Guys - the last time a spammer wandered in here with a "Hey look at this cool pic thread!" it linked to a site that was riddled with malware. Remember that bike through the tree a few weeks back? It probably gave you some unwanted spyware.

I am removing the link to be safe. No one spams images in a forum without a catch.

Even though the link's gone, and you're all ooooing and awwwwing the stupid useless cakes, let me put something in perspective for you...

I was a baker's assistant and a baker way back when. There are actually recipes, many kept secret for proprietary reasons, for creating wedding, birthday, and other overdecorated cakes as displays of the baker/decorator's skills. All the cakes you see in the nice sunny windows at a neighborhood bakery are fake. If they aren't, the baker can't sell them, and he's still an idiot if he knows that but uses real cakes for display anyway. The heat from the sun will melt the cake decorations into an unattractive mess in about an hour, and the mess will attract vermin. Neither is good for business.

Fake cakes can last years, and bakers will often spend days or weeks just on the decorations during their slow periods. The "icing" hardens to the consistency of concrete, and like concrete, is fatal if swallowed, because it will continue hardening in your stomach. The cake itself is usually old-fashioned styrofoam that surface-reacts just like a real cake when you ice it.

There are also recipes for fake cookies, brownies, donuts, and a thousand other prepared foods, not all of them necessarily imitating baked goods. Some restaurants with old-fashioned chiefs or owners still often have a display of their daily fare in a glass case to attract customers, and all of it's fake as hell, because most real food starts to look like either cardboard or sewage in a matter of minutes once it's cooked.

This became an acceptable artform when movies and TV came along, and specialists had to prepare fancy dinners that wouldn't wilt to shit under the many takes and incredibly hot lights needed for good taping and video repro. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that the nice shots on all your home cookbooks are fake for the same reason--ultra-hot lighting and long shooting times.

It's actually a rather nice high-paying field if you can get into it, and like painting realistic olives and scrambled eggs...

Hope that leaves you with a bit more appreciation for fake food...

Ilaekae: A friend of mine told me that ALL photographed food in advertisment was actually raw and painted on by a specialised artist. Even that juicy lookin' turkey who looks like it's just been brought out of the oven by Martha. I find all this 'art of the fake' extremely interesting.

Thank you for that, E'... I hadn't heard of that one before, though I knew they often used raw vegetables with glycerine or something else to make them look cooked.
