    Self Improvement project

Welcome to my sketchbook thread. I intend to update on a regular basis. My goal is basically to improve my illustration ability by learning anatomy, perspective and color. Any suggestions for further education and critiques will be highly welcome as I find them to be most useful and shall be ever grateful.
    So it begins.

    stuff looks good man.
one thing is that i think the legs are a little short on the skeletons. now might not be so because some ppl have short legs and whatnot.
but my teacher always tells us that a general rule of thumb is the foot to the pelvic arch should be about the same as from the top of the head to the pelvic arch.
now obviously all ppl will not meet this exactly because no one has perfect proportions so yeah...
    stuff looks good though!

Took a break from my study schedule to try and put my acquired knowledge to use. I wanted to draw a fantasy picture and came up with this. Took me about a week and a half on my free time.

    Hey Hell,
So great to find some who is learning art by himself.here is some comment i hope that will be useful for you.
Don't waste your time to draw a picture that contains a lot of detail and you have to work on it for a week.(your last post is nice, but i think you can draw better stuff to learn more).right now,you should focus on learning your subject(it can be character,environment,etc.).for example if you want to illustrate characters in future, you should learn figure drawing, anatomy, foreshortening, shading etc.and it takes a big time to learn these stuffs.
I think it's better to take a figure drawing book to learn to draw the figure itself.then learn anatomy, perspective, etc.
I hope these comments were helpful for you.
    Hey,your shading is pro.

    Need your critique

TheGnoll- Thanks a lot! I definitely need to grind more anatomy. The symbol is called Abraxas which is a gnostic symbol. It signifies God and the Devil in one entity. The name adds up to 365 which is a significant number to Gnostics. I'll try to post a link to a larger version of the fantasy work later.

Darkwebslinger- Thank you for encouraging me. It means a lot to me.

Here's a sketch referenced from anatomy for artists book-

I was at my mother's place on the weekend and found a sweet book with Velasquez prints. Here is a study on the face of the water salesman.

I learned a lot about my habitual mistakes by trying to accurately reproduce the face and still it seems I made the cranium too thin. His head looks a little compressed. Overall it was an encouraging experience as it kind of looks like the original.

Drew a self portrait as I've heard it's a good exercise. I'll do a few more in the coming week.

    ...and a skeleton from Loomis.

    Excelsior.

edit: Weird. I tried to erase some other file and these got zapped instead. I'll try to re-instate them later.
edit2: OK, I put them back.

You're getting there man, i can already see much potential on your portraits, and your studies look nice.

Try to study a little bit more the anatomy of the face, specially the basics of the eye placement, i believe with just some adjustments your faces will look top quality!

    Keep it up man!

    Back From The Dead

Wow. I feel really crappy at how things turned out. Last time I posted here, shortly thereafter I lost my Job where I worked as a tattoo artist and from there I went to be a book salesman, a telemarketer, a clerc and finally I scored a really sweet job as a game tester. I got fired last week because of the 'conomy. Feeling terrible about the zilch progress I made in this time. Most probably I slipped back quite a bit. Anyhow, without crying about it too much I'm getting back on the horse. I started educating myself in the use of computer graphic programs. Right now I have on my plate Flash and Painter (probably get into some illustrator and photoshop and then some ZBrush and 3dsmax). I also want to get ahead in traditional skills so if any you guys have suggestions I'll take 'em. First here's a couple of really lame attempts in Flash and Painter (haven't gotten round to animation and the more advanced stuff in there).
    Flash:

    Painter

I guess my intention is to start being able to make money out of drawing. If any of y'all have advice how to go about doing that it'll be cool. I also put up a lame website you can check out:
    http://sites.google.com/site/sixroundsproject/Home

I'll try update here more often than every 12 months. Hopefully I'll have the determination to keep it up.

    Here's a couple o' things I haven't posted before:

    A new entry!

    Hello dedicated readers.
I pretty much covered the basic Flash tutorials. Here's a couple of basic animations I made:
A greeting card for my girl:
    http://www.megaswf.com/view/9d0a68ae...d441b4da5.html
    A basic walk cycle:
    http://www.megaswf.com/view/5321de37...a9771082d.html

Next up on my Flash to do list is a couple of looping animations that can serve some web site purpose- like having some hover animations and such.

Before that, I made this Image with a very basic knowledge in Photoshop (hopefully I'll be that much better after watching the course). It's meant to serve as a background to some text that can go in the middle there:

BUT BEFORE I GET INTO THAT( I mean before I watch the Photoshop course but not before I do the animation loops) I'm going through the ILLUSTRATOR course. And here's an image I made with the basic tools I acquired so far.

If any of y'all have anything to say about anything. Feel free to.
I guess the purpose of my current software studies are to become more employable and more comfortably so. I'm especially interested in homework type exercises that will help me learn to do things outside my comfort zone. I'm giving them to myself in the meantime.

    Until next time!

    Edit: P.S.
Thanks for the reply there Dstrax, hopefully you'll enjoy this post as well...

    Another Update

    Hello Folks,
    New update.
NEWSFLASH, read all about it!!!! EXCITEMENT!

Right. So...um... Here's the stuff I've been working on since last time.
    A flash animation loop-
    Here's a preview image:

Maybe I can improve on it some more like adding sounds for the things happening in there.

Here's another Illustrator Image I finished today as an experiment in working with lines:

I think it has some potential.

    In conclusion: need more practice.
I got a couple of physical sketches I'd like you to see I'll upload them at a later date.

Here's a question: This Illustrator lines technique, could be used to make a whole illustration including background and stuff, would that be a good thing? Is the product something that will promote me professionally as an illustrator. I guess I'll have to try it out before I can know the answer to that. Do you think adding color to it is of any worth?

    New sketch for the morning

Hello faithful readers. A new sketch with the tablet and photoshop. I've been doing these following having read somewhere about constraining the opacity of the brush to the pressure of the pen. It's quite a nifty tool for sketching but I don't entirely know yet what to do after that, like with the coloring and flattening planes and such. How do some of you do it? I tried with a new layer to lay down colors with a color or overlay blending mode. Those seem like promising starts

    Illustrator Image

Hello again dear readers. Here is a new image. Trying out some things in Illustrator. I used a template layer to work directly with my reference.
Background's a bit tacky, please try not to scratch your eyeballs.
