So here's my rendition of the Miner's Daughter. I had quite a bit of fun with this one, great topic.
the miners daughter:
raised by a poor miner in a tiny industrial village, over the years she has seen the mine producing less and less coal, and the people of her village getting poorer and more hungry. she had three brothers, all killed in mining accidents.
she has set of into the wider world, to see what other trades are available for a girl who can swing a hammer and wield a wrench with the best of them.
Hard work in the mine, only for a strong miners

The miner's daughter...With a new job.
I really am not submitting mine, just really showing it, as it isn't finished at all, and it's more an illustration than a character portrait. This was the image I saw in my head though, when I read the description, and I had to go with it, even though I didn't have the werewithal to finish it.
She's got her Dad's old shirt on
What I would love some feedback on, is HOW do you guys come up with all the cool /stuff/ they wear and have on? That's SUCH a weakness I have, I can't come up with "STUFF". Or the stuff I do come up with is REALLY plain and boring. How do you all do it?
“It is enough that we set out to mold the motley stuff of life into some form of our own choosing; when we do, the performance is itself the wage.”
"The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science. He to whom the emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause and stand wrapped in awe, is as good as dead; his eyes are closed." ~Albert Einstein
It was a sad night, as they said goodbye to the only family they had. With tears in her eyes, she pretended to be as emotionally strong as she was physically...but the truth was, she wasn't.
"Be who you are and say what you feel, because those that mind don't matter and those that matter don't mind."-Dr. Seuss
After her brothers died in mine-related accidents her father insisted that his daughter stay out of the mines and become a clock-maker like her mother. But even in this small town, clockwork-powered machines are being replaced by coal and steam-powered machines and her family will starve if she obliges her father.
So she hasn't touched a mine in years but she's run off to the nearest mining town, convinced that enough honest labor will bring happiness and prosperity. She's wrong of course.

'Cuz life is full of your regrets, and I should be one...
Hey guys..here's my entry
Here's my final. I would have liked to rendered her more, but unfortunately I'm out of time to work on it today. I had a lot of fun with this one and think I learned a few things from the process.

Lucy's shift is over. Her eyes hurt. She waits for the other miners to come to the elevator. When they'll be up, it will be night. She hasn't seen the sun for 2 weeks. When she was little, she'd never thought she'd end uplike her father, working in the coal mines. Now, The dream of doing something different has faded far, far away.
"The reason why truth is so much stranger than fiction is that there is no requirement for it to be consistent."-Mark Twain
She still thinks about her brothers every day. They were the ones that understood her, made her feel like she was a part of something, like she bellonged.
Her father had never been the same since they died in the mines all those years ago, there was nothing for her there anymore...
She had a new life now, working in the daylight, junking anything going... she wasnt happy... but it was starting to help her forget.
Always strive for perfection. You will never achieve it, but will learn so much more in the striving.
My english sucks, sorry
i hope i made it in time..........., damn, i didn't really satisfied with the result....
Ok .. here is my Version of The Miner´s Daugther
really running out of time for a better description, but anyway here is it.
A expert in mining and explosives
Everyone in the Underworld knew her,
about her skills... how she learned them, who teach them to her ...
thats why she is called
The Miner´s Daugther
Leaving is the inspiration of this character, alone in the big city with out family or friends. But she has a strong personal resolve and fortitude from her life in a miner's family.

careful, if you click on the sketch book link while you are viewing my ca sketchbook you might get stuck in a causality loop
Some really great work - pretty tired, wish I had more time...
Working with explosives was the only thing left at the mine that she could even stand, and now even that wasn't enough. She tried to stay on and fill the void left by the accident and the loss of her brothers, but the time had come where she had to leave.
The Miner's daughter on a break from her traveling, prepares for a possible fight by readying the refurbished tool of a late older brother of hers.

Not 12AM everywhere is it?
My first CHOW Entry....
Had stacks of fun with this, despite the great competition! Also looked up what 'Steampunk' was, found it quiet interesting
Mixed media with this... Watercolour sketched, then pencils, more watercolour, added some inks (then had smeary fun with a damp brush while the ink was still wet) then finished off with pastel I think I threw a bit of everything in here and there is watercolour splashes everywhere XD Ahh good times!
She had arrived in the city to find work, and found herself in an alien environment, with snickers and stares from the strange, brightly clothed people surrounding, she realizes that this is very far from the mining village she left behind...

With the tragedy that took the sons and shut the mine, the family was relying on Bev's smarts. She tooks the tools and her uncanny nose for a tin vein she'd picked up from her brothers, and put them to task...
Bev, The Miners Daughter.
too...many...<cough, hack> photoshop filters... <gasp>... must.. have.. excuses.... <gurgle>
Amounts of coal were deminishing every year. Taking the strength from years of hard work in the mines, she had to head to the nearest town for a job. It wasnt the best job, but it made the family some money.
