    wtf, your work looks seriously clean and worked through. Those perspective studies from Loomis look like straight out from the book. Those figures and that still life are also looking very good! yeah, keep posting.

    Wow. You are really improving. Your works look so clean. Your life drawing & figure studies look really nice. Your perspectives studies & geometrical studies look interesting as well. It's nice looking at your sketches. I think I'm actually learning something from it.. You're making me want to improve more.

    FourTonMantis: Thanks. I'll post some newer stuff as soon as I get a camera.

    This one came out really light when I photographed it, so I had to tweak it in Photoshop, but it looks kinda bad now.
    I actually went quite subtle on this one.. It took about 5 hours.

    FourTonMantis: Thanks. Agreed about the arm. The model kept changing it so I left it at a block in stage.

    Here's something more recent. A 2.5 hour drapery study. Drawing folds is so hard. Every time the model gets up and sits down it's completely different.. I gave up halfway through the skirt. My instructor said not to chase the folds. At one point I just started making stuff up.

    Awesome figure drawings! My only crit: Take a few photographs to share also the steps. I think there are many ways to do the Bargue-like drawings between the measuring steps and the final shading. Could be very helpful to see your steps! Thanks for sharing! Keep on posting!

    zombifried: Thank you. Wow, I didn't even notice there was exactly one year between my posts. My last post was on April 19th, 2009 and I started posting again on April 19th, 2010! That's totally unintentional. Crazy. But during that year I didn't take time off. I was drawing all the time. I think I improved some, but far from enough.

    : Thanks. But I won't be doing more Bargue drawings anytime soon. I'll try to keep posting, but all the photos I took of my drawings look so bad.. I'll have to redo them sometime.


    Seeing as Bargue drawing was brought up, here's an actual cast drawing I did like 9 months ago. I probably should have posted this before the other stuff.
    It looks so bad. I didn't really know what I was doing, in terms of rendering. We had to use Sight-Size, which is a method that feels so backwards and unnatural to me. Plus we had to draw in a very dark room, with light coming from one skylight. My eyes are pretty bad, so that didn't help. I also found the type of charcoal we had to draw with extremely hard to handle. It has some smudges on it now, and some charcoal fell off from carrying it around.
    No way this type of finish would have been good enough in a place like The Florence Academy of Art. Then again, I didn't spend as long on it as those guys do. I think this was 5 sessions of 3 hours. Maybe a bit more. So around 15 hours.

    Sooo glad that I missed out on cast drawing using sight-sizing. I think there's definitely more value in doing Bargue paintings to get a better understanding of alla prima fundamentals.

    burning_chrome: Alla prima Bargue paintings? I've never heard of that. Sounds kind of strange to copy a charcoal drawing in paint. Maybe you meant cast?

    knut-: thank you. Now if only I could use that knowledge to make actual pictures hahah... Actually, I've forgotten a lot of the more complex stuff, even though I did more perspective studies after those.


    Feeling a bit burnt out on drawing lately. I also feel like I haven't been improving as much anymore. One step forward, two steps back. That kind of thing.

    Anyway, here's some more stuff. Horrible photos. Around 20 min long poses I think. Ignoring hands and feet as usual. I really need to work on that.

    Sounded strange to me as well when one of the guys teaching my color anatomy class mentioned that he does them as regular practice: link

    I'd much rather spend my time doing paintings of bargues instead of drawings after seeing his works.

    I love your figure drawings =)) and the dedication to anatomy! lol the sculpture of the ear is lovely. Is everything you do in pencil? I would like to see other mediums too!! I like how you just made up the folds, sometimes its better just to jot down what you see and feel and refine it to make it perfect later based on other parts of the folds (if shes moving of course) that way you can really learn how the folds work and make them work for you in your piece

    Pamz1e: Thank you. Not everything is just pencil. I use graphite, charcoal pencils, conte, pastels and wax based pencils. Nothing very colorful though.


    Here is my finished Écorché I did with Rey Bustos. (surprised it wasn't called the Reycorché™) I spent a lot of time on it, but I ran out of time on the last part, the trapezius and the neck muscles, which I'll probably refine more later. I learned a lot from doing this Ecorche, or anatomical figure. I never thought I would get into sculpture, but I really enjoyed working on this.
    Made with Super Sculpey and Chocolate colored Sculpey, with some parts spray painted and stained with wood stainer.

    So my time studying in LA has come to an end... Here's two drawings I did in the last few weeks of school. The figure was like a three session pose that I still wasn't able to finish and the portrait was like 4 hours. My instructor, Ron Lemen, helped me with the rendering on the portrait. The figure is on a 24x36 inch sheet and the portrait on 18x24. Got a bit smudged and creased during travel. Sorry for the unfocused cell phone pictures...

    The last two are amazing! I like how you practiced the proportions on the portrait, the shading on both of them is very realistic and well placed. There are some spots that the skin looks like its breathing, like on the right top part of the arm and breast, and the right leg and stomach of the first one. Theres probably more, its just an awful quality picture. Cell phone camera you say? Lol

    Hey Norkagar, it makes me very happy to see a fellow Dutchie in serious pursuit of the arts.
    There was a time when I seriously wondered whether there was that kind of interest whatsoever in the Netherlands.


    Not much I can say on the technical side, haven't done too much on perspective and your anatomy seems to be going in the right direction, you can definitely see the improve compared to the start of your sketchbook. Love the ecorche, seems a tad short though, not sure if that was the idea.


    One thing I noticed is that your work consists solely of solely straightforward academical work. I think there will come a point of time when you have to start to address what you personally want to do with art. Try to experiment a bit, play around with graphic form, rhythm, line work, facial expressions, drawing from imagination, etc, try to find something that personally resonates with you, put yourself in your artwork.


    P.s : What book are those pages from in post #35?

    MidgardSerpent: Thank you. I appreciate it. I still wonder every day if there's anyone else in this country who shares the same interests and goals. I've never really met any...
    I know so far I've just done studies. The reason for that is because I never feel ready to start doing my own work. I don't feel like I possess the technical skill to express myself. I do think about concepts and ideas though. I keep a sketchbook for personal drawings and write down things when I feel inspired. I just think it's too early to start doing personal work. I need more training.
    I think the Ecorche seems short because I shot it from an angle looking down. And I also made the upper legs too long, because the wire-frame wasn't entirely proportionally correct. I took it as carry-on luggage on the plane from LAX to AMS and it got a bit damaged. I tried to fix it later. Now it's standing on top of a book shelf slowly cracking and collecting dust...
    Those images in post #35 are not from any book. Those are anatomical studies I did of a Raphael drawing and a photograph of a nude model. You draw the muscles underneath in pen and combine it with the image and add the names of the muscles in photoshop. They are like 2D Ecorches. I did more than just those two.
