Two characters in one image Doesn't have to be set in any period, so they could be brought up to date, not necessarily the obvious! Just be inventive, this is about a relationship between two people, so really the expression and attitude are important as much as the design.

    1. Two characters (one male, one female)
    2. Give them them personality

Read the general rules, at least 3/4 is always required in CHOW

Sweet topic, Im going to give this a go. But without my laptop and personal space, we'll see if I get anywhere good

What exactly is a moll? I've never heard that word before.

    A gangster/gangstas girl...

    MOLL

Can be a modern expression though, so it doesn't have to be from the era of classic American gangsters.

Ashton - I tried to peek at some of your other work to get a sense of your style, which I see is very... stylized (for lack of a better word), and that may also be part of what's holding you back in CHOWs. Maybe consider the anatomy more carefully, since it's easier to de-construct something that is right than to build something that isn't. Do you have a reference for that pose? Because right now your figures look like cube people where it'd be better to see more of real people in them (this is easiest to achieve by looking at real people).

    Ie: Attachment 211759

Also, the woman's right hand (to the viewer's left) is backwards.

    Hope that helps some!

So I've been doodling... more to come soonish.

Are we able to take characters from history, like Bonny and Clyde ? or is it have to be purely fiction?

So this round is to do a gangster couple from any time period or genre, focusing more on the personality of the characters than the actual designs?

I'm having a hard time figuring out whether or not you are looking for evil, gangster characters, or if it is the "behind every bad guy is a woman who really runs things" that we are focusing on and the gangster relationship to his moll is just some sort of frame of reference.

So I guess my question is, 1. do these characters need to be some form of gangster, and 2 are they supposed to be evil (or at least anti establishment)

    Sorry for being so slow.

Grenogs - A Bonnie and Clyde 'type', yes.

Chance - You had it in the first sentence. Concentrate on the whole thing! A 'bad' couple. Design is of course important, but the essence of character is personality, and rather than just thinking a cool outfit will carry the design, look at expression and how they might interact. Having the woman as a dominant character is to give her more than a supporting role as a bit of 'fluff'! He's the boss... or maybe not... And yes, at least anti-establishment. It's more open than first you might think.

    EDIT:

Timothee - We've done almost the same pose! Great stuff starting to come through... phew...

Here's mine. Gangsta and his molly dolly. Rough on the left. I have no idea how to finish this off though... Going to try a different colouring process I think, but time is a problem again this week, so it may not get finished.

CHOW#91 - Guest Host: Poshspice Topic: The Gangster and his Moll

Sadly I don't have any more time to spare on this, just as well as my experiment wasn't working anyway! But here's the WIP...

I'll probably be able to check the thread on Sunday night/Monday morning and for those who 'finish', if Jessi Bean isn't the only one, I'll be back with crits.

Work in progress, Can I even do something like this or am I suposed to go mafia only? I don't want to dedicate anymore to this painting if I need to go mafia. C&C is always appreciated.

    edit:
Playing with another Idea. Not sure how I want to present the intercation. Still waiting to see if the charchters have to be mafia type or just some form of criminals male female.

Will Eisner did a brilliant splash page for a spirit comic based on the male female interaction. It was the first thing that popped into my mind when I read the topic.

edit: Reworked the idea some in a diffrent direction. Kind of pushed the time frame fowards and backwards. Don't know if i'll get away with a future/past Asian organized crime thing, but it's fun a fun Idea to play with.

I am new to this and had a couple of questions.

Is there leeway on like a sci-fi aspect, or superhero thing?

    Or what about pose?

Like a man and a woman fighting aka:

CHOW#91 - Guest Host: Poshspice Topic: The Gangster and his Moll

or are you looking for more standard art where you can read costumes better - or??

ManaBurn - You meet the male/female char requirement, and I dig the clothing design, but the gangster feel is lost, you're right. What makes this couple evil/dangerous/gangster? Consider that and see if you can change the environment/lighting, posing to demonstrate how they're bullying or going on a crime spree, etc.

Sometimes the cliche can work, if you give it the right spin. I say give it a go just to see.

also if your going traditional, think about your character, they dont have to be your typical italian mafia type, try other nations, like russian, jamaican, arab, indian, even eskimo. theres a gangster everywhere, you just need open the box a little

I hope not in the literal sense, though, as this was the first thing I thought of: A twisted boy-king and the further twisted queen regent. I didn't know just how many of these women ruled kingdoms behind their sons until I read the history of "The Chess Queen". These were hard ass gals, man. So.... I instantly thought of them when I heard this topic.

Poshspice, is this okay, or am I stretching it? :/

(ignore the quality of my sketch, I just did it during class to get the idea down on paper)

I was just wondering, are additional side-characters to make the scene more interesting allowed, like so:

daestwen - I think you're on the right track, so long as you keep in mind they're up to no good and they're a pair. Push a little more the mischief they're up to? So that they're not just well dressed mean people, but racketeers of some sort. (maybe emphasize how the boy is a terrible, greedy king, etc.) LOVE the expressions.

Manaburn - No prob, Hope I helped, and can't wait to see what you come up with.

JessiBean - I think I know what you mean, but this is the part I'm not so sure how to pull off. I've changed it a little bit since... the boy's arm is up towards his chin, and he's got a gold dubloon between his fingers, and a sword in his other hand, laying lazily off the chair, but I'm not sure that it's strong enough? I think the way to do it is to try to build up the rest of the scene, so... I dunno.
