    First painting from life...

I'm still pretty new to all this stuff, but I'm encouraged by the feedback and such here. I didn't have time to finish this last night (time is limited due to various reasons) but hope to finish/refine it tonight.

In any case, here's the initial sketch and the rough blocking. C&C are definitely welcome, though I don't know if asking for that is premature at this stage or not... I've owned a wacom for quite a while, but haven't done a lot of painting type stuff with it, and never sat something on my desk and tried to draw/paint it/match the colors, etc -- so it's a bit overwhelming, but I'm going to give it my best shot. I just hope the apple holds up

    Initial sketch:

Swatches and initial blocking (arrows denote ones I'm actually using in the sketch, other ones indicate various attempts at getting a specific color):

    Thanks...

Off to a good start ascent, I do notice however, in your blocking you have a lighter green next to your shadow and darker colors facing your light source, that maybe something totally different from what I'm seeing, can't wait to see your finished product.

go for a wider range of values with your palette. if that's really what you're seeing try to get more dramatic lighting on the apple. other than that off to a good start! finish up

ya, throw in some light red for modeling detail, maybe brown for your darker side of the apple, and yellow as a lighted side, whilst keeping green as your base. Don't limit yourself to monochromatic, it just ends up being a challenge.

Grenapples: Hmm thats a clever little trick with the stylus...I forgot you can program that middle button, Ill give that a shot when my new wacom comes in. Great onion post BTW =)
Trashy:That apple has a nice balance of control and expression...I really like the style, you should keep that consistent! Nice color scheme as well.

Thanks for the feedback, guys... I think I'm still struggling with painting what I see vs painting what I think it should look like... I'm reading a neat book called Drawing By Seeing that talks about that... Also, I think in the initial color sketch, I hadn't really been taking value into account -- I was focused more on the basic colors that seemed to be there.. Taking your feedback(s) into account, I tried to expand and revise the colors. I also started blending a little and got a little bit into the detail (on the stem) which I know is getting ahead of myself, but just couldn't resist :-/

In any case, my time to draw has come to an end for the evening (again, much too quick) and so I'm posting where I'm at. I hope the apple holds out long enough for me to finish! It's tough to find "drawing time" when you've got a fulltime day job, toddler and a very pregnant wife

Here's revision #08. Thanks for the feedback so far, please keep it coming! It's very encouraging. The colors down near the bottom are the new ones I've added/modified in this version.

30 mins. Shadow was a tad awkward because I'm on a glass desk. I should have done the reflection, lol...

That's a very white apple . . . maybe you could pull the tonal value down a little bit?

yea, like what was mentioned before, branch off the shades and tints of just green, just to mess around, because latimer, it has good detail, but you're not really modeling with a lot of white, and it doesn't look just right.

add some browns, tans, complements and maybe a dash of yellow or two to give an atmospheric touch to that apple.

I don't want to bother you too much, but could I ask for crits about my older apple / garlic? (december 29)

Thanks for the critique guys, appreciated. 8D

I did this when I got up, another 30 mins. This time I didn't use a subject, just my imagination, & 2 light sources (If you consider reflected light a light source I guess) Shadows are one of my banes, something i definately need to practice, but sadly don't get a chance to very often due to my imprisonment of manga. Hopefully one day I'll break free.

Well, this is my first time here, so i will start to say "Hi people!". I didn't manage to get two apples in real life so i made up the coloring from my mind. And yes, i'm aware of the black outlines *sigh <.< but i started this night with photoshop so let me practice more to do something about my "skills" :p

    Here we go.

arch demon, the reason you can't show your images is because they are in PSD format. Try saving them as JPG or PNG.

Last go at apples. Now I'm satisfied. Spent a lot longer on this one. 1.5 - 2 hrs, can't be certain.

alright, i was a lazy fucking bum today and didn't do one even though i wanted to, but i like this thread so here i am lurking around again.

jonish: welcome to CA, time for crit. the apple is good, nice job with the colors and highlight. next time make the shadow darker and use the values more to show how round the apple is. pay even more attention to this than getting the color right. and give yourself better lighting, like one direct light on it without interfering windows or anything. same goes for the garlic. and don't be scared to take too long, patience is extremely important with art, and if you're enjoying spending eons just observing a little fruit as best you can, do it. it paid off, i can tell a lot of hard observation went into your pieces.

latimer: huge improvement over your first piece with these, looking very nice, but still, too much white. the highlight is small enough now, but try not to use white... at all. then, when you're almost done, you can plop in a little white highlight
