Nice ref pics William B. Hand. Good lord! Those bull elephant seals sure do have some freakin' big honkin' snouts don't they. Hate to see one with a head cold. You know what they say: big nose, big... Or was that a foot reference. hmm.. anyway.
Ok, I'll shut up and post something soon. I got up too early and already had too much coffee.

This one came out a lot better than I thought it would especially considering that I did it in about 3 minutes, I didn't want to get rusty and just skip todays sketch but I don't have a lot of time right now. I think it came out alright though. I really need to work on poses other than profile and frontal...that's what my plan was for this sketch but time, time, time. Oh well!

is the above image classed as a chimera?
hmmm maybe they're relatives lol... though chimera has a body of a goat i think?

    Mitze
I think we all went the same way.
was going that way, but went with the lion head because elephant seals are just ta ugly for me lol, plus never done a lion head before ...
Anyhoo, great lighting and brush strokes, creature looks good Mitze...

nice entries so far, they all kind of look from the same family tree so far, ashton that is one scarry looking beast.

Really wild looking creatures. Their fantastic.
asaru - Your creature totally dominates the scene. I love his stance and territorial attitude. Nice render.
Mitz - Really great looking composition. The colors and detail are really good and the form of you creature is too.
StorieTeller - Welcome first post. Nice pencil drawing.
berf - Ha! I like your sexy beast. Nice bold effect with those colors and strong contrast.
burrito - I really like the strong line work combined with those bold colors and highlights. Nice looking creature. Let the show begin!
Nice first post Tortis. Great expression with the roaring face on your creature.
senanimach9 - Nice concept sketch for a three minute time frame.
Psychostrat - I like the realistic render beginning to happen with yours. Especially with the details starting to come through with the lion head.
mauser - Great expression on your creature with that roaring and bristling mane.
allometric - Nice comical take on your drawing.
ashton - Strong colors and really dynamic brushwork. That is one wild looking creature.
watereater - I like the form starting to happen with your creature. You've really got a strong bold color foundation. Nice work
dan.man.86 - Sigh, I want to attend that workshop in Seattle so bad.. I've been pining away over the juicy details CA's been posting about it. I was thinking about trying to scrape the funds together but It looks like my son and I are planning to move soon so I'm gonna be strapped for both time and cashy money for awhile. Ho hum for me.. Sounds like it's got the potential to be one heck of an awesome learning experience. Can't wait to see your take on this DSG.

Psychostrat; Nice job on the lion's head. Like the typical rocky beach as well. Lion + seal aren't really 'integrated' it seems, they are separate parts stuck together. Not sure, think thats what Mr. Hand classified as a chimera.
Ashton; Nice concept, good use of colors. There's something funny about your piece though. Fearsome concept, spiked tail, typically scarred (great detail btw) elephant seal chest, and... cute eyes and a happy pose?
Muleskinner; Crazy creature. Like the nose and the general expression. The one on the left seems to be standing more upright. Think you should leave a little more space on the right and top, he seems a little crammed in.
StorieTeller; I really like how you mixed the lion's teeth and lips with the elephant seal's thick, saggy skin. Missing some sense of depth though, back of his body mostly. A simple bg or shadows could help too.
mauser; Good expression. Don't think those manes look like manes though Reminds me of a frilled neck lizard.
Mitze; Nice texturing. Visible difference between separate areas of his skin. Does look hard, actually. Something seems to have gone wrong with his right leg.
watereater; Like the take on the subject. No distinct lion features, but just a more lion-ish build/anatomy. Check on some animal leg anatomy, those legs look very stiff.
allometric; Like your reference to the lion, funny idea. His left leg bothers me a little, and the wavy flag-like end of his staff seems a little unnatural.
senanimach9; Pretty accurate sketch in such a short timespan. Nasty look on his face, shame you couldn't invest more time.
Tortis; Striking resemblance with both creatures. Good job on those pawfins No interaction between him and the water though. (light, color, reflections, etc), think thats the only thing missing. And try avoiding side/front views tho. Welcome to the DSG!
asaru; Like the loose, thin hair, really adds to the wild appearance. Some simple, quality sketchwork on the rocks, skin, and bg. Good representation. Avoid tangent points between the background (cliff, in this case), and the foreground. Like the tail's end, and his left behind leg touching the cliffs edge.
berf; Ooh, traditional media? Results in a nice scruffy look and interesting colors, nice job. Just don't like what you did on those teeth, doesn't seem to match..
burrito; Nice and simple, good expression. Combined the different elements in a funny way. Don't really like the small body, might just be a matter of taste though, just a different take. Think the composition could be better tho.
benu; Welcome! Good stuff, very distinctly lion + elephant seal. Think the expression looks rather passive, considering he's roaring.

Just what comes to mind, hope its of any use to you. Fun round.

Got a bit carried away in sketching and realized I had went for seals rather than elephant seals. Didn't want to start over again at that point. Gotta stay more faithful to the topic next time -.-

The Lion Elephant Seal gets its name from the thick whiskers that shoot out from the base of its neck, vaguely resembling a lion's mane.

Anthis - Cool looking underwater view. Nice scene you've got going on. Thanks for the comment. Lol, I think I put too many wrinkles in my critters snout! It appears to me, now that I look at it, as a mutated variation of the Michelin Man tire guy. The experiment gone way wrong! HAAA!
dan.man.86 - I saw it! Nice cartoon like render. He/she almost looks as if getting ready to say something profound.
Apocalypse_Rex - Wow! Beautiful painting. I think you have a pretty convincing, and ferocious, looking meld going on. very nice.
Jack Frost - Nice sketch. I agree, you've got some nice subtle combinations of both creatures happening.
PogoP - Nice render of your creature. I love the expression on it's face! It's looks like it's thinking, "Uhhhgg, I made it up the beach at last.. now I'm spent."
Nightblue - Your creature looks regal and proud. Nice form.
Brynmor - Subtle creature combination. I like the way you've started to shape your creature with a watery atmospheric effect of your painting.
Hamsta - Good looking creature composition. Nice layout with the mane and tail color balancing out and the way the tail leads back up to the head again.
