My rendition of the Apple Gatherer. I wanted to go with an approach that played off of the subtle and sublime aspect, so he is capable of passing as trusting at first only to show his true, far more dark, colors later. It seemed to fit more with being malicious to me to have him play with his prey a little first.

    93 Final

Yeah, made it to the final on time. Good job everyone and good luck to us all.

The story: This deceitful bogeyman first sets his trap by stealing little children's toys. Do you remember when you was a kid and could have sworn you left you favorite toy by the bedside window, you looked for it and it wasn't there. You eventually find your toy somewhere that it should not be. That was the bogeyman taking it, only to lure you alone and snatch you away. The twilight of morning breaks and you hear a noise that sounds like your toy outside near the apple orchard. Curiosity gets you out of bed and you go to investigate. You find your toy and a nice surprise of candy apples at the base a tree. Bye bye.

A child takes an apple delighting in the treat, crisp and so wonderfully sweet. But soon his eyelids grow heavy and he falls fast asleep. The Apple Gatherer quickly emerges. He ties a kerchief around his neck and is ready to eat!

    Many apologies for my 'poetry'

    Chow 93 Apple gatherer

This time I putted my effort in drawing a concept as near as the brief as i could. Sometimes i really get los trying to draw something spectacular or beautiful...
I tryed to have all the elements in good relation. The apple gatherer is positioned in the shadows to reflect his personality. Although he seems fryendly he's mad, I didn't want to show a monster. I preferred to add elements to feel scary about the character:the duck, the teddy bear and the shoe.

    Hope you like it!

Whoo, first vote goes to me

I voted for Bumskee. The textures make me drool and it fits the "creepy" requirement very well. I could see this being the cause of a few nightmares, easily.

'Cuz life is full of your regrets, and I should be one...

voted for jessibean, i liked the traditional grims tails feeling, similer to hansel and gretel or little red riding hood type stories.

Longwrat: One of the creepiest for me, the no-eyes thing almost always gets me.

Chronoperates, Oregano, and nubeslocas were of other interests as well. The first for the expression and just whole impending calmness of the scene. Oregano, I love the painting job, really eerie particularly of the apples around the next. reminds me of a war prize or something like. Loved nubeslocas coloring, inspires me to try the cell approach myself.

Hopefully I'll have more constructive words for next time. Feels like I'm holding out on something when I don't.

    I voted for

JessiBean because I really like the legs as tree trunks idea, the village in the distance, and just the whole execution. (I see you're in NoVa - I grew up in Springfield and am now just around the beltway in Gaithersburg. )

Oregano because I like the clearly fey nature of the gatherer. I can see why a kid would be fascinated by him and not run until it's too late. The girl I think could be fleshed out more.

Longwrat for the originality and, to quote the Addams family, ooky about him.

Take a look at my series of in-depth critiques, like this one of Salvador Dali's hidden portrait of Lincoln.

Scott's Sketchbook: Check out my sketchbook. Will swap C&Cs.

I think Devious won this one (or should).

The ropey coils of the worm in the arms and legs was brilliant.

Xol's also stood out for me.

Great job everyone! My favorites this week:

Oregano - Love the Froud feel. Great textures. Maybe a touch too much color dodge near the apple? (That crit coming from a color dodge 'tard who just needs to retire the dodge tool all together )

Jessibean - Always original. Always delightful. You rawk.

Bumskee - You make me wanna give up. This piece kicks my ass. Your wallet should say BadMotherFucker.

Edujante - I always love your entries. You live outside the box. 100% awesome.

Thanks for kind comments/votes, etc. scottmcd, nice to meet another local, I'm out near Manassas these days. Love Springfield, awesome Peruvian food. Not so awesome congestion.

I had a helluva time choosing, I am growing to be a huge fan of Chronoperates' rendering, I LOVE Oregano's earth sprite feeling (like others said, very Froud, very well executed) Bumskee is always amazing -- that guy scares me, well played. Longwrat has a GREAT character design, love the viney/twiggy face and head, navarrot has a BEAUTIFUL style and execution (though colors may be a wee bit too happy for this one, it was twilight and spooky... though it does make the dead kid seem more shocking when the image is so happy) MarkWinters, I adore your painting, and I totally dig the fork and knife in his holster. And Fydbac, that is an amazing creature! Wow... Your work makes me want to go nuts with detail, very inspiring. I love JackFrost's tree monster, the way he glows is very inspired, I just think the overall image doesn't live up to his dynamic character and holds him back a little. Entdroid - such a different spin, and so scary for being such a cute creature, I know I would be suckered in. I like the overall feel of this one alot (looks like crayons, which sells the childlike aspect to me) And Monstertree - I liked this one from back in your sketch posting, it's very well rendered. The candles are my favorite part.

    Excellent round.

I voted for Grenogs, Fydboc, Jessibean, and the first guy (can't really read his name there) and Monstertree.

But honestly, Monstertree just wins, hands down. He completely understood the directions.

“It is enough that we set out to mold the motley stuff of life into some form of our own choosing; when we do, the performance is itself the wage.”
    -Learned Hand

"The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science. He to whom the emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause and stand wrapped in awe, is as good as dead; his eyes are closed." ~Albert Einstein
