Woah, that is so great. I love the style already. Hope I don't have to buy a new rig to play it. Here's the video the pictures above where taken from. Interesting when you're into game dev and game techniques.

Couldn't agree more with Jason, such awesome ideas.

@Djohnston: Listed in that video is Jason Mitchell, Moby Francke and Dhabih Engh. (Was wondering what Dhabih has been up to)

    Ah, the classic rocket jump.
That does look fun. The description of all the different kinds of lights and shadows they did on the models might as well have been in Inuit for all it told me, though.

Wow, Valve makes the best shooter games. I love the design of the spy. Great concepts!

I'm pretty sure Moby Francke is the one behind those amazing character designs.
Does anyone know where i can get more of those illustrations?

Meet the Soldier, one of nine playable character classes in Team Fortress 2:

    Name: Soldier
    Role: Offense
Weapons: Rocket Launcher / Shotgun / Shovel
    Favorite World War: 2
    Special Ability: Rocket Jump

Though he wanted desperately to fight in World War 2, the Soldier was rejected from every branch of the U.S. military. Undaunted, he bought his own ticket to Europe. After arriving and finally locating Poland, the Soldier taught himself how to load and fire a variety of weapons before embarking on a Nazi killing spree for which he was awarded several medals that he designed and made himself. His rampage ended immediately upon hearing about the end of the war in 1949.

when i first saw the team fortess stuff i was so unbelievably pleased that someone finally had the nerve to make a next-gen game that WASN'T the horrible photorealistic style that all publishers seem to demand these days.
it might take a while but hopefully the benefits of having a unique style to your product will start trickling down to other, less creatively free developers!

Omg, I'm in tears from laughing so hard.
These character videos are better than most movies that call themself "comedy" nowadays.

    Yes and no.
Yes, as in the name TeamFortress2 never changed.
No, as in the original one that was scheduled for 98/99 looked more serious like Battlefield2 does today.

Jabo: Duke Nukem. (where the hell were you in 98?)

Chupacabra : That would be sweet but I find that everything that has been shown is good, basic design rules. And I'm delighted that it actually makes it into the core idea of a game. Finally! A team that listens to it's specialists.

I think he was just poking fun at the Duke getting delayed again and again.

Heres another video where they talk about their "Illustrative Rendering technique" http://www.gametrailers.com/player/23520.html?type=flv Its alittle technical for those not into shaders and rendering jargon, but very interesting if that's your cup'o tea. Theres also some talk of their design approach. One of the more interesting things they say at the begining is that they drew alot of inspiration from early 20th century commercial illustration....which I think is a fantastic idea for style resource. Based on some of the concepts I've seen it looks like they took alot of cues from Layendecker and "tooned" em up a bit. I would love to see a fantasy action, Conan, or Pellucidar type game given a Howard Pyle/NC Wyeth or Maxfield Parrish treatment.

This game is brilliant. The art direction is spot on. This game oozes so much personality. I've been waiting for this game for so long and now that it's out it fulfills everything it promised and set out to do. Whoever changed the direction from realistic combat to the exaggerated cartoon style (more faithful to the original TF) - kudos to you! The only one complaint I have - why no girl/female models... not one (at least the medic or the spy? alternative models?). I feel excluded.

Aside: Does anyone know what genre of music this is (in the game and trailers)?
