a very good exercise that we have to nail down an already described haracter instead of creating our own. (which is also a lot of fun, of course)

    if anything, if this was an actual brief, its still pretty open, theres no mention to age, or size of character, he doesnt have to be in a particuler pose, and as for scene, theres no constraints to the shape of the image, or whether or not there is to be some kind of scene or background added. These tighter projects are probably better for the imagination, becouse everyone wants to create something that's not so obviouse a cliche'

    first chow

    alright, first chow submission, this was certainly an interesting character. i found it pretty hard to work the whole concept without a detailed background.

    ok, update, added some color changed the pose a little

    bangalore-monkey: good start (way to be first and welcome to CHOW!) I don't mind the detailed background, but watch your proportions, etc. I understand wanting to be cartoony, but this may be a little too off. The barrels, the poles, structures in the background, even Joe all seem to be listing to the left, while other elements like the sign and the house slope to the right. Curve them all to a similar degree, or even them all up, I think. And he looks like he's an after thought hiding there behind the barrel. If he's the star, don't stick him behind other elements, let's see all the crazy hippie glory. Keep going, this one has lots of potetntal... paint the hell out of it.

    just a quick wip so far, i think i got the pose sorted out, wanted to give that over relaxed feel to him, to much lsd during nam, basicly that traditional american hippy style cliche'. colours are roughly right, though still need to work a lot more on head, expression, colour, etc.. not sure how im going to paint this, just discovered xsoft pastel, which im quite liking, Also not sure if to add some kind of background,

    wade, dont be put off how other images look here. If you want to improve the only real way is to practice and places like chow are perfect, becouse everyone here gets to crit each other, so your almost guarenteed to learn something new each time you enter, Also another factor here is concept, although the rules ask for good quality work, concept and design is also a major priority, so even if your not the greatest of artist, you may still have some cracking ideas, which are just as valuable. So enter, you have nothing to loose.

    WIP. I don't know if this will ever get colored. I'm trying to focus on learning better lighting so my entries may be b/w for a little while.

    Bangalore_monkey: XD Is that farmer Thicket getting abducted next door in the bg?! THAT'S HILARIOUS XD!!! Oh god.

    ACRO: I like the bins, but it's probably not a necessary element to the picture. It depends on how much you want to focus on him physically or who he is personality-wise. I know you're still working on the face but his eyes aren't matching up right now, you may wanna do a quick fix on that.

    Grenogs: Looking good! Don't forget his beard and tie-dyed shirt

    Jska: Looove his face and hair!!

    mrbo18: Definitely love the lighting. I hope you find time to translate it into color.

    Carotello: You and I are such bad people, we both heard hippie and thought "WEED!" XD
