Some lines and a few shapes - WereMagnus' Sketchbook

I've been lurking here for far too long and I feel it is time I finally do this. Since making it into my second year of VisCom in college has given me the bit of courage I needed to do it.

Crit away. Excuse the lined paper for when it comes as a good portion of my roughs are done during lectures,

I'm amazed at how few people have noticed this, as you're one of the best artists I've seen in a while. I have only one beef about the creature sketches, the first in particular; the lines are pretty messy, and could use some cleaning up. Other than that, you're putting a lot of imagination into them, good job.

You should work on the human body a little more though; from what I can tell, you don't have a very good understanding of the face. In the last sketch, the female at the top of the paging facing straight at you has a very lopsided face, the left side being bigger and wider than the right. Also, the skull on the right side, second from the bottom looks very weird, but the one below it is almost exactly like a human skull to the best of my knowledge.

    Awesome work, keep it up!

    Thanks Lionsword,

You are correct, the human face is my greatest weakness currently, but I have been slowly working at it for a few years now. Being in anatomy class is really helping me out. It's really alignment and relative measurement I need to practice more with.

I whip off monsters quickly and forget sometimes that it takes a bit longer for me to draw a human face

    Z is for zombie

The faces are skewed cause I was drawing at a bad angle as I was leaning on my desk.

Doodles from the sides of my project process pages.

    Bone Pagoda

These are both from a finished project, but I'm not feeling like they're worthy of the finished forum, lol.
    So they can go here.

Project was a second year design course for Visualization Process, we had to build a fantastic building with construction drawing and then render it in ink/colour.

I'm by no means a master of markers, I still have a lot to learn, but this was a fun way to experiment and try some stuff I've never done before.

Blizzard, Japanese and some Badlands influence in here.

    Great thread so far.
Very solid pencil work. Your anatomy is pretty good, but what I really like are your creature designs.

The last piece in markers is very nice too.

Great renderings, all have good depth, proportion, and dynamics. I'd love to see some color pieces, as you obviously have the drawing phase down.

thanks for the feedback. In regards to the comment about seeing more colour: I hope so too! Right now my classes are only just allowing us to start applying colour to our projects. I'd post some personal work that's coloured but the time to do that's few and far between.

But once I've got some, I'll post some.

    works in progress and scribbles

Some snake/dragon people characters from my notes.

Pengu - which I tried combining a penguin as the base bird for a tengu (which is a crow-like japanese ghoulie)

Skeleton roughs for an ink piece, it's been tweaked since then

discussion roughs for card/costume design project. Which also has been worked on since then. Will eventually be 7.5"x4" cards in gouache

Very cool sketches. I can see you have very traditional drawing skill in anatomy as it most evidently shows. Your character concepts are very good with some interesting outfits for your more human characters. Keep on trucking. I am going to add your sketch book to my signature but if you don't want me too just let me know and I will take it off.

Imagination is not a total internal power but rather it is a reflection and multi-faceted projection of our experiences and knowledge. We take in information from the world around us and intuitively re-order it into something new. Something is not created from nothing but simply transformed from what was before.

    Vikings + Batzombie

Finished viking cards, which the foreground/background are competing.

And someone mentioned they wanted to see more colours, so here's something I scribble painted in openCanvas in between working on assignments.
