    Chow 95 - Squirrel Mage

    Chow 95 - Squirrel Mage

    ROUND #95

    SQUIRREL MAGE
    -------------
This week we break from human or humanoid characters and try a new approach with an animal character.
    -------------
Cedartuft is the female lead in sword and sorcery Middle Grade Reader (ages 8-12) story of high adventure.

Cedarturft also happens to be a squirrel, a mage, and on a quest to save squirrel kind in her world.

She carries a small cedar staff (a stick to us), a gray green cloak, and has various pouches, satchels and tidbits associated with her craft.

Think of this as if it were for a book cover; so leave extra room at the top for a title, and show some action!

More along the lines of "The Secret of N.I.M.H." But with squirrels instead of mice. Its' kind of lame trailer, (the narrative bugs me) but it works:

    That's a really nice animation.
I remember watching a movie with the same characters, but I didn't remember it to be that good looking.

    All jokes aside...

I made a lengthy post with links to Rackham's Alice in Wonderland but I deleted it by accident trying to edit in more attachments. But in there, he had animal characters (particularly the rabbit) that might provide some inspiration to some. It was what came to mind when I read the brief actually. That's about it, off to bed for me...

oh wow, this should bring some interesting images. Also nice practice to the limitations of having to produce a design in a particuler shape and style apart from the design restrictions, its actualy quite open.

one question- Does the 3/4 rule still apply to this?

Hmm.. Those mice are anthropomorphic in that they walk on two legs, talk, wear clothes, use tools etc. The squirrel would be, too, as it carries a staff, wear pouches, and (I presume) would use magic.

I'm not posting this to split hairs, it's just that it's not entirely clear to me what's OK and what isn't. Could you clarify?

Are you perhaps talking about the scale?

Man, the weird stuff you learn while looking for refs..

    http://www.aota.net/forums/showthread.php?t=21513

I'm a little put-out on the specific restrictions placed, but oh well. If my squirrel comes out a bit too weird for the CHOW, well, I still get a painting out of it

And Jake Kobrin, I can't believe you missed the Secret of Nymph movie. That's a universal childhood classic right there. I had to read the book after years of seeing the movie, and it just wasn't the same. The book has so much backstory on the rats, which is cool, but the movie really had a mystic nature to it that I thought the book missed.

    Good luck everybody

A minimum of a 3/4 is always required with CHOW unless otherwise stated

No worries. I'm always happy to clarifiy:

What I'm referring to is stiking an animal head on a fuzzy human body with a squirrel tail. That would be a no-no.

It needs to be identifiably a squirrel, dagnabbit

    Cheers,
    ~Oreg.

I have definitely got to get in on this one seeing as I missed the last two!

Just a quick sketch to help my brain kick into gear... Will probably do a few thumbs, then once I'm happy, watercolours

Crits are always welcomed and encouraged, despite this is simply a thumb sketch.

I'll be taking off her tunic and adding more trinkets to the belt.. also make the staff more impressive and decorated...
Hmm I think I need to get sketching untill I come up with a more balanced pose also.

I know it wasn't intentional, but that made me smile and get to thinking of Greek tree spirits (nymphs) and rutting stags....

Some Rackham! (he is one of my FAVORITE Illustrators...)

Some are a little off topic, but a bunch are animals and the like from the Alice Illustrations. I just adore his linework...

caroline, nice so far, and i know its just a quick rough but be aware, its supose to represent an image for a book cover, so try not to put to much important information on top, as there needs to be some place for the title to be. Also a lot of books also have some sort of text on the bottom of the cover too.

Too funny, great site for reference! Those squirrly squirrels!!!!!

This is going to be fun, I have an 8 year old daughter that will critique me hard - she will either love it or hate it. So I'd better stick to the cute and funny side on this one!

NIMH was one of my favorite movies as a kid! It was only loosely based on the book though, they took the movie in more of a fantasy direction.

Squirrels, huh? .....hmmm, I'll have to think about that...
