    Lot

This is a Camp, in the Sierra Nevada of Santa Marta in Colombia, the soldiers are equipped whit high tecnology, the cold is very strong, is at night, and the help is about to arrive.

    Hallo

    Background:
The encampment featured in this picture is a terran outpost near the enemy border on the outer belt planet Wolf 9929, where perennial night reigns. Accordingly, the climate on this distant world is harsh - temperature never rises above -50 C degrees.
The main purpose of this forward base is performing long-range scans of the enemy front as well as sending off scouts, spy troops and sabotage commandos.

    Oomgawa

The advance encampment holds 50 men maximum,
assigned to keep an eye on, and taunt the city.
The knowledge of the advancing army is known to all
the frightened inhabitants, but the progress up the
glacier is slow, with siege engines often falling
    through crevasses.

    Ikiru

    Glogg

The concept then, some sort of creature or device entered the base from within the mountain and laid waste to the entire facility. Only a fraction of the stationed crew survived and pointed the searchlight intended for enemy airplanes on the hole in the ground, hoping to scare off whatever lurks under the frozen ground.

    daveneale

in the not so distant future the snow at the north pole has receded far enough for oil to be easily accessible for exploitation-the ensuing claims and counter claims to who owns what has lead to full scale war. A small unit of Norwegian Special Forces sets camp on vantage point where they can survey the underlying plateau; they're forward base camp of [the coming] winter campaign.

    Gaius

    Kanzansky's Journal 24th October 3010

"Six years it took the machines to stablize this hunk of rocks Volcanic activity!
Now dont get me wrong here, I was no fan of the constant earth quakes and lavas flows, but what the big brains up in the enviro station did'nt count on was the cold, and man do I mean COLD!. This planets central heating system has been turned off.
So here we are, constant Winter for heck knows how many years. I wouldnt mind too much, its just that the loneliness eats away at man's soul and his sanity. END"

    Kanzansky's Journal 15 November 3010

" Everythings changed here, we now know why the bigwigs were so interested in this planet , Lithium ore. This rock is riddled with it!
Our little Camp has become the number one Military encampment in this area of the system.
The Empire must be worried that somebody might want take this rock from us and use the lithium for themselves, but what does a nobody geologist like me know about these things...." END

    timothee

Every winter, the Raalon military setup a winter camp to fend off would be smugglers and enemies, that use the isolated mountains of Aangar to sneak into Raalon's territory. The military post themselves high up in the mountains overlooking the Aangar River, thereby giving them a stealthy position to monitor the province, and defend it if neccesary. The camp usually consists of 30 or so soldiers, manning the 3 gun turrets positioned on the cliff edges. A few soldiers are specialists at reconiscence(?), searching for fresh tracks in the snow. Supplies are helicoptered in, saving much needed time to setup the base. The winter camps have been quite successful at killing and capturing enemies, with only a handfull escaping into the mountains.

After the wars, the skys were stained the color of cotton candy for what seemed to be the rest of eternity. An ironic end to such a terrible story...

    matsign

"The sky finally cleared up. There was no air support, but at least we will see them coming this time. Ammunition is almost gone. The Russians didn't come this morning but we know they'll be back tonight. Our detachment has been holding this outpost for weeks. Defending the supply chain while the PanzerGruppe falls back for fuel. The Capitan says the reinforcements got lost and stumbled across enemy lines. No word back from them yet. It seems as though it snows all year here. Not until recently has snow stopped coming down from those neutral, chilly clouds. The day passes slow, like those old days back at the villa, so long ago. I do miss it. Anything would beat this waiting! The Russians play with us. Mortar barrage here, burst of machine-gun fire into our line. They're waiting until we've got nothing left.

All I know is we're stuck here in our muddy trenches, staring impatiently into that deadly treeline."

    simonstalenhag

The Republic of Norrland is joining the war against the Soviet Empire.
This is a Norrland base camp, somewhere northeast of Övertorneå.

The tents are made of some advanced thermodynamic material that
regulates the temperature of the air around it. They can be used in
    both cold and warm environments.

The idea was to have some hi-tech fantastic base camp/soldiers
portrayed in a realistic and spontaneous way like if the image
was a snapshot taken by somebody involved in the scene.

    Peg

The forward basecamp served as a portable station sampling the environmental conditions and estimating military responses to threats in the area.

