however, could you elaborate on "city, inverted"..?...in inverted as in upsidedown/inside out.
because my original idea that came to mid would be to show the bototm of the island but it just be the dirt and roots you would expect but to have it at a perspective where the skyscrapers above are visible through the water would that be allowed? or does there have to be a city or somethine going on on the underneath?

i realise you answer is bascily spoon feeding me the concept but i dont wanna break the rule

    Here's my initial rough:
EOW#65 A city on the under side of a floating island 2DAY EXTENSION!

    FINAL:
EOW#65 A city on the under side of a floating island 2DAY EXTENSION!

"We watched our comrade's ship as she was swept off course by the storm, the waves dragging her towards a small island that wasn't on our map. We saw the great ship come to ground on the rocky shore, but fighting the storm ourselves, we couldn't yet follow and offer assistance to the stranded crew. The storm let up by morning and we set course for the island - where we found nothing of our comrade's ship. Not a single piece of wood nor sail washed up on the shore, not a man of her crew. There were odd footprints in the sand, but they seemed to lead back to the sea, rather than up coast inland. It was as if the ship and her crew had simply disappeared into the waters..."

So, I'm in with this WiP picture this round. Gonna finish it to the end. Want to add some more details. I like the pictures above me, especially the pirate themed one of Kiriko, get it done!

EOW #65 submission - The Cities of Gottawanna I & II

    - FINAL -
(sorry 'bout the "no wip" thingy)

EOW#65 A city on the under side of a floating island 2DAY EXTENSION!

By the year 3446, the planet Neptune had been terraformed.

    Sort of.

Once millions of years worth of ice had melted, huge islands were released from the ice's clutches. The ground was self levitating, as the minerals in the ground contained polar opposite properties to the iron core of the planet.

At first, the islands would rise away from the planet, threatening to keep forever their prehistoric secrets in the depths of space. Large iron structures were built below the islands to offset the effects of the ground's properties. Later, cities were erected on each island. They were mounted below the islands to allow shorter digging times and to leave, undisturbed, the beauty of the alien plant and animal life on the top side.

    Fun, fun, fun...

You folks are doing some really cool idea interpretations!

Acapulco, I love the oil painterly feel, and I hope to learn how to mimic that by setting my photoshop brushes properly. The view looks just as if I was staring upward from the bottom of a trench. Rockin'!

Truzart, very cool look that feels like pastels. Barely into the job, and it looks like you spent weeks on it! Bravo! You and I went in similar directions eh? Awesome!

Kiriko, awesome water color stuff (photoshop, or really watercolor painting?), and an intense interpretation! Reminiscent of Shin-Gansai! I love it!

Chaosrocks, your submission for the last one had so much texture! Artrage 2 (a very cool program, BTW)? Or did you bring out oils and a pallet knife? Seriously cool stuff!

Anyhoot, I'll swing by once the voting starts, and I look forward to seeing even more interpretations, and as always get inspired and humbled by the abilities of the people on this board. <---(really, really)

    Y'all take care!

    Traditional tool memories

I'm right with you on that one Chaosrocks. More often than not, I was using quart cup guns (and dragging 100 feet of air hose behind me), airbrushes, and paint rollers on muslin canvases 25feet x 60feet. I remember breathing in more paint than I've put on most 20in. x 35in. canvases, "back in the day". In two years of drop painting (not consecutive, as there are not that many shows being built that use them), I've spread about 25 gallons of paint (per drop) on 20 or so drops.

Now I'm messing around with two Wacom tablets with two machines that cost as much as I got paid for a week's worth of the aforementioned, to accomplish basically the same and in less time. Strange that I still get a backache from it... Oy vay!!!

    Looking good so far!

Kiriko VERY cool angle...I love the old abouve/below water thing!...looking forward to the development

    TRUZART nice start

acapulco very nice lighting so far.rocking

McFilms this has an epic scifi film scale. I'm not too sure bout the colours you've chosen for the top of the isalnds though...just seems a lil muddy.

FINAL [mabe..may tweek here and there]

EOW#65 A city on the under side of a floating island 2DAY EXTENSION!

The lower level of the city; a place where the working classes reside. The huts are the entrances to the homes, which are partially hollowed out of the rock. Because they're parents lack the means to buy transportation the kids get to school on the land below by skydiving...and hitch lifts back home from the various delivery ships bringing supplies to the island.

daveneale: thanks very much for the comments! I really like the amount of story your concept tells. Your work has a great "toon" feel to it as well. The parachuting could be a great metaphor for the dangers kids go out to meet everyday. Great job!

    entry

My entry, i missed the section where the city had to be upside down, so its just underneath..
I imagined a rundown outer rim of the galaxy type planet, whith an atmosphere that is uninhabitable on the surface but livable above the cloud cover..
I imained it to be a once industry rich colony that has gone to seed and ruin now that the industry has died...
all the entries are pretty inspiring so far, that first undersea one..money!
    anyways
    here goes

I guess people on floating islands fish for birds? I kept thinking that and it made me really want to draw someone fishing for seagulls, but I couldn't since I had to focus on enviroment.

I really love that island one! It's so cute, and I definitely wouldn't have thought of floating on water... o__o

that looks really nice doobu. If you have a larger version of it you should post that, this one is a little bit small, but looks very cool.

"I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
