Zeroe's Wicked Sketchbook Adventure
Yes, the time has come for me to better myself. Strive to become better at all things he does art or artlike, be it drawing, sketch, painting, collage or whatever it is my fragile little mind comes up with I shall post here, if they are not good enough for the Finally Finished forum that is, ahem. I hope I can get as much help and input from you guys as I can! Really want to improve and advance! Oh dear, I was talking about myself in third person again
By keeping a sketchbook I hope to motivate myself to do more work every day, and to hopefully entertain many peers granted anyone looks
I can't guarantee not literally blowing your mind when you look at my work but you never know. Yes, I'm funny.
Right, as this thread moves along I plan to write a little about myself and my inspirations aswell as info about my current projects and some about my working methods.
Enough waffle! On with the evening...
Bring on the C&C!
The painting is some prep work I did for a project in School. i think it reflects my current method of work quite well....dark ink lines with flowing water colors...
Right, these first drawings are some character designs for a university project about a little girl in a pink stripy tshirt that performs a different action in each page. This is a children's book themed illustration. We all got given one action for her to illustrate, I got 'directed the movie'. I started off with some sketches and ended up with a character that i'm pretty happy with. I went with the cute baggy look and this is the finished version I came up with...let me know what you think of the design!

Here's a drawing I was working on for a while. Now, I haven't really ever tried drawing in this kind of style and method, so it was also intended as a drawing exercise. I did enjoy it though, was a nice diversion from more usual working methods of mine but perhaps I'll do more in this direction from now on too. Anyways, the drawing is from a photo of a chinese lantern shop which I really liked, but I think i've gotten bored of it and leave it as it is now.

Started work on the finished piece, gna draw each bit and then piece it together on the computer! Here we have the girl sitting in a director's chair.
I think this could turn out pretty good.

More work in progress!
Added the Camera, shadows and a megaphone.
Still gna add a spotlight, a filmreel spilling all over and the text!
Also added another sketch of mine I did recently....better keep practicing!

The megaphone one has a really nice delicate style to it - good choices of colours. Keep it up!

Do you have any ideas what I should do for as a frame, if anything at all? I'm kinda lost there...
Anyways, here's the latest! Almost finished!
November 11th, 2007 #7
Just added a few little bits but I think im finished!
I'm quite happy with this actually! Not really like anything i've ever done before, but I liked it, might do more in this direction again.
November 12th, 2007 #8
Pretty much finished, just added the odd thing or two and changed some stuff around!
Let me know what you think, readability and composition wise and whether or not you like it!
I think I did ok seeing this was my first Children's Book style image really...
Edit: Replaced the image with the final one, removed some of the color....Quite happy with the text and image actually!

Just thought I'd share this poster design I did for University! Had to be themed in a 'Britpop' direction.

I love the dark lined/watercolor work. I love watercolor so I'm biased lol. Keep it up. That's a cute character as well, has potential.

Hey, stylish sketchbook you've started up here. You've definitely got a good eye for design and the watercolor look on some of them is a nice touch. I'm digging your latest post here, lots of interesting things going on (is that a panda I spy in the bottom right corner?) really makes me have to take a second look to catch the small things.
Great job, so keep those posts coming.

Thanks for your comments guys, I quite like making posters and designs like that one...you can jsut go nuts in photoshop and every once in a while something sweet comes out the other end...
Anyways, here's some more sketching and messing around. I really need to plan my stuff out more. Also...if the previous poster would be on a shirt...that's what it would look like.
Sometimes I feel my stuff is too illustrationy and graphic design like to be on here...:/. Maybe it's just me.

Now here's something random. Just got this crazy idea about a pear shaped character called Derrick Humphries that gets into unfortunate situations and always utter a single different word of frustration. I plan to make each frame more and more complicated as it goes along...
November 14th, 2007 #16
Hi, very nice start to a sb. I especially like the lantern maker's workshop and the characters. Nice job on the t-shirt designs. Although there is some slight anatomical and perspective problems with the three devils, their balance is nice and clean.

Right, now that I vowed that I would operate this thread in a more 'blog like' fashion, I shall numb your brain with some crumbs of information about these latest drawing. Til now I've always just posted them without much of an explanation...how sad, so from now on I shall write about them too. Perhaps it'll even help me keep track of things!
Write so here some notes I took on these alleged Humphries drawings:
-> Swear Words, Cursing
-> Unfortunate Situations, Funny
-> Increasingly elaborate
- character actions
- amount of characters
Derrick Humphries is a good hearted anti-hero. Always getting himself into increasingly unlucky and even more important implausible situations...only to escape unharmed to be cast into the next mishap. His constant on companions on his journey are his trusted tie Trevor and the friendly speech bubble Ralf.
Possible Character Traits
Trever the Tie:
-> Pessimistic, kind, easily scared, rambles about a holiday to spain he once had
Ralf the Speech Bubble:
-> Cynical, manipulative, deceitful, compulsive
weird? I think so...
Also, thanks for the comments guys! Straight sketches it you want, then straight sketches you shall have, here's a selection of more recent stuff;
November 15th, 2007 #19
Ah yes, and while i'm at it why not share this 300 inspired drawing I did a while back. The manliness....can you feel it?
November 15th, 2007 #20
Right so here's some more of Derrick's unfortunate adventures.
Right, I thought that every piece could have a theme and that the situation he is in corresponds to that scene.
For example, the theme for this one is Light. And the picture has him in an interregotation room with a lamp....yes very literal. But it leaves room for experimentation later on.
Other themes could be:
love, dark, solace, break away etc.
if you wanna suggest some themes pls do so!

Ah yes...and here's 'Love"

Nice stuff you've got here.
It took me alot of thinking to try and find something helpful to say to you.
You've got alot of good expressive lines in your work, but I'd like to see if you do any complex shading work.
Most of all I'd like to see you use different mediums. You do great digital works and the way you use color makes me wonder if you might like to use paint or water color.
November 15th, 2007 #24
Wow guys, im overwhelmed by the positive response im getting here...and I be liking it .
Anyways...yes more traditional stuff...I shall see what I can deliver for you.
In the meantime here's a drawing I did for a friend of mine, I'll do a more elaborate one for her soon.

New stuff for the masses!
Our new univesity project that i'm working on now is about a Poem by Kurt Schwitters called "Once upon a Time there was a tiny Mouse". We were supposed to do some research onto the historical context of the poem (World War 2, Holocaust, etc) and then turn it into a black and white drawing for a mature audience.
Anyways, I have done some designs for the mouse, And I want to know from u guys which one you think is best so I can go ahead in making the rest of the image in that style!
Also included is a page from my super rough book....with super rough crap drawings!!! woo!
I love using acyrlics and watercolors. I'll post some of the work I did in that area shortly! Thanks for the interest and kind words!

Zeroe's Sketchbook and his Wacky Illustration Journey...
Right, more work on the Poem project.
I added some more things to it. But the chair is just a placeholder...its shameless photoshop manipulation. It is wrong to plagiarize kids! Need to draw a nice chair myself. Also need to work on the woman the cat and mouse are supposed to be eating...yep.
