I love those expression studies. Our brains are really good at reading expressions, and noticing when even something small is wrong with face drawing. Those expressions read really well and I can easily feel each expression. Good job.

Thanks a lot hurman! I do love faces.. and will try and practice drawing that more in the future. I believe that getting an expression right when drawing a character adds a lot of emotion.

Hey Chronberg good to see you being so active, I think the constructive/perspective drawings are great practice and look very solid. Are you drawing them from life or imagination?

Hey Marian! Nice to hear from you. :-)

The perspective stuff is mostly studies from a book called "Sketching the basics" (Koos Eissen and Roselien Steur). I find it has good/concise instruction and lots of eye candy and examples. They also did a (first) book called just "Sketching" which is along the same lines, but with less instruction. I do try to do some own studies to check what I've learned, so it's a mix.

Here are some misc studies from different books.

Your studies are looking good. When you paint, I would use bigger brush strokes to define the form. Right now it looks like you are using tiny brush strokes that lack confidence.

Istmin52, thanks a bunch! Yes, however I do work from big to small but totally agree with your comment. I probably fiddle to much at the end, with a small brush which gives it that spotty look. Just gotta keep on practicing :-) Thanks for commenting and the constructive critique.

Your line quality is really nice, which is something I would like to get better at. Did you do anything inparticular to work on line quality? Or did it just improve naturally with doing a lot of line sketches like you have been doing?

    A few more sketches.

Thank You very much hurman. Appreciated. I do need to practice it a lot more though.

I have been practicing a lot of boring techniques for getting a bit better motor control in my arm, like loads of straight lines, circles, ellipses etc. Did it mostly when going through Scott Robertsons perspective/vehicle videos, which I really like a lot. That probably helped a bit. Then I've been doing quite a bit of Bridgman studies, which are line drawings. I guess just keep practicing various methods and actually trying to nail a certain look will make you better at it over time. Sometimes slowing down a bit can help as well, so it doesn't turn out all sloppy. Speed will probably increase over time I think.

    Thanks Marian! :-)

I stumbled upon them when searching for face expressions. The photographer's name is Mike Larremore and I contacted him for permission to use them for practice.
    He generously agreed!

    A figure study.