    Zutaiola

This is a base camp being built for diferent purpouses. Provides the troops with appropiate shelter for the winter, supports them crossing the river and in the latter siege of the position and provides a good defensive outpost if retreat is needed.
During the construcction considerable number of troops would be keeping the river line avoiding danger of being surprised by enemy.

    Chaosrocks

It was a long winter, the clean snow gave lie to the bitterness and the mud beneath.

    Form

    The Mark Of Imaga

By the end of the second nuclear winter, the air was so cold that snow could not fall. Like the eye of a tornado, the world was silent and immobile.

With all but a few remote regions blanketed by electromagnetic radiation in the first nuclear winter, the social and political geography of the world splintered and was set adrift. Fossil fuels were consumed excessively in old, conventional, innefficient devices to keep the major population centers warm. Within ten years, fuels were depleted and the world so damaged that it was unanymously agreed upon that there was not even a faint glimmer of hope remaining. The second nuclear winter was a result of the global implosion of spirituality - the last vestiges of humanity that clung on for survival had run out of consolation in their prayers and meditation, and those who refused to take their own lives began projecting their frustrations onto the remnants of their world. Cities were rocked as warheads and power plants were set alight by the fires of martyrdom.

The Mark of Imaga was the final bomb to go off in the second nuclear winter. Launched from a base deep in Alaska, the bomb sailed up into the stratosphere, catching the light from the cold sun like a dove. Eventually its engines burned out, and it hung like a forlorn tear amongst the clouds, finally turning in a slow cartwheel and tumbling down. It landed in what used to be california, setting off a chain reaction of explosions that rocked the san andreas fault line. The resulting cacophony of global disasters put an end to what was left of life on earth. It was all over in a matter of days. Like the eye of the tornado, the world was once again silent. Silent as it was at the beginning of time.

    Silent now, at the end.

I voted for form, the concept is very well written ( for me humble french ) very good story, good sense of depth in the image, the foreground is just awesome with this skull/gazmask structure. The helicopter could have been more consistent, more solid but yea oyo!

    good job bro !!

art zealot the rules are not "implicit".. that would mean they were never stated.... I must reitterate it three or four times a round and on every poll.
but I put your image in the poll as it should be.
Ikuru... once I starte d posting one or two that were obvious ly finish but unstated... for equity I had to post them all... Im sure the voters will sort it out

voted for halo, though oomgawa was a very close second. i think they both created what was asked, but halo's captured the feeling of lonelyness, as most real life forward basecamps would probably have, actualy it reminded me of the base camp from the thing

I got the same feeling too, grenogs. It came across more of a scientific research base than military. I can see some vehicles under the tent. That's something about a winter setting.

i agree about the scientific research base, and if the army style tents and the tanks weren't in it then i wouldn't have picked it. I think it was a tough choice as most although technicly good, didnt realy come across as being forward basecamps, but more as established maincamps. i guess it all comes down to personal interpretation. BTW Matsign, i also like yours, and when i first read the title for this one, i automaticly imagined a ww1 trench scene, but on a much grander scale at a birds eye view.

Voted for Form, awesome job, as well as Oomwaga, it was hard to decide, Artzealot was great as well but it was kind of pushing the theme, specially with the description, I really liked Glogg's also.

Correct proportion and beautiful composition is used in Oomgawa's painting, nice job. Something about the scale looks a tad off. You got my vote.

I voted Oomgawa, the whole piece seemed to fit very well together very cohesive. great detail, and i can see definate improvement!!

Close behind, i would have to say was Form, also nicely detailed.

Others worth a good mention Gaius, daveneale, glogg, hallo, Zutaioke, artzealot, timothee... not necissarily in that order. The rest seem really cut and past or very unfinished. there were also a couple that didn't have much detail or depth.... good job to those who invested the time and effort it will continue to pay off for you down the road!!

    Good Luck to you all!!

I voted for Oomgawa, for a wonderful fantastical environment that transports me to farflung places like Siberia or Northern China...wonderful. IMO, it best represents the idea of a forward base.

waiting to exhale. this is the first time I have even gotten one vote!
Personally I like Matsign's because it looks like
an extremely advanced front/camp, which is what I imagine
it would actually look like. Nothing permanent, just raw survival.
Extreme thanks to everyone who voted for me so far!
I will come back and thank each one of you personally ASAP!
