    Smeg Head's weazly sketchbook

I've been lurking on this forum for years now, never had the courage to post anything I've done...ever.

Ehm, where to begin, i'm 18 - From Scotland and currently want to do art until my dying days, alas I'm about to begin a Uni course in computing but still, hope to encorporate the two if I can

I'm really just starting out right now, and these next few drawings are some of my first, well...I'll show you my first from 3 years ago and then a few days ago...picking up the pencil to draw my second...and third

So here is the very first hand I properly tried to draw back when I was 15 -

    Smeg Head's weazly sketchbook

To my knowledge I never drew another one until a few nights ago - 3 years later.

    This one -

    Smeg Head's weazly sketchbook

Now that's the hands - Onto the dreaded faces...I cannot draw heads / anatomy to save myself but I gave it a shot since I was happy with the hands.

    Some angry guy :p

    Smeg Head's weazly sketchbook

Those are the most recent things i've done...others i'm fairly proud of dating back to my early teens would be this guy.

    Smeg Head's weazly sketchbook

And this that I never finished.

    Smeg Head's weazly sketchbook

Anyway, I think that's enough for now..I do have a few more but I'm not sure about showing them

Ehm, so yea...point of the thread, just critic the hell out of them and give me pointers please please please

Getting a Wacom tablet for my Chrismas so I can move onto using OpenCanvas or Photoshop

    *Gets drawing*

Hmm, hope this works (edit)- Yay, it does!

    Hey there! Welcome to CA!

Good studies, the second hand is great. Keep working on those heads/faces, and post some more so we can give ze good feedbacks

If you're going to tell people the truth, make them laugh, otherwise they'll kill you.

    Will do

It's uhh, 2am right now. But what the heck, i've been staring a blank sheet of paper on my desk for hours now listening to music, might aswell draw something.

Thanks for the comment on the hands, I like drawing them as well...it's the only part of my anatomy I can look at without getting funny looks from my family.

Wonder I should jump back to basics and work on anatomy or not? -

I never did any art studies at school, not sure if it's at a loss or not - But I think I lack practice with the simplest of shapes since I was never given any mentoring or guidance apart from that of my big brother who did 3 years at art College.

Anyway, enough blabbing - Pencil at the ready!

Edit:- Might aswell do a dump of all my sketches that I can find before drawing so you can chew over them.

Small update - Done very little and still practicing these formidable hands ><

Just gonna keep going with them until I'm happy (Which should be never )

Really need to find a better surface to shade on...I keep hitting little bumps on my current ehm, slab of wood I use to mount the paper onto.

Right - I'm going back to basics.

Got my hands on the loomis books, which I will use as a bible for skilling up as much as I can.

Just started an hour or so ago, will plop up all my progress.

Well i've been rather busy the last few days so i've done utterly no drawing lately, got some time last night before promptly snuggling up in bed.

And by time I mean like 20 mins ><

Promise to do more now that i've got a few days off

Hey all - Got my hands on an old...and I mean really old tiny A5 tablet and had a 30 minute whizz with it.

PC crashed half way though...so I took a photo of it and tried to save what I could...

FYI - This is the first time i've actually used a tablet ><

    moin moin,
welcome man. if youre on loomis, your first step is done i think (im currently doing this too ^^, even if the style is oldfashioned).

i like the way your fantasy goes wild.
now to my hopefully helpful advice: get the big structures, before you lay eye on the details. if the basic structure isnt right, the nicest details wont rescue your drawing/painting. so dont do the second step before the first.

Hey, thanks for the advice - Much appreciated

I'm a total git for doing what you just mentioned...no matter what it is - hands...faces...fantasy things, even after i've sketched it out and the sketch looks pants...I can't help myself but shade it in and try and save it.

    P.S - You've got a great SB ^^

Been really busy so I've only had time to do one bit of hand practice over the last few days...

Thumbs really do screw me over

Did attempt this one with proportions in mind.

You know... your username that references Red Dwarf is one of the reasons I viewed this thread.

You have an excellent understanding of hands. ^_^

You said there was a picture of a hand in the first few posts somewhere that you were going to work on later. I say leave it. It looks really good as is. That's just my opinion though.

Woke up this morning...unable to feel my feet - Could see my breath in the air and well, I was fucking freezing!

Lone and behold last night everything had frozen over, everything.

Not entirely sure what the temp outside was but it was below freezing that's for sure...was foggy aswell, not the greatest driving conditions.

Well, amidst my moring routine of feeding the pet walrus and conquering a small nation...I took a few pictures of what it was like outside (and still is as I write this).

    Excuses for bad photos:-

It was cold, I was shaking
Camera doesn't really have the best lens
First bunch of photos i've tried to take in a while

And that about covers it :p

I really like that you're having fun and drawing from your head, keep that up it's excellent!

You've got the ability to shade and render, you now need to learn to put the shading in the right places. Try and think things through 3 dimensionally, like those loomis sphere heads. Fingers and boxes etc.

I would recommend doing simple studies of boxes, from life and from your head. Simply draw cubes from various different angles, so you can get the feel for perspective and working into the paper with a 3D mind set. Also, it's never too early to start looking into anatomy.

Most of all, keep it up. Keep drawing, and have fun !

Wow, thanks for the vote of confidence - really appreciate it.

I know, I really should start simple and actually learn how to draw instead of just drawing, or at least a good mixture of both.

I did have a drawing to pop up that I'd done today...but well - I hit close instead of save so it's gone ><

While I'm still er, 'happy' with this i'm utterly livid at my PC.

As I was applauding to myself about finally finishing a peice, OpenCanvas just closed... just closed. I was so close to saving it I literaly had my mouse OVER the save button and it just went "poof" - Gone. So I re-did what I could however in my eyes it'll not be as good ><

    Hey peeps been a while.

Started doing some more but really, most of em are just speedpaints with me practicing and getting to grips with things.

    So, update time.

This is the last thing I've spent any length of time on, not sure what it is...what it's purpose is or what it's going to be, meh.
