Thank you for all the kind words guys!

@ Derra: There's a myriad of ways I usually approach paintings... it depends totally on what I want out of the image. Sometimes I'm inpired by the work of others and just want to try my hand at their style, sometimes it's looser and I don't have a goal, and sometimes I know just what I want. Each of those means I start and plan a painting or design slightly differently. Digitally I guess when it's a full blown illustration, I usually start with a background colour or rough set out of light and dark, so I can ensure all my other colours blend with the overall light colour. Traditionally, it's a much more planned process unless I'm just randomly doodling. It usually involves a couple of rough thumbnails, followed by either a digital or pencil rough, followed by a finished linework, followed by the finished rendering. I work better with lineart for characters and better with solid shapes for environments. But it's probably an entirely personal thing!

Here's a few more pieces done of late.

Bloody hell that Zangarmarsh scene is gorgeous. Outland's got so many beautiful scenes to paint, doesn't it? I love how you put in some of the fauna as well, it makes the piece come to life so much more. And the lighting is so well done, too.

Wonderful stuff in here, especially like your portraits, and that Blizzard piece looks sweet too. Do you ever do oil painting?

    Work of a lunchtime

Hey guys, thank you for all the kind words... my access to this site is limited atm, as my anti virus keeps telling me it has something dodgy going on!

Here's a totally random bunch of stuff... everything from more finished pieces to super fast compositional sketches, to wips. Most of these are done in my lunchtime at work, whic ranges from about 15 minutes of quick sketching to a leisurely 45-50 minutes of painting. Enjoy!

Hello! I've been watching you for quite some time on DA too. You have awesome stuff! I've been browsing through your SB and I intended to leave a critique but the truth is I can't think of anything to say to help you improve. So I leave it at that and just say that I really like your girl head studies from above and also the girl at the blue background has an amazing brush feeling to it, really smooth and free. So well done! Nice environment quickies too!

Hey, thanks so much for your comment. I was able to think about the problem differently and neeearly fix it. Well, not quite, but you added a tool to my arsenal in a way.

I love the portraits in 365/6... you're clearly extremely capable, don't think I can contribute much in the way of useful criticism. I did notice your recent photostudies are a little low contrast, though. Darks too light, lights too dark, and so on. The relationships look right, but overall they're a bit washed out.

I just looked through your sketchbook and thanks for the inspiration! Great to see your progress over the years, as well as your helpful assessments about what took you there. Despite your heavy focus on figures, the rare takes on environments are handsome too. Really like the calm feel and palette on this eastern building and this tropical shore! Some of the new thumbnails also have nice depth and a misty sense of atmosphere. I also love the portrait on the last post!

I love those portraits. You seem to be able to capture personality really well, something that I have really hard time doing.

I also like how versatile your SB is. There's everything from characters to enviros, traditional to digital. Nice!

Hard to come up with any major crits. I guess the enviroments sometimes tend to lack interesting detail and the shapes and forms are bit too sketchy, but I see you're working on that too with the studies. Good job, and looking forward for more.

I'm baffled at the quality of work here. Inspiring. How do you do those micro paintings? What tools to use? It doesn't seem possible... wow.

    AWESOME

Can't believe those heads above are only three hours. They look like they took quite a bit longer.

Thank you all for the kind words!

Kvetch: you definitely have a point with contrast - it's probably the area I know I'm weakest, and am trying to rectify with some of these studies! Helps to have someone poke you for it

Ismo: thanks! And yeah I come from a graphic design background too, so I sometimes have a hard time with getting depth into environments. Definitely something to focus on!

Smuli: np, glad you find it helpful!

Junpei: the miniatures are just done with regular tube acrylic paint on really smooth illustration board, with pretty small, well-kept brushes (hard to paint details when even a couple of hairs are out of whack).

Here's another wip, which I'm having a hard time with as far as the darker tones go... I have a feeling my cintiq maybe a bit too bright :/ Can any of you guys see the details at the bottom of the image (his feet, the suggestion of some feathery looking leg wraps etc)

    And another study!

    Name: clothing.jpg

And finally probably one of the very rare pieces of artwork that has actually been released from my day job as a concept artist for Transformers Universe. One of the first female bots I designed, influenced by the current Prime tv series. She transforms down into a racing bike

@Carnifex: thank you! If you happen by does this one look any better?

@Wholewheat Keyboard: thank you, any commentary is motivating, good or bad!

Here's an update on the elf - after tweaking the calibration of my cintiq, and fiddling with the background. Nothing's set in stone yet, so the shapes and light could change as I play about with it.

And an expression exercise, but mostly through body language. This is actually an exercise I highly recommend to anyone who finds their poses tend toward the static (like my own). It's a great excuse to loosen up with gestures, but really makes you stop and think about the subtleties of what makes a pose just being scared, compared to outright terrified? The original descriptors I took from this meme over on deviantart.
