    water based clay

    hey guys im going to start sculpting some character busts and would lik eto work in water based clay (its cheap and you get a lot of it). only thing is ive never really worked in waterbased clay are there any good tutorials out there for me to read. i will be firing this piece as well so i need to know about that too. thanks in advance. any advice will be greatly appreciated.

    Just make sure to keep it moist and covered when you aren't working on it and hollow it out before you fire it or things will get messy. Other wise I think its pretty straight forward.

    Also stay away from thin edges with water clay cause they'll dry much faster and crack. If you're in the usa or uk you could try WED clay, it's water clay but dries much slower then regular clay.
    Make sure you cover it up good and seal it tight after you're done for the day.

    If you're making small character busts don't use an armature like you would with sculpey or an oil based clay, cause as the water clay dries it shrinks and will crack around the armature, a strong wire in your base will add enough support for a bust and you can slide it off when you're done to let it dry completely.
