So i came across this thread way late - through seeing bumskee's gallery in FF - absolutely love your style and ability, and was thrilled to find this thread. i had been very inspired and i wanted to try this exercise. and doing it makes me want to try many more exercise. so enlightening...

Ive checked out this whole thread, ever letter, up to page 22 but it just kept going - almost 3 years now, damn.

so here is what i came up with - sketch was so basic it wasnt worth posting

step 1 - basic fill in

    step 2 - blending n stuff?

step 2a - more blending (heh)

    final detail

@gamerhomie Yes man that looks really stunning! the colors are brilliant really nice natural paint strokes

CarlSpringer - Get yourself a tablet and draw! That's all there really is to it..you have to experiment; and browsing cA in the process helped me in finding near-future goals.

Mordin - your first attempt was pretty soft mordin, the second one got more solid. i think you're on the right path, just draw another one and see how much better you'll do this time!
and remember to study your reference, don't guess what you should put there, really look at your ref; and try doing a pre-sketch, make a 'battle plan

nyje - i took the liberty of working a bit over your drawing, and not doing a to great job either. hope you don't mind
i'm not the best in the world, and i hope i know what i'm talking about xD

i liked the fact that you gave your apple a fitting background, and took into consideration values, desaturated light with saturated shadow, even a bit of reflection
still, 'd like to point out a few things

first off, perspective. if you would draw the whole handkerchief, you would see the perspective issues more clear.

you did well with the values of the apple, but you forgot the consider the surface; depending on the light source,
you'd have a brighter highlight on both object and surface it's standing on; so if you have a desaturated highlight on the apple,
you should have a more desaturated, less bright surface too,
and considering the angle of the apple (how much table frame you added)i think this is how it should have really looked:

ok, then if we'd move on to shadow construction, taking into consideration your reflection and shadow:

and a messy reflection block in:

i mostly imagined how it should look but you see,
the apple reflects a bit from it's colour on the surface in either directions,
it is a bit more saturated in the penumbra, and depending on your strokes you give it mass

take a look at the peer project vol. 2 for more help
this is also included in the peer project, but i wanted to point them out: edges!

hope i helped in any way

nyje - happy to hear that! and i am looking forward to see your new apple!
i'd also recommend that you open a sketch book and add it to your sig; it's basically what you need to really get yourself started here on cA

differentreality - you have a really nice apple! your sense of value and edges seems pretty good.
now all that you really need is more practice!
    it does not matter that you got impatient and didn't draw all the little details, all the dots on the apple;
you are not trying to copy the image, but make art, draw an object, and your personal style is characterized,
and recognised through the details that you choose to draw

It's been a while since i drew one of these..
    SO! Here's an apple!

Nice thread here folks! It has been a long time since I did a still life study and this was fun. I need to keep doing more now that I've started. Hope it is okay that this was done using Painter and PS together. If not, I'll remove this one to a more suitable thread!

Here is my next study. I have these two ceramic Salt & Pepper holders which fit together in a "hugging" way. One is White and the other is Black. First I am doing the White on a White background, (see below) then Black on Black. After, I'll probably mix them in a hugging type pose to see what sort of contrasts I get. Quite fun and remarkable how much colour there is when you would think White on White would mean a lot of White and not much else!

*edit* I know the BG is not White as expected, (more Turquoise really) but I like it anyway.

    Thanks for the thread!
Here are two still life I did. An apple and a bronze swan.
Forgot to save the steps of my apple. They both need a background...

Edit: Added a background for the swan... Well sort of. I'm too lazy to add the details

    such nice apples in here
It's been little over a year since I started here and this was my first learning thread after I bought my first wacom tablet. I wanted to thank Min(Bumskee) for his contribution and inspiration.

I thought it would be interesting to post my latest life study and show my progress since a year ago, done in about 3.5 hours with only round brush and natural lighting from the window.

Wow, I'm very late to this party but here's one of my attempts regardless. I'm happy with what I learned from it but I still think my painting is looking pretty flat, maybe I need to push my darks/lights a bit more, I'm not sure.

Took about 1hr and was a second attempt, not easy. Anyway, I am semi-pleased with the result.

    Pic 01 - Blocking in
    Pic 02 - Blending
    Pic 03 - Details
Pic 04 - Adjusted Saturation (cheater!)

    Anyway feedback is very welcome.
