    peaceful elfe in super sculpey

A new sculpture I made this week. It's not finished yet, I still have some details to make and also her feet and some clothes.
I spent around 15 hours for this result and 3 for the head, It was hard to make a peaceful and happy expression on her face.

    Wow

That is sweet! I almost didn't believe it came from that ugly lump in the second picture!

Splendid piece! I think you did great on the form and facial details. If you don't mind, I'd like to give a few pointers. You could try defining her hair some more by drawing in lines for individual strands (with a needle tool). Also, her fingers on her right hand seems to be oddly bent. Other than that I can't really find much else to crit...excellent work.

Did you use a hand armature, or just sculpt them from a lump of unsupportes sculpey?

    Thanks for the comments,
The hands look a bit weird, I didn't use an armature for that. it just comes from a flat piece of clay. I'm not skilled enough to have good looking hands but I'll try to use an armature next time.

I have never done hands with an armature, but I've seen some good results with them. It just seems like a lot of work...

Honestly, I didn't even realize the hands were wacky until it was mentioned. I was distracted by... other points of interest.

    Great expression, btw.

very nice. the face is a little heavy for an elf though, i would thin her out and streamline her. pointy-er nose, pointy-er chin

I think the drapery is a little too low on her thighs... there's nothing to hold it up right now!

But, I have no other observations. This is an excellent piece, excellent work!

I really love the expression on her face. I don't know if "peaceful" is the adjective I'd use to describe it, but I like it. It makes me think of happiness - like somebody who's just really happy to be alive. I imagine her on a day with sunshowers, enjoying the sun and the feel of rain drops on her face and hands...

Anyway, keep up the awesome work.

    Unhappy

I've started to sculpt just for fun on my own. I've never been to a college to learn. I think internet is full of good exemples, photos, and can give lot of inspiration.
jlamarche, you're right the adjective happyness is better to describe this elfe.

Adelaide is running out of super sculpey, it's a bit frustrating these days...

Unfortunately, there are very few art programs in colleges that will let you spend a significant part of your time doing figurative, representational art (at least in the US). There are a few good programs out there, but the vast majority of art schools and art departments want you to make things out of hubcaps... I think they grade you by seeing if anybody "gets" what you are trying to say with your art, and if they do, you get marked down...

I've almost finished a sort of classical dancer. I need to work on some details like hands and skin before going for another piece.
First time I focus on the muscles. I have still a lot of work to have something realistic but I feel more confortable than the first piece I did. This one is number 6.

    Smile

    Thanks a lot Nicole
Here's a new small candle holder I've started few days ago. I wanted to make an african girl holding a small candle. I'm not sure it will end up as an african girl as I have some trouble with the face.
anyway, have a first look. this is still the very basic shape of the body at this stage.
