I'll be honest... I don't even see a stalk on your apple. Seems to me like you're rushing the sketch stage. You have some skill in the painting department, but your forms aren't reading mainly because the shapes weren't well thought out from the get-go.

In terms of the painting, you need darker shadows and you should consider using a slightly higher saturation in one area - BUT NOT TOO MUCH.

    thanks heaps for the crit
yeah i completely agree i think i did rush the sketch and didnt emphasize the apples perspective properly which is why it looks funny + there wasnt a stalk but i meant the holey dip thing that it goes into lol?? dont know what its called.
i will try to sponge the advice in
    thanks again

    I like the glass effect!
But the tulip bloom is imho too large and looks oddly shaped, alas the bloom is not plastic at all. Try to play with shadows and maybe even exaggerate them. I don't know how much truth it is, but they should contain some additional blue inside.

Also, the place where stalk goes into bloom looks like you didn't observe enough. I guess that there are more details and it's wrongly placed.

Mainly because of the glass-part of your painting, I'm looking forward to see more, keep painting. Sadly that's the only way how to improve *smiles*

Thanks for the tips Jonish! Very helpful critiques. I admit that I just couldnt get the bloom looking right and got really into trying to nail the vase. I guess it shows since that is what your liking about the picture.

    Take care.

    Onion!

It's a Vegatable, but finally, this is my first effort
I used only hard edge brushes.

    Digital Painting In PS #2

    Digital Painting In PS #2
colours picked aren't so bad. Should block in with a solid brush in future

    Digital Painting In PS #2
ok, I don't know what I was thinking here. I think I started and wasn't really into it. Turned into a mush so took a break. Only about 20mins up to now of tearing hair.

    Digital Painting In PS #2
Came back, threw some new colours in there, added some detail

    Digital Painting In PS #2
brought the form shadow back, more detail, starting to think more about edges (where not to blend, where to blend and how much).

    Digital Painting In PS #2
added alot more detail, added new colours observed (probably due to sitting here for a while now of time).

    Digital Painting In PS #2
refined detail, nailed some edges etc.

Overall around 3 hours maybe more First attempt at a fully rendered realism paint in Photoshop. A lot of detail has been left out (top and bottom of onion) and it looks a little oily for my liking. I stopped and posted because I need some crit before I do another so that I can be faster and more efficient.

EDIT: resized the 'working' images. Hope the final is ok as is. It is the full size of the painting.

I FINALLY forced myself to do this exercise and I think I learned a thing or two.
Of course I forgot to save steps but luckily I make step-layers from time to time.. if that makes sense.

My first ever attempt at painting within photoshop, however I left it a little too late on in the day. After about an hour my lightings changed too much in order to remain similar, thus posting what I shall continue on with tomorrow. And thanks for the inspiration to try!

    Hello everyone!

Somebody in my sketchbook thread advised me to paint some fruits to practice rendering, and then I remembered there was a thread that had just this.

Here's a 3 hour study (with photo reference provided at the end) of an apple. I did not use the colour sampler as a means to practice my perception of colour. I realized the colours ended up being off mid-way, but I made the best of it and continued. This is all done using the basic round brush.

Tell me what you think of it as I'm here to improve. Feel free to comment on my sketchbook as well (link provided on signature)

EDIT: I spent an extra 20 minutes to blend some parts of the apple. I thought it might make it look less like it was cel-shaded. Any thoughts?
