    Silent Hill Origins concepts, etc...

Hello - been a while since I last posted here in the FF section...Actually this is only the 2nd time.
These are some of the environments I did for this Silent Hill psp game that just came out. Its been 2 years since I did these...game took forever to come out!
And to tell you the truth, I'm not even sure it looks like anything like how it started...

    Photoshop/painter/photo/texture...you name its in there...except 3d

More stuff on my blog - part photo, part concept.

thanks for looking and crits very welcome

The plane you did has a really interesting design to it, i really want to pick up the game now to see where all that fits into the story...rahh damn you

You have an amazing gift of making each and every one of these pictures seem like a freeze-frame of a so-scary-I-shit-myself movie.

    Brilliant work!

Really nice work! I think that the transformation between the hotel room is absolutely gushing with creativity- I love the nooks in the side of the wall, and how they're so traditionally Silent Hill in the "defiled" version- caged off, rusted.

Are you a fan of the original games, and did you feel intimidated when approached with the work? Just curious. : ) Hope to see more!

The silent hill gear really gives off that air of crazy~scary~little~girl~about~to~rip~your~face~off ~and~sew~it~back~on~again~freakishness, sweet.

The two ghost church images are absolutely beautiful the first one looks like you painted an entire church and ripped it apart from there, wonderful stuff.

You have done one of my favorite series justice! I played Origins at E for All for a little bit, I'm curious to see how it all works into the main plot but I was very impressed with the environments and feel to the game. Makes me not regret buying a PSP

Nice job on the mark of Samael and the 2nd and 3rd interiors, so very gritty and surreal.

Nice, my teacher was a modeler and texture artists for one of the first silent hunter games. He told me about this great website called Opacity.us. I'm sure you heard about it but just in case anybody else who doesn't know, its a great place for inspiration.

Nice work! I am big fan of the series. I really like the second environment the best, the gritty warehouse room with bloodsmears is a really nice effect. I second the request for bigger versions so we can see more detail!

thanks guys - so went back to enlarge the images upon request..and added 2 more.

Robin - yes it was probably my best gig so far!
Dominus, Sony, Chuba - thanks guys!
Sirio - yeah delapitated buildings...mmmmmmmmm. I grew up in Beirut in the 80s...so you see, they hold a special place in my heart
Bhanu - If I told you, I'd have to kill you and the rest of the crew here
Davi - hehehe, the planes are from another project, so are the ghostchurches...but planes in SH, now that would be interesting.
Mad Patty & Borillius - thanks!
Sway West - Actually I'm not a gamer but I knew enough about it so was really excited to hear I'd be workin on it. I love the atmosphere of this world. It is the definition of creepy and I hope I have translated that in the pieces. And yes It was initimidating at first. After I did the first pass of the concepts which were musch looser, I was told they wanted to use them as loading screens so I actually went back to clean them quite a bit... not sure if they stayed with that plan as again, the project went though some changes...
Young Paddy -I had so much fun on that church and yes, I did actually loosely paint the space and cut into it...and I think the energy (hopefully) shows through the piece.
    Steph- that made my day!
    Stalsby - thanks and done!
Cubesolfard - You nailed it - we were lookin at that site too...one of my favorites.
Chiko - actually that's a hotel lobby and you can see the original undefiled version on my blog. Yeah the images were really small at first
Charles - thank you very much!

Great stuff. That second environment is mesmerising me in a way I don't think I like. Reminiscent of some of Max Ernst's more disturbing work.

One minor crit would be I think there's too much random texture, and by extension, tone in places (specifically the second, third and fourth paintings) To me, it would be best to allow these areas to settle into a subtler, less varied treatment, to better describe the form.

Hiya, just saw this post and thought you might like some news on the project. These enironments were mostly used as inspiration for the overhaul this project had. Particularly the first image and the butcher area. All the monsters were redesigned where possible.
The fourth image of Alessa on the steps is a very strong image- it was made into a cutscene and reproduced for the japanese box art
I like how you use the wire supports to hang the furniture. In the end the archetypal 'metal and blood' silent hill dark stylisation was altered for key areas in the game. For example, the sanitarium dark areas were described as dank and rotting (like the urban exploration photos on opacity) The theatre was meant to be more organic and prehistoric whilst also drawing dark inference from the shakespeare play there.

I'm truly in love with these peices, and being a big silent hill fan, you've given us everything we could ask for. Any possible process shots? I'm highly interested.

    Bjorn - thank you
Pete- very good crit - yes I did seem to get carried away with the textures...
Plantman - hey thanks for that update! Very interesting - are you from Climax UK? I hope they used the latest version of that piece for the box art - cause an earlier version was sent out a while ago to some sites...they did that with alot of pieces for an early sneak peak..so some were still "unfinshed"...
Skeiff - wow thank you man. I hear you SH fans are hard to please so that means a lot. As far as process shots, I'm afraid I just have the final versions now but again, there are earlier versions of these floating on the web PS - nice sketchbook btw!
Matt - well - that means I really did my job!

I'm a HUGE fan of Silent Hill and have always been impressed by the visceral, textural atmosphere of the games and the artwork. You've done well to continue that pattern with your scratchy, detailed concepts. If there's anything that stands out to me, it's the little patches of light filtering in from the holes in the tattered curtain, as if to give us a little glimpse of some hope of an outside world full of light..but one we'll never be able to return to again.

Great concepts and great work. Now if only I had a PSP so I can play Origins
